India’s passenger vehicle market in FY2026 closed with sales of 47,05,056 units, up 8.4 percent year on year, with petrol continuing to account for the largest share at 47.48 percent. CNG remained the second most popular fuel at 21.98 percent, followed by diesel at 18.08 percent, while hybrids and EVs accounted for 8.21 percent and 4.25 percent respectively.
Against this backdrop, the top-selling models across each fuel type highlight which cars drove volumes in petrol, diesel, CNG, hybrid and electric segments through the year.
Top petrol cars FY2026
1. Maruti Suzuki Swift : 1,54,993 units

The Swift is the highest-selling petrol car in FY2026, supported by Maruti Suzuki’s wide service network, along with its light controls, engaging handling and strong fuel efficiency. However, the engine lacks punch and pricing overlaps with the premium hatchback segment at the top end. The Swift rivals the Tata Tiago and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, and is priced from Rs 5.79 lakh to Rs 8.65 lakh.
2. Maruti Suzuki Baleno : 1,49,332 units
The Baleno continues to see strong demand due to its ride quality and spacious cabin, making it a key player in the premium hatchback segment. It is offered with a single naturally aspirated engine, and the AMT gearbox is not as smooth as a CVT. The Baleno rivals the Hyundai i20, Tata Altroz and Toyota Glanza, and is priced from Rs 5.99 lakh to Rs 9.10 lakh.
3. Maruti Suzuki Fronx : 1,17,558 units

The Fronx’s crossover styling, ease of driving and strong fuel efficiency have helped it rank third in the petrol segment. It offers good space and comfort, though some features are missing and the Boosterjet engine does not feel as strong as expected. The Fronx is priced from Rs 6.85 lakh to Rs 11.84 lakh and rivals the Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger.
Top CNG cars FY2026
1. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga : 1,45,480 units

The Ertiga leads the CNG segment with its strong value proposition and practical, flexible cabin, making it a popular choice among both private and fleet buyers. However, it misses out on some modern features. The Ertiga rivals the Toyota Rumion and Kia Carens, and is priced between Rs 10.76 lakh and Rs 11.83 lakh for CNG variants.
2. Maruti Suzuki Dzire : 1,35,330 units
The Dzire continues to see strong demand, particularly in fleet use, thanks to its good low-end response and balanced ride and handling. However, it misses out on some features and has tight rear headroom. It was also the best selling car in FY 2026. The Dzire rivals the Hyundai Aura, Honda Amaze and Tata Tigor, and is priced between Rs 8.50 lakh and Rs 9.04 lakh for CNG variants.
3. Maruti Suzuki Wagon R : 96,381 units
The Wagon R remains a strong seller due to its roomy cabin and ease of driving. However, its light build and limited highway ability remain drawbacks. It rivals the Maruti Suzuki Celerio, Citroën C3 and Tata Tiago, and is priced between Rs 5.89 lakh and Rs 6.42 lakh for CNG variants.
Top diesel cars FY2026
1. Mahindra Scorpio / Scorpio N : 1,70,372 units

The Scorpio range leads diesel sales, driven by its toughness, off-road capability and strong powertrain options. The Scorpio N adds a more premium cabin and better overall refinement, although luggage space and third-row usability remain limitations. The Scorpio Classic continues to offer a rugged appeal, but lacks features and has dated dynamics.
The Scorpio N and Classic do not have any direct rival due to their ladder-frame construction, though similarly priced three-row SUVs include the Mahindra XUV700, Tata Safari, Hyundai Alcazar and MG Hector. Prices range from Rs 13.49 lakh to Rs 24.95 lakh.
2. Mahindra Bolero : 1,10,136 units
The Bolero continues to see strong demand in rural and semi-urban markets, supported by its rugged construction and torquey diesel engine. It is primarily used for commercial and high-usage applications, although it feels dated and lacks refinement compared to newer SUVs. The Bolero Neo serves as a more modern alternative within the Bolero line-up, while the Bolero Neo+ offers seating capacity for up to 9 passengers. The Bolero range is priced from Rs 8 lakh to Rs 10.49 lakh.
3. Hyundai Creta : 91,907 units

The Creta is the highest-selling monocoque diesel SUV, offering a roomy cabin and a feature-rich package. While some interior plastics could be improved, overall comfort and usability continue to support demand. It was also the second best-selling SUV in FY2025. Creta rivals the Kia Seltos and Tata Sierra in the midsize diesel SUV segment, and is priced between Rs 10.79 lakh and Rs 20.05 lakh.
Top hybrid cars FY2026
1. Toyota Innova HyCross : 62,586 units
The Innova HyCross leads the hybrid segment, offering a spacious cabin, strong air conditioning and easy drivability. It also comes with a Level 2 ADAS suite. However, pricing is on the higher side and interior quality is not its strongest point. The HyCross rivals the Maruti Suzuki Invicto, and is priced between Rs 26.30 lakh and Rs 31.30 lakh for hybrid variants. Claimed fuel efficiency stands at 23.24kpl for the HyCross.
2. Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder : 35,745 units

The Hyryder offers a balanced ride and handling setup along with an efficient hybrid powertrain. However, boot space is limited and overall cabin space is not class-leading. The Hyryder rivals the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Victoris and is priced between Rs 16.72 lakh and Rs 19.99 lakh for hybrid variants. Claimed fuel efficiency is 27.97kpl.
3. Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara : 11,739 units
The Grand Vitara shares its platform and hybrid powertrain with the Hyryder. It offers strong fuel efficiency, a sorted ride and handling balance, and the option of an all-wheel-drive system. However, performance lacks punch and boot space is limited. The Grand Vitara rivals the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Maruti Victoris. It is priced between Rs 16.63 lakh and Rs 19.57 lakh for hybrid variants. Claimed fuel efficiency for the Grand Vitara is 27.97kpl.
Top EVs FY2026
1. MG Windsor : 46,720 units

The MG Windsor leads EV sales, offering a comfortable cabin with lounge-style seating and a relaxed driving experience. However, road noise at higher speeds and ride quality over broken surfaces are areas of concern.
It rivals the Tata Nexon EV, Tata Curvv EV and Mahindra XUV 3XO EV, and is priced between Rs 14.10 lakh and Rs 18.60 lakh. Claimed range stands at 332km (38kWh) and 449km (52.9kWh).
2. Tata Nexon EV : 29,197 units
The Nexon EV continues to see strong demand with good drivability, range and a feature-rich cabin. However, DC fast charging is relatively slow, and fit and finish in some areas could be improved. It rivals the MG Windsor, MG ZS EV, Tata Curvv EV and Mahindra XUV 3XO EV, and is priced between Rs 12.49 lakh and Rs 17.49 lakh. Claimed range is up to 489km (MIDC), with real-world figures closer to 375km for the 45kWh version.
3. Mahindra XEV 9e : 27,336 units

The XEV 9e stands out for its strong performance and technology features. However, ergonomic issues, limited rear visibility due to its coupe-style design, and a complex infotainment interface are notable drawbacks. It rivals the BYD Atto 3, Tata Harrier EV and VinFast VF7, and is priced between Rs 21.90 lakh and Rs 30.50 lakh. Claimed range is 542km for the 59kWh battery and up to 656km for the larger 79kWh battery (ARAI).
