I am planning to buy a car with an automatic transmission and have shortlisted two options: the Kia Seltos HTX IVT and Tata Sierra TGDI Adventure Plus. I am upgrading from a 2018 Maruti Ciaz 1.4-litre. Which one should I choose?

The Seltos HTX IVT is the safer and more sensible upgrade from a Ciaz, offering a more refined and hassle-free ownership experience. The Tata Sierra is worth considering only if you specifically want a more rugged, characterful SUV and are willing to accept a slightly less proven ownership proposition.

I am planning to buy a new crossover within a month and want to keep it for four to five years. My priorities are good resale value, decent highway acceleration and mileage. My budget is Rs 15-17.5 lakh, and I am considering only cars with a DCT, torque-converter, CVT or IVT automatic. Between the two, the Seltos is the better choice, especially if you are looking at the base variant. It feels more premium, is the newer product and offers a more complete package even in its lower variants.The 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol makes 115hp and 144Nm. It isn't a particularly powerful engine, but it is smooth and refined and is perfectly adequate for normal city driving.For overtaking, it won't have the punch of the Seltos turbo, but it isn't underpowered either. With a full load and during quick highway overtakes, you may need to plan ahead and use higher revs. The Grand Vitara's 1.5 petrol is also a smooth, simple powertrain, but its performance is more relaxed and the base variant is quite sparsely equipped.

I have been using a Venue diesel since June 2021 and am now looking to upgrade. In the past five years, I have not faced a single DPF or any other issue with the car. My shortlist includes the Creta and the new Seltos. My heart says Creta, but my mind says new Seltos. Which one should I go for?

Since your 2021 Venue has completed five years without a single DPF or other issue, you already have a positive Hyundai ownership experience. If your heart is also with the Creta, there is little reason to ignore that preference.The new Kia Seltos is the more substantial and feature-rich product, but the Creta offers a very similar mechanical package, excellent comfort and a more familiar ownership proposition. If you are planning to keep the next car for several years, the difference in features shouldn't outweigh your preference for the Hyundai Creta.The Seltos makes sense if you specifically want its additional space, features or styling, but there is no compelling reason to choose it purely for reliability or mechanical reasons.
