I’m a new driver looking for a comfortable and reliable five-seater car. I’m considering the Maruti Suzuki Victoris VXI (₹11.80 L ex-showroom) and the Tata Sierra Smart Plus (₹11.49 L ex-showroom). Could you help me compare these two options in terms of comfort, driving ease for beginners, safety features, running costs, and long-term reliability? Between the two, based on your requirements, the Maruti Suzuki Victoris VXI is the more sensible choice. Unlike the Tata Sierra Smart Plus, the VXI sits one variant above the base and is noticeably better equipped. In fact, the Smart Plus variant of the Tata Sierra feels quite bare for a midsize SUV, missing features that are now considered standard in the segment. It includes a proper infotainment system, which matters for day-to-day convenience and ease of ownership.
From a driving perspective, the Victoris is easier to live with, especially for a beginner. Its 1.5 litre naturally aspirated petrol engine is smooth. It offers better performance than the Sierra’s petrol motor and, paired with a light clutch and slick gearbox, makes city driving far less tiring. Maruti Suzuki’s engines also have a long-standing reputation for reliability, low running costs and fuss-free ownership, which is reassuring for a first-time buyer. The Sierra’s 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine is refined. But in a car of this size, it feels underpowered and requires more effort to drive, particularly with passengers on board.

We’re planning to buy a 5-seater family car that will largely be used by senior citizens. Ease of getting in and out is a major consideration, so we’re avoiding cars that sit too low or are excessively tall. It will be chauffeur-driven and won’t be used daily, which makes cabin comfort, suspension, and rear-seat convenience key priorities. It will mostly be used in the city; highway use will be very limited. Budget is approximately ₹15 lakh. What do you recommend?
There are lots of models that fit within your budget. However, we'd trim the list of probables to the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Tata Sierra and Kia Carens Clavis, each of which offers easy entry and exit.
The Maruti Suzuki Brezza is the smallest and most affordable of the three options, but scores well for its comfortable seats and good ride quality. It isn't the best 5-seat vehicle, but it can be used as one for intra-city journeys without discomfort.
Tata's Sierra is one of the hottest cars in the market right now, and suits your needs for its plush suspension and roomy interior. There's enough space at the back for three to sit in comfort. The base petrol engine will suit your usage.
The Kia Carens Clavis is also a good option. The rear section of the cabin is spacious, and the inclusion of a third row of seats gives plenty of flexibility, too. You can consider the naturally aspirated petrol engine.

Which is better: Tata Harrier or Tata Sierra, both petrol automatic?
Both the Tata Harrier and Sierra use the same 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, so the decision really comes down to what you value more: space and performance, or design and premiumness.
In the Harrier, this engine feels smoother, more refined and noticeably peppier than it does in the Sierra. It produces 170hp and 280 Nm of torque, which is 10hp and 25 Nm more than the Sierra’s version. The Harrier is also wider and more spacious overall, making it the better choice if cabin room is a priority.
The Tata Sierra, however, offers a more modern, upmarket feel. Its design is striking, and the interiors are more premium than the Harrier’s. The back seat is excellent, ride quality is very good, and its slightly more compact dimensions make it easier to park and manoeuvre in the city.
So, if you want stronger performance and more space, the Harrier makes more sense. If you prefer standout design, a richer cabin experience and easier urban usability, the Sierra is very appealing.

I’m confused between the Tata Sierra turbo petrol and the Thar Roxx diesel automatic. This will be my first car. It should be a comfortable five-seater. Majority usage would be in Bangalore city.
The Tata Sierra and the Mahindra Thar Roxx are completely different vehicles. The Roxx is a hardcore off-roader built on a body-on-frame chassis that can withstand a lot of abuse. However, as a daily driver, it's not as user-friendly or comfortable as the Tata Sierra.
The Sierra's back seat is very spacious, and the ride quality is exceptional. The Thar Roxx has a wide rear seat too, but has a lumpy ride, lacks, and is a bit cumbersome to handle compared to the more compact and agile Sierra.

