MG Windsor
The MG Windsor sits between the Comet and the ZS EV in MG's line-up, and it has been a big hit. Within months of its launch in September 2024, it was selling over 3,000 units a month, which made it India's bestselling electric car. The MG Windsor EV doesn't fit into one body style. It looks part MPV and part hatchback, with plenty of space for passengers inside. As of now, it is sold in 6 variants and you have the option to choose either a 38kWh or a 52.9kWh battery pack, both of which use the same 136hp motor. You can also buy it with MG's battery rental plan, which further reduces the upfront cost.
Our Experts' Take: The Windsor EV is roomy, easy to drive and well equipped. Its real-world range is also close to MG's claim. However, it isn't perfect, as road noise creeps in at higher speeds and too many controls are buried in the touchscreen. Despite these drawbacks, it's an easy recommendation for anyone looking for a comfortable electric family car for the city.

Windsor Road Test Findings
What we liked
- The rear seat feels like a lounge. Three adults fit comfortably, the floor is flat, and you can recline the backrest for a nap on long drives.
- It is very easy to drive. Power comes in smoothly, the steering is light in the city, and the brake energy regeneration is among the best calibrated we have used.
- Its real-world range came remarkably close to MG's claimed figure, which very few EVs manage in our tests.
- It offers a lot for the money, and MG backs it with a lifetime battery warranty for the first owner and a buyback plan.
What we did not like
- Cabin insulation is poor. Road noise gets loud past 70-80kph, and people outside can hear your music or phone calls.
- Almost everything, even adjusting the mirrors, is done through the touchscreen, which could be a hassle for some.
- The ride feels stiff and crashy over bad roads at low speeds, and there is no spare wheel or rear wiper.
Who Should Buy The Windsor?
Who it suits | Why? |
Families who want space and comfort | As per our experts at Autocar India, it beats many similarly priced EVs on cabin space and comfort |
Owners who are driven by a chauffeur | The reclining rear seat makes the back the best place to be. You can even catch a nap on the way. |
City commuters who can charge at home | For short daily drives, we think an EV like the Wind sor makes far more sense than a diesel, and charging at home keeps running costs very low. |
Families with elderly members | Its tall stance and wide-opening doors make getting in and out easy for older passengers. |
As per our experts at Autocar India, the Windsor EV may not suit those who frequently cover long distances, as its range is shorter and its fast charging is slower. As a result, you will need to stop more often to charge on long trips.

MG Windsor price & variants
The easiest way to understand the Windsor range is by its battery. The Excite, Exclusive and Essence variants use the 38kWh battery. The Excite covers the basics with a 10.1-inch screen and six airbags, the Exclusive adds the big 15.6-inch screen, alloys and a 360-degree camera, and the Essence brings the glass roof, ventilated seats and Infinity sound system.
The Exclusive Pro and Essence Pro variants get the bigger 52.9kWh battery, and only the Essence Pro comes with ADAS and a powered tailgate. There is also an Indulge Edition based on the Essence, with a gold paint shade and a screen for rear passengers.
The MG Windsor price in India starts at Rs 14.85 lakh for the base variant, Excite EV and goes up to Rs 19.15 lakh for the top variant, Essence Pro EV (ex-showroom). Meanwhile MG Windsor on road price in major India cities, Delhi, Pune, and Mumbai, ranges from Rs 15.74 lakh to Rs 20.30 lakh. If you opt for MG's battery rental plan, you pay up to Rs 5 lakh less upfront. In return, you pay a fee for every km you drive: Rs 3.99 for the 38kWh battery and Rs 4.5 for the 52.9kWh battery.
Which Windsor variant should you buy?
- Best value: The Exclusive variant will be our pick. It gives you most of the features you will want, such as a big screen and the 360-degree camera, without having to pay the premium for top variants.
- For intercity drives: If you often drive out of town, go for the Exclusive Pro variant. Its bigger battery gives you a lot more range for longer trips.
- For low running: If the Windsor will be a second car that you won’t drive that often, in that case, opt for the battery rental plan. It will bring down the upfront price and you will pay only for what you drive.
- Worth skipping: The Essence and Essence Pro variants. As per us, the few features they add don't justify the higher price. You should also ship the base Excite variant, unless your budget is tight, as it misses out on many useful features.
Note: The base Excite comes only in Pearl White, and Level 2 ADAS is offered only on the Essence Pro.

