Suv Cars Under 15 Lakh in India (61)

SUV cars under 15 lakh make up the widest and most contested part of the Indian new-car market, with 57 models on this list spanning sub-four-metre compact SUVs, entry variants of midsize models and a growing set of electric options. Prices open at Rs 5.70 lakh (ex-showroom) for the Tata Punch. Powertrain choice is unusually broad, with naturally aspirated petrol, turbo-petrol, diesel, factory-fitted CNG and full-electric all coexisting inside the same price band.

Who should buy an SUV under 15 lakh

Buyer type

Where to look

Why

Family Buyer

Scorpio N, Hyundai Venue

Scorpio N is the only 6/7-seater in budget with a 5-star rating; Venue is the most well-rounded compact option

Mileage Buyer

Fronx, Exter, Tata Punch

Certified figures up to 28.5kpl, all three with factory CNG

City Commuter

Kia Sonet, XUV 3XO

Sub-four-metre footprints with automatic options, though the Sonet's rear seat is the most cramped of the five

Safety-First Buyer

Value-for-Money Buyer

Tata Punch, Maruti Suzuki Brezza

This segment suits the equipment-led buyer least. Anyone set on a midsize SUV with a full feature list should know that Rs 15 lakh reaches only its base or second variant, which looks barebones next to a top-spec compact SUV at the same money.

Is Tata Punch coming in diesel by the end of this year or early next year? Need to replace my 2017 i20 diesel asta. Annual run of 20-21k with 50:50 usage. Budget is 10-13 lakh on-road, Gurgaon. Need something that has more ground clearance than i20 as it would be plying in the village or tier 2 cities as well. PS: Don’t want to be in long queues for the CNG and EV charging isn’t possible at my current residence.

No, the Tata Punch is not expected to get a diesel engine this year or early next year. Given your annual running of 20-21,000 km with a 50:50 city-highway split, diesel car still makes the most financial sense, especially since you do not want to deal with CNG queues or electric car charging limitations. The Mahindra XUV 3XO diesel is the best fit for your requirements. It offers significantly more ground clearance than your Hyundai i20, which will be useful on village roads and in tier 2 cities. The diesel engine is efficient and well-suited to your running, and this Mahindra car is one of the most spacious compact SUVs in the segment, making it a comfortable upgrade from the i20. It also fits within your Rs 10-13 lakh on-road budget in Gurgaon.

My car usage is hardly twice or thrice a week. I don't use my car for daily travel. My budget is Rs 10 lakh. I currently have a 2012 Hyundai Eon Sportz and want to upgrade to a better make and model, preferably a crossover or SUV. Which would be the best option among the following: Tata Punch/Nexon, Maruti Fronx, Renault Kiger, and Mahindra 3XO?

With your usage pattern of driving just two or three times a week, the priority should be a petrol car that is easy to live with, reliable and inexpensive to maintain. The Mahindra XUV 3XO is the best choice from your shortlist. It is one of the most spacious compact SUVs in the segment, has a wide cabin that makes it a genuinely comfortable five-seater, and the turbo petrol engine is punchy and enjoyable to drive. This Mahindra car also offers a strong safety package and good value for money. The Tata Nexon is a good alternative, but the XUV 3XO feels more spacious and better finished inside. The Tata Punch is a segment below and does not feel like a meaningful upgrade from your Eon. The Maruti Fronx is a sensible and reliable choice, but it does not feel as premium or as spacious as the 3XO.

I am first time car buyer planning to buy an SUV considering family needs. I will be driving mostly in Bangalore city traffic and plan to drive longer distances every few months, up to 500 kms including ghat roads. I would like to have good service support, automatic option (not decided), front visibility for city traffic. My budget is upto 12L. Can you suggest suitable options?

For your requirements, the Mahindra XUV 3XO is the best fit. It offers a strong balance of city-friendly dimensions, good front visibility and a comfortable ride, which is important for Bangalore traffic. This Mahindra car is also one of the most spacious compact SUVs in the segment, making it a genuinely comfortable family car. It handles highway runs and ghat sections well, with a stable and confident feel. Mahindra’s service network is strong, and the car is well-priced within your budget. The automatic option is a proper torque converter, which is smooth and reliable in city conditions. The Maruti Suzuki Brezza 1.5-litre is a good alternative, offering lower running costs and better efficiency. Its new turbo petrol will offer better highway performance, but it only comes with a manual. It is not as spacious as the 3XO, but it is comfortable, easy to drive and backed by Maruti’s extensive service network.Overall, the 3XO is the more complete package for your needs. It combines space, comfort, city usability and highway capability better than most rivals in this price range.

I intend to replace my TATA Tiago NRG and am looking for a small SUV EV. My driving is around 5000 km per year with mostly highway driving for leisure trips of maximum 400 km per day. I am thinking of buying the Punch Empowered 40kw under a budget of 13 lakh but I am worried about "range anxiety".

Verified

With 5,000 km a year and mostly highway leisure trips of up to 400 km a day, the Tata Punch EV Empowered 40 kWh is actually a very sensible choice. The 40 kWh battery offers a real-world range of around 300-350 km depending on driving style and conditions, which is enough for most of your trips with a top-up en route. The Punch EV is also one of the most affordable electric SUVs, and it offers a comfortable ride, good ground clearance and a compact footprint that makes it easy to live with.Range anxiety is understandable, but it is largely a planning issue. On a 400 km trip, you will need a quick charging stop, and with the growing DC fast-charging network, this is easily manageable. The key is to plan your stops around available chargers and not run the battery too low. Overall, the Punch EV Empowered 40 kWh is the right choice for your usage and budget. Plan your charging stops and you will find range anxiety is far less of an issue than it seems.

I am planning to buy an SUV, and my annual running is quite low, around 4,000-5,000 km. Most of my driving will be in the city, with occasional highway trips of around 2,000 km annually. My budget is Rs. 10-12 lakh, and the car will be used by my family of four, including me. Please suggest the best SUV options for my requirements, considering comfort, reliability, safety, performance, mileage, maintenance, and overall long-term ownership.

With your low annual running of 4,000-5,000 km and a budget of Rs 10-12 lakh, a petrol compact SUV is the most sensible choice. The Mahindra XUV 3XO is the strongest recommendation here. It offers the most spacious cabin in the segment, making it a genuinely comfortable 5-seater for a family of four, and the turbo petrol engine is punchy enough for occasional highway runs while remaining efficient in the city. This Mahindra car also comes well equipped and offers excellent value for money. The Maruti Suzuki Brezza Turbo is the alternative if you prioritise long-term reliability and low maintenance costs above all else. It is a proven, dependable product with Maruti's extensive service network, and it is also a comfortable 5-seater. The 1.2 petrol versions of the Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet are also worth considering if you want a more premium-feeling cabin and a wider feature list. They might not have the same performance as the turbo-petrol versions, but their engine is responsive and both are very user-friendly with light controls and good visibility.
