MPV cars in India (23)

MPVs (Multi-Purpose Vehicles) are designed to offer spacious and practical cabins, with seating capacity typically ranging from 4 to 9 passengers. This makes them well-suited for family trips, with enough room for passengers and luggage. Unlike sedans and SUVs, MPVs have a tall, boxy design and wider cabin, offering more interior space and passenger capacity.

Moreover, the MPV segment offers multiple options from both mass- market and luxury brands catering to different needs and budgets. It includes compact MPVs such as the Maruti Suzuki Eeco and MG Windsor, which focus on practicality, easy usability, and efficient running. At the premium end, models such as the Toyota Vellfire and Kia Carnival offer spacious cabins, greater comfort, and premium features, making them well suited to chauffeur-driven travel.

MPVs in India are available with petrol, diesel, CNG, strong-hybrid and electric powertrains. CNG options include the Maruti Suzuki Eeco, Ertiga and Toyota Rumion, while diesel engines are available in models such as the Toyota Innova Crysta and Kia Carnival. The Toyota Innova HyCross and Vellfire are available with strong-hybrid powertrains, while electric MPVs include models such as the MG M9, BYD eMax 7 and Kia Carens Clavis EV.

Trending Questions on MPV Cars - Answered by Autocar Experts

I am thinking of buying a new seven-seater car, and my running will be around 2,500-2,700 km per month, mostly on highways. I am considering CNG options such as the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga VXi CNG and Kia Carens Clavis HTE CNG. EVs are currently out of my radar due to depreciation concerns and the infrastructure changes required. However, I want to keep my running costs reasonably low, which is why I am considering CNG. I would also like to upgrade the car later with aftermarket accessories, as long as they do not affect the manufacturer's warranty. Kindly suggest which of the Ertiga VXi CNG and Carens Clavis HTE CNG would be the better choice considering running costs, initial investment and resale value. Thank you.

I am planning to buy a 7-seater car. My daily running is approximately 15-20 km, with occasional trips of 60-70 km once a week. I have shortlisted two cars based on my preferences: the Innova Hycross and XUV 7XO. I am confused between the two. Which one would be the best for my requirements, and which fuel option should I choose?

1w

I just saw kia opened pre-bookings for the carnival hybrid and this is the first time the limousine+ trim's getting anything other than diesel. apparently it's the same hybrid setup as the sorento, just a stronger motor. No price out yet though, which is annoying because that's kind of the only thing that will decide if it makes sense over the diesel.

2w

My requirement is for a reasonably large 7-seater vehicle because I frequently go on very long drives. Sometimes, I even drive 1,200 km in a single stretch. I have been driving a Toyota Etios Liva for almost 15 years, and the car has given me virtually zero problems. So, I have firsthand experience of Toyota reliability. My budget is around Rs. 24 lakh, and reliability is my number-one priority. I love diesel cars, although I understand that diesel options are fewer. At the moment, I am mainly considering the non-hybrid Toyota Innova HyCross ZX(O) petrol. Within my budget, I mayconsider Innova Crysta, depending on the variant and on-road price. I am also considering Honda City Hybrid, but my concern is the reduced boot space in the hybrid version, and of course, it isn’t a 7-seater. I’m not really looking at too many other brands, although I’m also wondering about the Mahindra XUV 7XO. I haven’t driven it yet, so I’m not sure whether I should seriously consider it. When I compare Mahindra with Toyota, I personally don’t feel that Toyota-level reliability is there and reliability is important to me because I plan to keep the vehicle for many years. I also like some of the newer brands and products such as Citroen but I am concerned whether manufacturers will continue operating in India in the long term. I don’t want to buy a vehicle from a brand that may disappear. So, given my requirements including a 7-seater car for long-distance driving, excellent reliability, comfortable highway cruising, reasonable boot space, and a budget of around Rs. 24 lakh, which car would you recommend? Should I go for the Innova HyCross ZX(O) non-hybrid, Innova Crysta, or take a chance on something like the Mahindra XUV 7XO? I’m particularly interested in your recommendation from a long-term ownership and reliability, comfort perspective, because after owning a Toyota for 15 years, I know what genuine reliability feels like.

Hi Autocar, I currently own a 2021 Creta SX, but my family members are not comfortable in a 5-seater car. We are therefore looking to buy a new 6/7-seater SUV with a budget of up to Rs 30 lakh. It should have a diesel engine, and I am open to both automatic and manual options. Please recommend a good car within my budget.
