I'm looking for a Diesel automatic car with 40% city and 60% Highway driving, with around 1500kms per month with a budget between 12 to 15 lakhs. Please suggest a good vehicle. Used or new vehicle is considered.

There are quite a few diesel options within your budget, especially from the compact SUV segment. The list of contenders includes the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Kia Syros, Mahindra XUV 3XO and Tata Nexon. Which one suits you best depends on your key requirements. 

The Hyundai Venue is a great all-rounder offering good refinement, new-age features, reasonable rear seat space and a large boot. The Kia Sonet has many of the same strengths but loses out on rear seat space. If cabin space is a key requirement, the Kia Syros is the ideal pick. It's the roomiest compact SUV and cabin quality is also very good. However, the design is not to everyone's liking. 

The Mahindra XUV 3X0 has a good engine, feels tough and offers enough space for three to sit in comfort at the back. Boot space isn't as generous as the others, though. Tata's Nexon diesel feels peppy and the suspension is well suited to our bad roads but the package isn't as refined or polished as alternatives. 

If it's an automatic transmission you're keen on, the Hyundai and Kia are the one's to consider. Their torque converter automatic transmissions work superbly with the 1.5-litre diesel engines to deliver a truly upmarket experience. The Sonet diesel-AT in HTX trim is great value.  

You could also get diesel versions of the Hyundai Creta, Tata Sierra or Kia Seltos for the same money. While these options are more spacious, you will have to settle for a low-spec trim without many features.

I am planning to buy a car on-road around 10-10.5 lakh. My drive is less than 200km per month, with occasional highway drives. I want a low-maintenance car that doesn't require money even if it is not being driven or kept still, as I mostly use a two-wheeler. I live in Chandigarh. A few options that I am considering are Baleno, Kia Sonet, Exter, Fronx, and Punch. All car agencies are available near my house.

Since you mostly use your two-wheeler and the car is only for occasional and limited use, we recommend getting a compact SUV, as at least it will be a bit more enjoyable on your highway drives. Of these shortlisted cars, we would recommend either the Kia Sonet or the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, as they both offer a relatively strong 1.0-litre turbo-petrol option. which will be beneficial on the highway, where the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engines may feel a little out of breath.
Both cars are relatively reliable, although historically Maruti has had the advantage in this area, with lower maintenance costs overall. We don't recommend leaving any car for too long without driving it, as that would lead to issues and consequently expenses. This should preferably be done at least once a week, even for a short drive around the block.

I have a budget of ₹14 lakh and wanted to buy the Kia Seltos Petrol HT e-Ornate variant. I went for a test drive but felt the car was underpowered, and I got disappointed. The features and finish are top-class, but the power is lacking. What are my options?

For a budget of Rs 14 lakh, it is admittedly difficult to find a mid-size SUV automatic that offers genuinely strong performance. The 1.5 petrol in the Kia Seltos HTE is smooth and refined, but it isn’t particularly punchy, which explains why it felt underpowered on your test drive.

If you are primarily driving yourself and rear seat space isn’t a top priority, it would make sense to look at the compact SUV segment instead. This is where you’ll find turbo-petrol engines that feel noticeably more energetic.

Since you liked the Seltos’ fit, finish and feature list, the Kia Sonet HTX is worth considering. It comes with the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol (118hp), which feels much more responsive in everyday driving. The Hyundai Venue (particularly the higher variants with the same 1.0 turbo engine) offers similar performance with a slightly different interior feel and feature mix.

Another very strong option is the Mahindra XUV 3XO. Its 1.2 TGDi engine (up to 131hp) is the most powerful in this class, and it combines strong performance with a spacious cabin and generous features for the money.

In short, if power is high on your priority list, moving to a turbo-petrol compact SUV will give you a much more satisfying driving experience within your budget.

Tell us the benefits and disadvantages of the 2026 Kia Sonet.

The Kia Sonet is one of the strongest all-rounders in the compact SUV segment.

On the plus side, it comes packed with modern tech and features, including ADAS on higher trims. There’s also a wide choice of engines and gearboxes from the naturally aspirated 1.2-litre petrol to the punchy 1.0-litre turbo-petrol (with DCT or iMT). 

Moreover, the torquey 1.5-litre diesel, paired with the 6-speed torque-converter automatic, offers a genuinely enjoyable driving experience. Its compact dimensions and light steering make it easy to manoeuvre in city traffic and tight parking spots. Many buyers are also drawn to its sharp design, SUV stance and strong resale value.

On the downside, rear seat space is not the best in class. Legroom can feel tight, especially if the front seats are pushed back, and three adults in the rear will be a squeeze. The suspension setup is slightly stiffer, which can make low-speed ride quality feel firm on rough roads. 

Also, most of the advanced safety and ADAS features are limited to higher trims; lower variants miss out on some key equipment. Unlike some rivals, there’s no factory-fit CNG option either.

Overall, the Sonet scores high on features, performance options and style. But rear space and ride comfort are areas where you should check carefully before deciding.

Hi, I’m using a Ford EcoSport AT petrol. I’m very happy with the car’s build quality, handling, and performance, but I’m concerned about the mileage. In Bangalore city, I get about 8 km/l, and on the highway it’s about 14 km/l. I want to upgrade to a similar SUV with greater mileage (over 20 km/l), good safety, and durability, costing between ₹10 L and ₹15 L on-road. Please suggest suitable options.