7.0
The MG Windsor blends MPV, hatchback, and SUV traits in a unique mono-volume silhouette. Though shorter than a Creta, it stands out with a remarkable 1,850mm width and striking road presence. Design highlights include 18-inch alloys, pop-out door handles, and a lightbar-linked rear. However, the absence of a rear wiper and washer is a glaring omission. Its SUV stance is enhanced by 186mm ground clearance, roof rails, and piano black cladding.
8.0
Entry and exit are easy thanks to its tall stance and wide-opening doors. A massive 15.6-inch touchscreen dominates the dashboard, though the smaller 8.8-inch instrument cluster feels out of place. The flat dashboard with built-in cupholders and generous ambient lighting lends it character. Seat comfort is good, though firmer cushioning and reduced lumbar padding would help. The standout feature is the reclinable ‘aero-lounge’ rear bench, ideal for chauffeur-driven buyers. A flat floor improves space, and while the rear seat is wide enough for three, the knees-up position may bother some. Boot space is class-leading at 604 litres (579 litres with subwoofer). However, there's no spare tyre unless opted for separately.
7.0
The 136hp front-mounted motor offers smooth, progressive performance and does 0-100kph in 9.8 seconds. Drive modes (Eco+, Eco, Normal, Sport) adjust throttle response, though acceleration differences are minimal beyond part-throttle use. Top speed is 153kph, and there are three levels of regenerative braking, with effective one-pedal driving possible. However, road and ambient noise easily filter into the cabin, impacting refinement.
7.0
Claimed MIDC range is 332km. In real-world tests, the Windsor averaged 8.1km/kWh, equating to 308km on a full charge. Efficiency drops significantly in Normal mode. Fast charging up to 45kW allows 0-80% in 55 minutes, while an 11kW AC charger tops up 25-80% in 3.5 hours.
7.0
Ride quality is harsh over rough roads due to stiff suspension and limited travel. At low speeds, it feels unsettled, but highway stability is excellent. Steering is light in the city and weights up well at speed. It’s not made for enthusiastic cornering but holds well thanks to its wide stance and 215-section tyres.
8.0
Top-spec variants get a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, powered driver’s seat, wireless charging (slow), and a fantastic 9-speaker Infinity audio system. Safety kit includes six airbags, 360-degree camera, ESP, TPMS, and auto-dimming mirror. The infotainment system supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, but it’s laggy and houses too many core functions, making usability frustrating. Missing items include rear sunblinds, a parcel shelf, and a rear wiper+washer.
9.0
Priced between Rs 13.99–16.14 lakh, the Windsor offers tremendous value. MG’s Battery-as-a-Service plan lowers entry cost by Rs 3.5 lakh, and buyback schemes guarantee up to 60% resale value after 3 years. Warranty coverage is generous, with a lifetime battery warranty for first owners.

MG Windsor Range
The MG Windsor EV range is one of its strong points. As per ARAI, the 38kWh battery can cover 332 km on a full charge. Meanwhile, the bigger 52.9kWh battery on the Pro variants can cover 449 km.
When we tested the 38kWh version in the real world, it went 327km in the city and 289km on the highway, which works out to an average of 308km. That is just 24km short of the claimed figure. We are yet to test the 52.9kWh version, but if it is as efficient, it should cross 400km in the real world.

