Sir, I am planning to purchase a new car with a budget of Rs. 13 lakh. My major running is within the city, accounting for around 90% of my usage, with a daily drive of approximately 20 km. I am confused about whether to go for an automatic or manual transmission. My preferred car brands, in order, are Skoda, Volkswagen, Toyota, Kia, MG, and lastly, Maruti Suzuki. Please suggest which brand and car would be the best choice for me.

With a budget of Rs 13 lakh, 90% city usage and 20 km daily, the decision is straightforward: go for an automatic. Modern automatics are far more reliable and efficient than they used to be, and in stop-start city traffic they make a huge difference to comfort and fatigue. At your running, the slight premium over a manual is justified by the ease of ownership.Given your brand preferences, the Skoda Kylaq 1.0 TSI automatic is the best fit. This Skoda car uses a 6-speed torque converter automatic, which is smooth and well suited to city driving. The Kylaq is also one of the most fun-to-drive cars in the segment, with strong performance and good handling. The only drawback is that the rear seat is not the most spacious in the segment, but it is adequate for most families. If rear seat space is a priority, the Mahindra XUV 3XO automatic is worth considering. This Mahindra car is one of the most spacious compact SUVs, with a wide cabin and comfortable rear seat. The only compromise is that the boot is on the smaller side.Overall, the Kylaq 1.0 TSI automatic is the recommendation.

I currently own a 2016 Mercedes E250 CDI Edition E. The car is soon to complete 10 years, and we are looking for an upgrade. We are interested in buying the GLS. The car will run in a city and on a highway mix. We are not interested in the petrol engine, considering the low mileage. So the 450D becomes the natural option for us. But does it make sense to spend 1.6 crore on a diesel engine car in 2026, considering future conditions and also the possibility of a significant decrease in resale value if govt brings out some stringent policies on diesel cars?

The Mercedes-Benz GLS 450d is a superb upgrade from your E250 CDI, offering a significant step up in space, comfort and luxury. Given your city and highway mix, the diesel engine is actually the right choice – it delivers strong torque, effortless cruising and better efficiency than the petrol, especially in a large SUV like the GLS.The bigger question is the long-term outlook for diesel. The 10-year rule applies only to Delhi-NCR, and there is currently no nationwide policy restricting diesel ownership or resale. The GLS 450d uses Mercedes’ latest diesel technology, which is Euro 6 compliant and among the cleanest diesel engines available. It is unlikely that the government will suddenly ban or heavily penalise such modern, clean diesels. That said, diesel is not completely risk-free. Policy direction can change, and diesel cars generally depreciate faster than petrol or hybrid equivalents. At Rs 1.6 crore, that is a significant consideration. If you are planning to keep the car for 7-10 years, the GLS 450d still makes sense. You will get the full benefit of the car’s capabilities, and depreciation becomes less of a concern over a longer ownership period. If you typically change cars every 3-5 years, the potential for faster depreciation is a bigger factor. The GLS 450d is the right car for your usage, but be realistic about depreciation and ownership period.

I have an Audi Q3 (that I want to replace) and an Innova. My budget is Rs. 1.3 crore (on-road), and I use my car mainly for city driving, with an average speed of 20 kph. I need a car that delivers a minimum mileage of 10 kpl, is easy to manoeuvre, and has features like a powered tailgate and ventilated seats.

Since mileage is key, most petrol-powered luxury SUVs available in this price will deliver single digit figures, especially given your average speeds of 20kph. The Lexus RX is a car that might interest you. Being a hybrid, fuel efficiency is likely to be impressive. Further, this Lexus car isn't too large to feel cumbersome to drive in the city. Also, it is well-equipped with powered tailgate and ventilated seats that you're looking for.If you're looking for something that's a bit more fun-to-drive, and you don't mind opting for a diesel, you could pick between a BMW X5 and a Mercedes-Benz GLC. The BMW car will be a bit nicer to drive but it misses seat ventilation, while the Mercedes' interior is very impressive, and it packs in the features you're looking for. Hence, it is the GLE 300d that would get our vote.

My budget is Rs. 12 lakh (on-road). I am looking for a 5-seater petrol or CNG car with a manual transmission, good ground clearance, and a city mileage of around 16kpl. My annual usage is around 18,000km, of which 15,000km will be in the city and 3,000km on the highway. I want a car that is hassle-free to maintain for the next 10 years and will be used for daily commuting with three people seated in the rear.

We'd recommend waiting a little longer before buying. The Maruti Suzuki Brezza facelift is expected to be launched within the next few days, and given your requirements, it's likely to remain one of the strongest contenders in this segment. With a budget of Rs. 12 lakh on road, annual running of 18,000km, predominantly city driving and a plan to keep the car for 10 years, the Maruti Suzuki car is an excellent fit. It offers good ground clearance, a spacious rear seat for three passengers, low maintenance costs and Maruti Suzuki's extensive service network. The facelift is also expected to bring feature upgrades, and even if you decide on the outgoing model, the launch could lead to attractive discounts. If you're not in a hurry, we'd wait for the facelift before making a booking. It will give you the opportunity to compare the updated model, revised variants and pricing before taking a final call.

I am 62 years old and drive around 1,000km a month. I currently own a 6-year-old Maruti Suzuki Baleno and now want to buy what will likely be my last car. Please suggest the best option. My priorities are fuel efficiency, low maintenance, ease of driving and a budget of around 10 lakh.

Verified

The Maruti Suzuki Brezza is the best fit. It is a simple, dependable car with good ground clearance and a comfortable driving position. It is easy to get in and out of, handles bad roads well and is backed by Maruti’s strong service network and low maintenance costs. The naturally aspirated petrol engine is efficient and reliable. The Brezza is also a sensible upgrade from the Baleno, offering a more commanding driving position without being difficult to drive in the city. You can keep this Maruti Suzuki car for many years with minimal fuss. However, you might have to stretch your budget a little past Rs 10 lakh to get more features and an automatic gearbox. If you want something even more compact and easy to park, plus with more features for the price, the Maruti Suzuki Fronx is also worth considering, but the Brezza feels more substantial and comfortable for long-term ownership. There is a facelifted version coming out very soon, but the changes are expected to be minor, so if you can haggle with your dealer for a good price on the outgoing model, you should try to get a discount.