I am a first-time car buyer, confused between the Sierra, Seltos and Thar Roxx. Most of my driving will be from town to town and on highways, with long tours and less city usage. I am also looking for comfort for my aged parents. Budget is Rs 10-15 lakh. Please suggest which to buy.
The Thar Roxx is a rugged off-roader that can take a lot of abuse, so if your driving is mainly on rough roads, it is a good option. However, the ride is a bit bumpy, and the step into the cabin is quite high, which might be inconvenient for your elderly parents. It makes more sense to look at the Sierra or Seltos.
For your budget, you will have to consider only manual transmission options. Between the two, the Kia Seltos is better to drive, but the spacious rear seats of the Sierra are more comfortable. So if your parents are mainly going to be sitting in the rear, we would suggest the Tata Sierra.

I want to purchase a mid-size SUV. I am staying in a rural village. I travel two to three times a month by car with my family of five. Overall, I drive about 1,000 km per month. I mostly prefer travelling by car over bus or train for long trips as well (around 2,000 km to and fro). Mileage is also important to me. My Tiago gives 12-13 kmpl in the city and 17-19 kmpl on highways, averaging 16-16.5 kmpl overall. Can I go for a diesel car or a petrol car? Please suggest. Budget is Rs 16 to 18 lakh.
Since you have been a happy Tata owner, you could consider upgrading to the Tata Sierra 1.5 Diesel. It has an efficient engine, a plush ride quality, and its cabin not only feels upmarket but is also spacious enough to seat five adults comfortably. With a Rs 16-18 lakh budget, you could opt for the Pure Diesel MT variant, which covers the basics well.

Hi, I am confused between the Tata Sierra Adv+ Diesel and the Tata Harrier Pure X Diesel. Please guide me in choosing the perfect vehicle.
Both cars are similarly priced, but the Tata Sierra Adventure Plus variant has a few more features than the Harrier Pure X. The Sierra also has a slight edge over the Harrier when it comes to ride comfort, thanks to its Frequency Selective Dampers (FSD). Also, being the newer car, the Sierra feels more desirable, too.
That said, the Tata Harrier has a larger and more powerful 2.0-litre diesel engine, so performance is a lot more effortless in comparison, especially on the highway.
In summary, if you want the newer, better-equipped car, and you're usage is majorly in the city, the Sierra is the one to go for; but if you drive on the highways more often, go for the Harrier, for its larger diesel engine.

Hi Team. I am planning to buy a new SUV, and I took a test drive of the Tata Sierra and MG Hector. I loved the MG Hector, and the feel is great. I know there is a concern around mileage, but it is okay for me as my driving is not much. Please suggest if I can go ahead with the Hector or if I should consider some other option.
The MG Hector is a good choice if you’re happy with the way it drives and feels. It’s a size up from the Sierra and offers a wider, more accommodating rear seat. In fact, Hector’s back seat is among the most comfortable in its class. It’s easy to get in and out of, and the soft ride only adds to the sense of comfort. The boot is larger than the Sierra’s too, with a generous 587 litres of space.
The Tata Sierra is a good option as well and is nicer to drive, but it is a bit more expensive and not as spacious as the Hector. Yes, the Hector does have a reputation for being a bit of a gas guzzler, but, as you mentioned, since you don’t drive much, it shouldn’t hit your pocket too hard.

Want to buy a new car in the range of Rs 15 to 20 lakh. My driving is around 25,000 km per year, mostly on highways. We are a family of four. Good fuel economy is essential. Please advise which car I should buy.
Since you frequent highways and the economy is a priority, a diesel SUV would be a good choice for you. In the Rs 15-20 lakh price range, the Kia Seltos is the newest option and has the right makings with a strong diesel engine, a well-equipped cabin and Kia's widespread network. The HTK (O) trim comes well packed with features that you would need and makes for a strong case.
The Tata Sierra is also an option to consider if the Seltos' design is a bit too over the top for you. The Sierra has lots of room in the cabin, and the diesel engine is refined and punchy as well.
If both these dont sit well with you, the Hyundai Creta is the safest bet. It has a clean, no-nonsense design, a well-equipped cabin and the same strong diesel engine as the Seltos. It will also hold its value better since the Creta brand name is much stronger.
All three have good room in the cabin, and boot space for four is sufficient too.
