India’s electric passenger vehicle (PV) market continued its strong growth momentum in April 2026, with retail sales rising 75 percent year on year (YoY) to 23,506 units, according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations. Compared to March 2026, EV sales were up 4.5 percent.
The segment’s share in total PV retail sales stood at 5.8 percent in April 2026, up from 3.7 percent in the year-ago period. Tata Motors retained its lead in the EV market, while Mahindra outsold JSW MG Motor for the second month in a row. Newer entrants Vinfast and Maruti Suzuki also crossed the 1,200-unit mark during the month.
Tata Motors
8,543 units
Tata Motors remained India’s top EV carmaker in April 2026 with 8,543 units retailed, up 77 percent from a year ago and 3.5 percent from the previous month.
The Nexon EV and Punch EV continued to account for a large share of Tata’s EV volumes, while the Harrier EV and Curvv EV helped the brand expand into higher price segments. The Nexon EV was also the second-bestselling EV in FY2026. Tata continues to benefit from one of the widest EV portfolios and charging ecosystems in the country.
Mahindra
5,413 units
Mahindra retailed 5,413 EVs, an increase of 64 percent YoY and 3.2 percent over March, making April 2026 the second consecutive month in which the homegrown automaker outsold JSW MG Motor in this segment. The brand’s electric SUV line-up, including the BE 6, XEV 9e, XEV 9S and XUV 3XO EV, continues to drive growth. The XEV 9e was also the third-bestselling EV in FY2026.
JSW MG Motor
5,006 units
JSW MG Motor retailed 5,006 EVs in April 2026, up 32.5 percent YoY but down 2.6 percent from March. The brand’s volume driver, the Windsor EV, was also the bestselling EV in FY2026. The Comet EV and ZS EV also contribute to overall sales. MG’s premium EV line-up currently includes the Cyberster roadster and the M9 MPV.
Vinfast
1,232 units
Vinfast crossed the 1,000-unit mark for the first time in India, retailing 1,232 EVs in April 2026. Volumes were up 78 percent over March 2026. The Vietnamese brand currently sells the VF6, VF7 and VF MPV 7 in the country.
Maruti Suzuki
1,231 units
Maruti Suzuki retailed 1,231 e Vitaras in April 2026, up nearly 30 percent over March. This is the first time that Maruti has crossed the 1,000-unit mark in monthly EV retail sales since entering the segment earlier this year.
It is understood that due to production constraints, the company has allocated around 2,000-2,500 units for the domestic market while prioritising exports. The e Vitara was also the fifth most-exported SUV from India in FY2026.
Hyundai
516 units
Hyundai retailed 516 EVs in April, up 8.4 percent month on month but down 31 percent from April 2025. The Creta Electric and Ioniq 5 currently make up Hyundai’s EV portfolio in India. Recently, the Ioniq 5 received a facelift with a larger 84kWh battery and up to 690km range.
BYD
469 units
BYD’s retail sales of 469 EVs were up 18 percent year on year and 13 percent from March. The company’s India line-up includes the Atto 3 and Sealion 7 SUVs, the Seal sedan and the eMax 7 MPV.
Kia
342 units
Kia retailed 342 EVs, reporting a 25 percent decline from March but a significant jump from the low base of 34 units in April 2025. The Carens Clavis EV remains the brand’s primary volume driver in the segment. Kia also sells the EV6 and EV9 in India.
BMW
300 units
BMW remained the highest-selling luxury EV brand in April 2026 with 300 units, despite a month-on-month decline in volumes. But YoY, the numbers more than doubled. The monthly dip likely reflects the concentration of luxury vehicle purchases around the financial year-end in March, which typically results in fewer sales in April for premium brands.
Mercedes-Benz
104 units
Mercedes-Benz retailed 104 EVs in April, up 20 percent YoY. The recently introduced CLA Electric had crossed 400 bookings even before prices were announced. Mercedes-Benz has now revealed prices for the CLA Electric, which range from Rs 55 lakh to Rs 59 lakh.
Tesla
43 units
Tesla sold 43 units last month, with the Model Y continuing as its only offering in India. The American brand recently introduced a new long-wheelbase version of the Model Y at Rs 61.99 lakh (ex-showroom). This variant gets a three-row configuration with a 2+2+2 seat layout and dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup.
Volvo
41 units
Volvo retailed 41 EVs, a marginal decrease from 44 units a year ago but an 86 percent jump from 22 units in the preceding month.
