Hi, I currently own an XL6 and am planning to upgrade to a car with an ex-showroom budget of ₹24 lakh. I am confused between the top-end Tata Sierra petrol and the Tata Safari Accomplished X+ petrol variant. We are a family of 4 adults and 1 child aged 7, and we go on long trips at least once every two months. Please advise.

Since you don't need that extra row of seats, we'd suggest you look at the Tata Sierra. It is the newer car, it feels desirable and premium, it packs the latest technology and features, and its interiors feel like a huge step forward in terms of quality and fit-finish.
The turbo-petrol is impressively refined; it delivers strong performance, and the overall drive experience is smooth and comfortable. And because of its excellent ride-handling balance, it'll be an ideal choice for your occasional long drives too.

I am planning to buy a new car up to ₹17 lakh, with a yearly running of about 12,000 km. I am thinking of the Tata Sierra. Please guide me, as safety and comfort are my priorities.

Yes, the Tata Sierra will meet your requirements of safety and comfort very well. In terms of active safety, the Sierra has good grip around corners and good high-speed stability, too. The safety equipment is also elaborate with 6 airbags, electronic stability program (ESP) and after-impact braking standard across variants.

The Sierra is yet to be tested at either GNCAP or BNCAP; however, Tata Motors says the car is designed for a good rating and given the company's track record, this should be the case. As for comfort, the ride quality is good, and there is ample space inside. The seats, too, are comfy and at the rear, there's enough space for three to be seated in comfort.

I am looking to buy a new petrol turbo car around ₹25 lakh on-road in Bangalore and am confused between the new Kia Seltos and Tata Sierra. I like the design and cabin experience of the Tata Sierra, while the Seltos is strong on aftersales and service. Sierra is generally considered better for safety, although Seltos has also improved safety with its new platform. My top priority is family safety, so I am inclined toward Sierra, but I want to know how significant Tata’s reliability issues are and whether I should instead choose the Seltos.

Your observations are correct. Neither the Tata Sierra nor the Kia Seltos has been crash tested by Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP yet. But Tata Motors cars have had a good track record with these tests. While the Kia Seltos uses an all-new global platform that should be safer than the outgoing model.

Both SUVs feature the latest in active and passive safety features, which should be a reassurance, and thus, on the safety front, you won't be wrong to go with either. As for other factors, the Sierra is certainly the more spacious of the two and edges the Seltos out on comfort as well.

However, in most other areas, it's the Seltos that comes out on top, including, as you have pointed out, after-sales experience. The Sierra is being produced at the ex-Ford plant in Sanand, Gujarat. It is said to have higher manufacturing standards, and the brand has been committed to improving its after-sales service across the country, but the results of that will take some time to show.

I am confused between the Sierra Pure 1.5 NA petrol MT and the Victoris VXI MT/AT. My priorities are safety and reliability, and my annual driving is around 8,000km. I have test-driven the Victoris AT and found it very smooth, but rear-seat headroom and shoulder room felt limited compared to the Sierra. Since the Sierra is a new model, I am unsure about its performance and long-term reliability. Please advise.

Purely as a chauffeur-driven car, the Tata Sierra 1.5 NA petrol MT is an excellent choice for its easy-going, refined nature and a very comfortable cabin. However, its engine performance is lacklustre, and the Maruti Suzuki Victoris will feel much better in comparison. Maruti's petrol engine is nicer, drivability is better, and it is likely to be more fuel efficient, too.
If rear seat space is your priority, you could consider the Hyundai Creta 1.5 Petrol MT or Kia Seltos 1.5 Petrol instead, which are more spacious than the Victoris. Out of these, the Kia is newer and a touch more spacious than the Creta, hence it is the one that gets our vote.

My budget is ₹15 lakh, and I’m looking for a comfortable and stylish 5-seater SUV with a slightly premium feel. I was inclined towards the MG Hector, but its on-road price is more than ₹20 lakh. I can wait if any new launches are on the horizon. Is the new Sierra worth considering?

If you are looking for an SUV with a good luxury feel, we would recommend that you look at the compact SUV segment instead of the mid-size market. While you will get mid-size SUVs for under Rs 15 lakh, they will all be the lower variants, which will not look or feel very luxurious.

