Trending Questions on Tata Sierra - Answered by Autocar Experts

I am looking for a petrol automatic SUV, as mostly my running is in the city with 3-4 short trips a year. I already drive a Hyundai Verna, so I want to avoid Hyundai and Kia. My main requirements are comfort, reliability and ride quality. Currently, I have been planning to buy the MG Hector Savy Pro 1.5 Turbo. Is it a good buy, and what else should I consider?

MG has recently updated the Hector with minor changes, but the pricing now looks quite attractive. Hector gives you a lot of space and features at an attractive price point. The ride quality is great too, and while MG has improved its service network over the years, it still does not score very high on reliability. The 1.5-litre turbo-petrol isn’t the most fuel-efficient in stop-go traffic. If space, comfort and features are your top priorities, the Hector is a strong value-for-money choice.
If you’re open to alternatives, the Tata Sierra is worth keeping an eye on. It is an all-new product that promises a comfortable ride and a roomy cabin. However, being a new model, it may be wise to wait for real-world ownership feedback before deciding.
The other option is the recently launched Mahindra XUV 7XO. It offers strong engines, a new impressive suspension setup and a long feature list, but to get all the creature comforts it offers, you may need to stretch your budget for higher variants.

I want to upgrade to a new automatic car primarily for city driving in Bangalore, with occasional highway trips. My budget is ₹15 to 17 lakh. Should I choose the Kia Seltos or Tata Sierra, or is there a better option?

The powertrain to pick in the Tata Sierra lineup is the 1.5 Turbo Petrol with AT, but for that, you will have to pay around 21 lakhs. Within your budget, you can consider the Kia Seltos HTK CVT. The 1.5-litre petrol engine is a smooth and refined one, and the CVT on offer is one of the smoothest gearboxes in the segment. While CVTs have a rubber band effect, it's not that apparent in city driving, where it feels smooth. Seltos is now bigger than earlier and has decent features too.

I am seeking your expert guidance to help me select a suitable car based on my driving style and usage pattern. My average monthly running is 2,000-2,300 km. I currently drive a Hyundai Venue 1.0 Turbo DCT, and over the last six years, I have covered approximately 1,15,000 km in it, with a monthly fuel expense of about ₹18,000-₹20,000. My usage pattern is 60% city driving and 40% highway driving. I would like to upgrade my car, and I am confused between the Kia Seltos (IVT 1.5 NA / 1.5L turbocharged) and the Tata Sierra (1.5L DCA / 1.5 turbo Hyperian). Considering the above, I would appreciate your recommendations on a car that offers a good balance of performance, fuel efficiency, reliability, and long-term ownership value. Looking forward to your valuable suggestions. Thank you in advance for your time and support. Warm regards, Yogesh Rawat

Of the two cars you've suggested, and given your requirements, we would recommend the new Kia Seltos

For one, you'll find it a more natural upgrade from your Hyundai Venue 1.0 Turbo DCT, as both cars come from the same Hyundai Group family and use related hardware. That being said, the Seltos is built on a new-gen platform called K3 and comes with far more advanced tech. Especially when it comes to the infotainment system and connectivity.

Because the Seltos engines are unchanged from before, we know what to expect from them - whether the 1.5 naturally aspirated petrol or the 1.5 turbo petrol. Since your driving is 60% city, we would stick with the 1.5 petrol IVT, as it is the smoother and more efficient powertrain overall.

Kia, like Hyundai, tends to be reliable in the long run - as you've no doubt seen with your Venue - and maintenance costs are reasonable too. The Tata Sierra has promise, but its all-new engines are as yet unproven, and in our experience. While its 1.5 turbo petrol is smooth and powerful, the 1.5 naturally aspirated petrol feels underpowered in this size of car.

Hi! I want to buy a new small/mid-size car or SUV that has the best rear-seat AC (for Delhi summers) and a boot that can fit a full-size golf bag. My budget is up to ₹25 lakh. Please advise.

The new Tata Sierra has a strong air conditioner that cools its large cabin rather quickly. This is despite its large glass area, created by its huge panoramic sunroof. This is true of the second row, too, where the upward-tilted central AC vents do well to direct air to passengers.

Rear seat passengers have class-best space and comfort, too. Thanks to the immense leg room, headroom, and width. The Tata Sierra has a large boot as well, which will easily take a full-size golf bag.

I would like to buy a new family car or SUV within a maximum budget of 21 lakh (on-road). Petrol automatic is the preferred choice. Which one will be the best option to buy, considering good travel comfort and features? Sunroof is not considered.

