Given your annual running of 8,000-10,000km and predominantly city-based usage in Delhi NCR, a naturally aspirated petrol automatic is the right choice. That's why we'd suggest narrowing your decision down to the Creta IVT and Seltos IVT, rather than the Tata Sierra Turbo AT. While the Sierra is an impressive package, the turbo-petrol powertrain is likely to be less efficient and more expensive to run over the long term than the Hyundai-Kia 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol.Between the Creta and Seltos, the nod goes to the Seltos. The Tata Sierra is a large and capable SUV, and for your work, would give loads of space for camera gear and garment boxes alike, but in your budget of Rs 15-16 lakh, you will only get the base model. Moreover, the downside of it being a large and heavy vehicle is that the mileage is not great compared to rivals, whether comparing the petrol or diesel versions. However, should you go with the Sierra and want to get the maximum mileage, the diesel is probably the best way to go, and if possible, we would recommend stretching the budget by at least Rs 1-1.5 lakh to get a few more features.Consider the Kia Seltos instead - it too has a large and spacious cabin, almost as big as that of the Sierra, and good boot space as well. However, its engines, comparable to what you get in the Sierra, offer better real-world mileage. And, as safety is another concern, the Seltos has scored a 5-star Bharat NCAP crash test rating, just like the Sierra. What's more, you can get mid-spec variants, at least with the petrol engines, in your budget of Rs. 15-16 lakh, so you don't necessarily have to increase it so much. If you want even more space, and don't mind picking an MPV over an SUV, the Kia Carens Clavis is a far more practical option.

The Mahindra Scorpio N is due for a facelift later this year, so if your father likes it and doesn't mind waiting, it could be worthwhile. However, while it has great road presence, it won't meet your other requirement of good mileage. The Scorpio N is a large, heavy, ladder-frame SUV whose focus is on strong performance and responsiveness, rather than mileage, so prepare for much lower figures than what you get in your Kia Sonet. Moreover, owing to its top-heavy ladder-frame layout, it won't drive as well as the Sonet, at least in terms of handling and sharp dynamics. What you get instead is a commanding driving position and a tough, robust feel from the driver's seat. For a good mix of road presence and driving dynamics, check out the Tata Sierra. You'll get a decently feature-packed variant around Rs 20 lakh. Also, it is the most spacious in the class, and the turbo-petrol and diesel engines come with a smooth torque-converter automatic that works well around town and on the highway. Moreover, since it is a monocoque SUV, it has more car-like driving dynamics, easier manoeuvrability, better ride quality and better refinement. For your requirements, the Sierra is the better pick.

Between the two Tata cars that you've shortlisted, go for the Sierra. Considering you will be using the SUV in the city, it's relatively more compact and easier to drive, with lighter controls, yet doesn't give up too much in terms of space. It also has more features than the Harrier, including a three-screen setup on the dashboard in top trims. Both cars have 5-star crash test ratings from Bharat NCAP, since safety is a concern for you. The Sierra also has an edge on comfort, with the softer, more compliant suspension setup, while the Harrier feels firm, comparatively.However, being large and heavy SUVs, neither is particularly good on fuel economy, especially if you drive mostly in the city. Tata's new 1.5-litre petrol engine feels smooth and powerful in both SUVs, but in our real-world tests, returned poor figures in the Sierra. The diesel might be the better choice if fuel economy is a criterion, though beware of the additional maintenance required, such as DPF regeneration.With mostly metro-city use at 25-30 km a day and rare highway runs, a strong-hybrid like the Maruti Suzuki Victoris might make more sense. It uses far less fuel in stop-go traffic, it is very quiet and smooth at low speeds, and it is easier to park than bigger SUVs. Coming from a Honda City, you will like how calm and smooth it feels, and the ride is comfortable over broken roads. Moreover, it too has received a 5-star crash test rating from Bharat NCAP. The trade-off is space, which isn't as much as you'll find in the Harrier or Sierra, and performance, which compared to the turbo-petrol engine, isn't as strong. For your usage though, we would recommend the Victoris strong hybrid.

With 50-60 km every day, a 400 km trip every couple of months, and a mix of city, highway and ghat roads around Shirala, the Tata Sierra diesel in the top trim will suit you better than the turbo petrol. Your running is high, so the diesel will use less fuel day to day and, over a few years, the lower fuel bills usually make up for the higher buying price. On hilly roads, the diesel’s stronger pull at low speeds makes life easy - fewer gear changes, cleaner overtakes, and it feels more relaxed when the car is full of people or luggage.There are a couple of points to know. A modern diesel has a soot filter in the exhaust - called a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). It needs regular warm runs to keep itself clean. Your daily 50-60 km should be enough, but those highway runs would be ideal for this. If you do many short, cold-start drives for a week or two, you may see a warning asking for a steady drive to clear it. The advantage of Tata's diesel is that it doesn't require AdBlue, as it uses a Lean NOx trap rather than a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to manage NOx, so that's one less thing you'll have to keep in mind.Pick the turbo petrol only if you value refinement above all else, and performance, which is much stronger than the diesel's. However, its fuel economy is nowhere near as good, and in our tests, we managed just 6.49kpl in the city and 13.7kpl on the highway.