The best options here would be the Kia Seltos and the Tata Sierra. However, as we mentioned, if you do look at a segment below, you could get a Hyundai Venue, which has a very premium cabin in both look and feel and will be very well equipped too. This is the SUV we would recommend to give you that luxury feel at your price point.

I currently own an i20 and am planning to upgrade to a midsize SUV. I have shortlisted the base variants of the Tata Sierra and Kia Seltos, but I am concerned about power delivery. Between the two, which offers better pickup with a naturally aspirated engine and better value for money?

The base variants of both the Tata Sierra and Seltos come with naturally aspirated 1.5-litre engines. If you are looking for performance and good power delivery, the Seltos' 1.5 engine is better.
In fact, the Tata 1.5 NA engine is the weak link in the Sierra, as performance and power delivery are sluggish and nowhere near as responsive as the Kia Seltos’ engine.

I want to purchase a new vehicle with a maximum budget of ₹22 lakh. I am slightly confused between the Tata Harrier (diesel), Tata Sierra (diesel), and Tata Safari (diesel). I prefer a diesel car, and my priorities are good looks and low maintenance. Which one should I consider?

The Tata Sierra is a smaller car than the Tata Harrier and Tata Safari, which are in a segment above. But if you like good looks, then the Sierra with its stunning design wins hands down.
Also, the 1.5 diesel is cheaper to maintain than the 2.0 diesels in the Harrier and Safari. So, in view of your preference for a diesel Tata SUV, the Sierra is the best choice.

Dear Autocar team, I’m planning to buy a new SUV with a budget of ₹20-₹25 lakh. Please suggest which would be a good one when comparing Sierra, New Seltos, etc. Also, please let me know if there’s a good 7-seater available in this range. Thank you.

The new Tata Sierra and new Kia Seltos are both excellent 5-seat SUVs packed with the latest features and tech. The Tata scores high on space and ride comfort, while the Seltos is big on quality and driving dynamics.

However, at this price, you could get a 7-seater too. If you don't mind the MPV body style, the Kia Carens Clavis offers the most spacious and practical cabin and is available with several different engines and gearboxes.

If you would like an SUV body style, consider the Hyundai Alcazar, though its third row and boot aren't quite as good as the Kia's.

I am planning to purchase a new automatic car in the next 6 months, with an on-road budget of ₹20 lakh in Bangalore. I am preferably looking for an SUV with a 5-star safety rating and a large boot of around 500 litres. I like the Tata Sierra, but am wary of its new naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with a DCA automatic. My annual running is low at around 7,000km, with about 30% highway usage. I understand that my usage does not ideally suit a diesel, but I am still interested due to the mileage and torque benefits. My main concern with diesel engines is DPF issues, given my low running. Do the Sierra or other Tata diesel cars face DPF issues with limited highway use? Are there any better alternatives that suit my requirements?

The Tata Sierra is a very appealing car and definitely worth considering. We have driven the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol with the DCA automatic, and while it is smooth, it feels sluggish, especially on the highway. Quick overtakes of fast-moving trucks require planning and effort.
Given that around 30% of your driving is on highways, we would recommend a diesel car instead. It is torquey, has a strong mid-range, and is much better suited to overtaking and relaxed long-distance driving.
Regarding DPF concerns, the issue is not low annual mileage but driving pattern. Diesel particulate filters need the car to be driven at steady speeds for some time to clean themselves. Since you do have regular highway usage, your driving pattern should allow the DPF to regenerate properly, making clogging unlikely in normal use.

I want to buy a Tata Sierra but can’t decide between petrol and diesel. I’m hesitant about petrol due to low mileage, and I’m interested in diesel but concerned about DPF issues in BS6 diesel engines. Can you please suggest which one is best to buy?

The Tata Sierra diesel is the most popular variant right now and accounts for 50 percent of the bookings. If you follow basic DPF regeneration protocols like a 25-30min long drive at a steady speed of 50-60kph every month or so, you shouldn’t have DPF problems.

Also, unlike the Kia 1.5 diesel, the Tata 1.5 diesel in the new Sierra is not known to have major issues with DPF clogging. So go ahead and buy the Sierra diesel.