Questions you may find useful
Hi Autocar team, I currently own a 2023 Tata Harrier and a 2011 Maruti Suzuki Alto. I use the Alto for my daily commute and the Harrier for long highway trips. I now want to replace the Alto with an EV for everyday use. I like the comfort and pricing of the MG Windsor Essence, but I am confused between the Windsor and the Tata Curvv EV. Which would you recommend?
Go for the MG Windsor Essence. It is a better fit for your requirements, particularly for daily commuting. The Windsor has a spacious cabin, a wide rear seat and a more premium feel. The Curvv EV is a good product, but its cabin does not offer the same level of space and comfort. The Windsor also has a larger battery and a longer claimed range, giving you more flexibility for occasional longer drives. MG's EV ownership experience has also been positive, and the Windsor feels like a well-rounded product. Its main drawback is that MG's service network is not as extensive as Tata's, although this may be less of a concern if you primarily use it in the city.Overall, the Windsor Essence is the more spacious and comfortable option for your daily commute.
Hi Autocar Team, I am currently driving a 2014 Honda City diesel and am looking to replace it with an EV. A few options I have in mind are the Mahindra BE 6 Pack One, Tata Sierra Pure 63 kWh, and MG Windsor EV. My budget is under Rs. 20 lakh. I would appreciate your suggestions and recommendations.
The Tata Sierra Pure 63 makes you feel like you've spent your money well thanks to a rich cabin experience. Coming from a Honda City, it'll feel like a proper upgrade as far as space, comfort, performance and ride handling go.The Mahindra BE 6 Pack One is an interesting option from a design and technology perspective. It feels like the sportiest one to drive of the three; however, cabin space feels cramped given its exterior dimensions. The Windsor EV is the most affordable of the lot, and even though it is more compact than the others, due to its excellent packaging, cabin and boot space are better than the others. Do keep in mind, though, that the Windsor's battery is the smallest and its real-world range will be much lower than the others. Also, its DC fast-charging speeds don't match the others. Lastly, its ride comfort isn't as plush as the Tata's either. In summary, the BE 6 is the sportiest to drive, the Windsor is good value, but given its excellent comfort, range and driving manners, the Sierra EV is our pick of the lot.
I am confused whether I should go for EV or not. I own 2 cars. One is an 8 year old i20 and other one is a 4 year old XUV 700 AX5 MT PTR. I am thinking of changing i20. Which EV will be suitable for highway and city use. I have driven Vinfast VF6 and MG Windsor. Both are good but Vinfast is new to India. Kindly suggest
Considering your intended usage, go for the Vinfast VF6. It's much better suited to both city and highway use, thanks to its strong, BMW-derived chassis, which gives a lot more confidence in a variety of conditions. It's also more powerful and has a bigger battery with longer range. Vinfast is a relatively new brand, but it has put in a lot of investment to make sure its aftersales and service is on par with the rest. The MG Windsor has the advantage on interior space, but that's about it. Another car you could consider, especially since you are coming from a Hyundai, is the Kia Syros EV. It falls in the same price range, offers similar space to the Windsor and range similar to the Vinfast. It is the safer choice of the three, but between your shortlisted EVs, the VF6 makes more sense for you.
I’m currently driving a Honda City MT i-VTEC as my daily driver in the city, but I’m not happy with its mileage. My daily usage in the city is around 20-30 km. I’ve shortlisted the Kia Seltos MT Diesel and MG Windsor. Please suggest which of these would be the better choice. Thanks.
With a daily city usage of 20-30 km, a diesel Seltos is not the right choice. Modern diesels need regular highway runs to keep the DPF healthy, and your usage pattern is predominantly short city trips. The fuel savings from diesel will also take a very long time to justify the higher purchase cost at your running. If you can arrange for home charging, the MG Windsor EV seems to be a better fit for your usage. This MG car is a very spacious, comfortable family car with a premium feel. Since your usage isn't much, you could consider the small battery version instead of the Pro - it'll be more affordable.
I drive around 6-8 km daily in heavy traffic in Gurgaon, with a monthly running of around 220-400 km. I am looking to upgrade from an i10 CNG. I want an automatic car with Auto Hold, good suspension, and stable handling. Features such as a defogger, cruise control, and ventilated seats would be good to have. My on-road budget is around Rs. 15 lakh. I am considering the Syros EV HTK, Nexon EV Creative 45, MG Windsor Exclusive, and Victoris VXi AT. I am also considering waiting for the upcoming Bayon AT, XL6 AT, Hyundai Inster, and updated Fronx. Kindly suggest which would be the best option for my requirements.
For your usage pattern of 6-8 km daily in heavy Gurgaon traffic and a monthly running of 220-400 km, an EV is the most sensible choice. Your running is too low for a diesel or CNG to make financial sense, and the stop-start nature of your commute is where EVs really shine with their smooth, silent operation and negligible running costs. The Kia Syros EV HTK would be our top recommendation from your shortlist. This Kia car offers a well-rounded package with a comfortable ride, a good feature set and a mature ownership experience. The MG Windsor Exclusive is also worth considering if rear seat space is a priority, but the Syros EV feels like the more complete product overall. The Nexon EV Creative 45 is a good value proposition, but the Syros EV feels like the more polished and premium offering. The Victoris VXI AT is a solid petrol alternative, but given your usage and budget, the EV route makes far more sense. As for the upcoming launches, the Bayon AT and Inster are all interesting options, but none are likely to fundamentally change the equation for your specific usage pattern. The Syros EV HTK is the car that will make you happiest after five years of ownership.