We would recommend the Kia Seltos or the Tata Sierra, as they will meet your requirements for travel comfort and features very well. With the Sierra, you should look at the turbo direct-injection petrol, as this engine is very refined and delivers good performance, too. Within your budget, you will get the Adventure Plus variant, which will be well-equipped.
In the case of the Kia Seltos, the new car has made improvements in ride quality and rear space, so this too will meet your comfort requirements. As for engine choice, we would recommend the naturally aspirated 1.5-litre engine with the CVT gearbox, as it is smooth and refined, while not outright quick. It will do the job just fine.

I am planning to buy an automatic petrol SUV and am confused between the Mahindra XUV 7XO AX7T and the Tata Sierra Accomplished Plus. Please help.

The Mahindra XUV 7XO makes for a more logical choice. The Mahindra is more practical as it is a 7-seater, while the Tata Sierra is a 5-seater only.
The XUV 7XO also comes with a more powerful 203hp, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine compared to the Tata Sierra's 160hp, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol unit. Both SUVs come paired with a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. Furthermore, the XUV 7XO offers more features, including ventilated middle-row seats, a second wireless phone charger, and so on.

I am planning to buy a new car in April/May with an on-road budget of ₹15-20 lakh. I am confused between the Mahindra 3XO AX7L, Tata Sierra Adventure Plus, and the new Kia Seltos HTX, all with automatic turbo engines. My monthly running will be 400-600 km within Mumbai city, with 4-5 occasional highway trips a year. Since Sierra and Seltos are not yet available for test drives, I am unsure which to choose. Please guide me.

Between the three cars you have shortlisted, the Tata Sierra Adventure Plus is the nicest, especially because of its turbo-petrol engine and torque converter (automatic) combination. Its powertrain will feel smooth, refined and powerful, good for city and highway driving, both.

The Kia Seltos turbo's dual-clutch automatic can feel a bit jerky at low speeds or in bumper-to-bumper traffic conditions. If your usage is mainly in the city, opt for the 1.5L petrol-IVT instead, which is a far smoother option.

Since you have the budget, and don't mind opting for a larger car, we'd rule out the Mahindra XUV 3XO as the Sierra Turbo-AT or Seltos 1.5 Petrol-IVT deliver a more premium overall experience.

Hi, I currently own an XL6 and am planning to upgrade to a car with an ex-showroom budget of ₹24 lakh. I am confused between the top-end Tata Sierra petrol and the Tata Safari Accomplished X+ petrol variant. We are a family of 4 adults and 1 child aged 7, and we go on long trips at least once every two months. Please advise.

Since you don't need that extra row of seats, we'd suggest you look at the Tata Sierra. It is the newer car, it feels desirable and premium, it packs the latest technology and features, and its interiors feel like a huge step forward in terms of quality and fit-finish.
The turbo-petrol is impressively refined; it delivers strong performance, and the overall drive experience is smooth and comfortable. And because of its excellent ride-handling balance, it'll be an ideal choice for your occasional long drives too.

I am planning to buy a new car up to ₹17 lakh, with a yearly running of about 12,000 km. I am thinking of the Tata Sierra. Please guide me, as safety and comfort are my priorities.

Yes, the Tata Sierra will meet your requirements of safety and comfort very well. In terms of active safety, the Sierra has good grip around corners and good high-speed stability, too. The safety equipment is also elaborate with 6 airbags, electronic stability program (ESP) and after-impact braking standard across variants.

The Sierra is yet to be tested at either GNCAP or BNCAP; however, Tata Motors says the car is designed for a good rating and given the company's track record, this should be the case. As for comfort, the ride quality is good, and there is ample space inside. The seats, too, are comfy and at the rear, there's enough space for three to be seated in comfort.

I am looking to buy a new petrol turbo car around ₹25 lakh on-road in Bangalore and am confused between the new Kia Seltos and Tata Sierra. I like the design and cabin experience of the Tata Sierra, while the Seltos is strong on aftersales and service. Sierra is generally considered better for safety, although Seltos has also improved safety with its new platform. My top priority is family safety, so I am inclined toward Sierra, but I want to know how significant Tata’s reliability issues are and whether I should instead choose the Seltos.

Your observations are correct. Neither the Tata Sierra nor the Kia Seltos has been crash tested by Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP yet. But Tata Motors cars have had a good track record with these tests. While the Kia Seltos uses an all-new global platform that should be safer than the outgoing model.

Both SUVs feature the latest in active and passive safety features, which should be a reassurance, and thus, on the safety front, you won't be wrong to go with either. As for other factors, the Sierra is certainly the more spacious of the two and edges the Seltos out on comfort as well.

However, in most other areas, it's the Seltos that comes out on top, including, as you have pointed out, after-sales experience. The Sierra is being produced at the ex-Ford plant in Sanand, Gujarat. It is said to have higher manufacturing standards, and the brand has been committed to improving its after-sales service across the country, but the results of that will take some time to show.