Unfortunately, there's no petrol automatic compact SUV today that will achieve anywhere near 20kpl in the real world, in the city or on the highway. The most efficient petrol compact SUVs are the Maruti Suzuki Fronx or Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor

If you want something more spacious, consider the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, though it is slightly less efficient. If you want more efficiency still, though, consider a diesel compact SUV like the Hyundai Venue or Kia Sonet. They are the smoothest and most efficient in the segment, and are more likely to get close to or surpass 20kpl.

Hi, I am planning to buy a compact SUV in one or two months. I am a bit confused between two options: the new Venue HX5+ and the Sonet HTK Plus. Both have the same 1.2 NA engine. I am looking for long-term ownership with good mileage and stability. Can you suggest?

Between the Hyundai Venue and the Kia Sonet, for long-term ownership, we would recommend you go for the new Venue.
The Hyundai Venue was recently launched and is a much newer product, whereas the Sonet has been around for nearly six years and is expected to be replaced or significantly updated next year. Buying a car that is closer to the beginning of its lifecycle generally makes more sense if you plan to keep it for many years, because it will stay relevant.
Another advantage the Venue has is rear seat space. The Kia Sonet has always been a bit cramped in the back, whereas the Venue offers better accommodation for rear passengers. If you often travel with family or friends, the extra space and comfort at the back will be noticeable over time.

Kia Sonet HTX Diesel AT vs Skoda Kyalq AT - which one should I go for? We are a family of 4-5 people and often go on outings with luggage. Also, for an enthusiast, which one would be better for long drives when comparing both at the same price point?

Between the Kia Sonet and the Skoda Kylaq, the Kylaq is the better choice for you, especially if driving enjoyment and long-distance comfort matter. It is the nicer car to drive, has a more comfortable ride on highways and feels excellent value for money. 

The Sonet is still a good all-round compact SUV, but it is not as engaging to drive as the Skoda Kylaq, particularly in terms of handling. Another factor to keep in mind is that the Sonet is expected to be replaced in about a year. It means there is a chance it could start feeling dated sooner than you would like. The rear seat on the Sonet is also on the tighter side.

Since you have mentioned that there will be occasions when five people travel together with luggage. It is important to note that both the Kylaq and the Kia Sonet are relatively narrow cars and are most comfortable as four-seaters on long trips. If proper five-seat comfort is a priority, the Mahindra XUV 3XO is a strong alternative. Its wider body allows it to accommodate five adults in better comfort. It is also a fun car to drive thanks to its punchy 1.2 turbo petrol engine and well-sorted suspension.

I’m planning to buy a petrol manual SUV with a budget of around ₹15 lakh (can stretch slightly if it’s really worth it). My usage: * Weekly driving: around 80-100 km * Occasional long highway trips (500 km to my hometown) * Planning more long rides in the future Currently, my budget suits the MG Astor, but I feel the engine may not be very punchy for highway overtakes. However, I’m getting a deal for the Volkswagen Taigun at around ₹16.5 lakh on-road for the Topline 2025 model. I don’t prefer the Tata Nexon (not a fan of the design), and the Kia Sonet felt a bit small for my comfort. My priorities: * Good highway stability and safety * Comfortable long-distance driving * Decent power for overtaking * Reasonable maintenance cost * Good rear seat comfort and boot space Given my usage, should I stretch my budget for the Taigun, or is the Astor sufficient? Are there any other petrol manual options around this budget that I should consider?

The MG Astor is a decent all-rounder amongst the mid-size SUVs, but it doesn't excel in any particular area. You're right to observe that its 1.5-litre petrol engine won't feel punchy enough for highway overtakes, and moreover, it doesn't give you that confident, planted feel at high speeds. Design aside, both the Tata Nexon and the Kia Sonet will feel cramped compared to other SUVs available at this price.
Given your priorities, you should definitely stretch for the Volkswagen Taigun Topline, as it seems to perfectly align with your needs. The 1.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine has loads of punch, the SUV feels superbly planted at highway speeds, and on top of that, it is comfortable as well.
It has a 5-star Global NCAP rating, so safety shouldn't be an issue, and since it is the Topline variant, it has plenty of features. There is a facelift of the Taigun coming later this year, but the price you are getting this 2025 example is too good to ignore, so we feel you should go for it.

If your usage is very low, then it is not advisable to buy a diesel car. The Hyundai Venue turbo petrol is a good option for you and will be more than sufficient for your needs.
Yes, the mileage will be lower than the diesel, but it should be fine given your low running. For reference, in our real-world fuel efficiency tests, the mechanically-identical Kia Sonet turbo petrol-DCT returned 11.6kpl in the city and 16.5kpl on the highway, so you can expect similar figures from the Venue as well.

Writing again to get a response. I am a first-time car buyer looking to purchase an automatic car within a budget of ₹13-13.5 lakh. I have shortlisted the Kia Sonet HTK(O) DCT, as it is feature-rich and offers modern features that are not available in competitors like the 3XO and Venue within this budget. I mainly drive in the city and less on the highways. Please advise.

If you have zeroed in on the Kia Sonet HTK(O) DCT, then go for it. The 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine is peppy, and the DCT automatic gearbox offers quick shifts. Overall, the Sonet is enjoyable to drive. As you pointed out, it is well-equipped, and the cabin feels plush and upmarket and has the quality of a more expensive car. The only real downside of the Sonet is that the back seat is cramped, so if you are travelling with your family regularly, that might be an issue.
The new Hyundai Venue, which is a sister car of the Sonet in its new avatar, has a bit more legroom and also has a premium feel. The Mahindra XUV 3XO has the most spacious cabin of the lot and is also worth considering. However, if you are mainly driving yourself and back seat comfort is not important, go ahead with the Sonet.
