I’m looking to buy a new compact SUV and am conflicted between the Sonet 1.2-litre petrol and the Maruti Brezza (1.5-litre petrol). My main concern is fuel efficiency - I’ve heard the Brezza’s 1.5 is more efficient than the Sonet’s 1.2. I’m also considering the Sonet diesel manual. My monthly running is about 1,000-1,200 km, mostly on highways. Which one should I buy?

Given that your usage is relatively high and mainly on the highway, you should go for the Kia Sonet diesel MT. Its strong pulling power compared to the naturally aspirated petrol engines you have mentioned will allow for more effortless cruising and overtaking, and the fuel efficiency will be considerably better too. 

You should also consider the new Hyundai Venue, as it is a bit more modern and more spacious than the Sonet. As for the fuel economy of the petrol engines, it depends on your driving style and conditions. Since your driving is mainly on the highway, the larger, more powerful 1.5-litre petrol in the Maruti Suzuki Brezza would likely be more efficient on the whole, as it would be less strained at higher speeds than the Sonet's 1.2 petrol.

My monthly usage will be about 400 km inside the city, and I will make long trips twice a year. I’m considering upgrading from my Xcent to the Venue. I need your insights to decide between the Venue HX6 1.2 litre and the HX6 DCT versions. I’m particularly concerned about the 1.0/1.2 engine’s reliability and the DCT’s maintenance requirements.

The 1.0-litre turbo petrol with the DCT has been used across several Hyundai and Kia cars, such as the Venue, i20 and the Sonet, and has proven reliable over time. 

Hyundai has also improved the gearbox’s smoothness, making it a well-rounded powertrain. Compared with the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine, the turbo offers a significant performance advantage, especially on the highway, and the 1.2-litre does not offer an automatic option either.

70-30% city-highway driving (learned driving recently), automatic, Rs 11-12 lakh ex-showroom budget, moderate road conditions, safety should be good, average monthly running of 800-1,000 km, mainly 4-seater (occasionally 5). I have shortlisted the XUV 3XO AX5 TC 1.2L (TCMPFi) and the Sonet HTX DCT 1.0L (GDi). I am also open to the Sonet iMT, but I have heard mixed reviews about its reliability. Hyundai is not offering it in the new Venue, which adds to the confusion.

The Mahindra's Turbo-petrol and torque converter (automatic) combination is smoother than the Kia's turbo-petrol and dual-clutch automatic combination. Furthermore, the Mahindra XUV 3XO is a well-built, solid car which feels confident at all speeds and even over the worst of road conditions.
It'll also be more comfortable for the occasional fifth passenger. Yes, the touch and feel, as well as the Kia Sonet's interior quality, feels superior to the XUV3XO, but on the whole, it is the Mahindra car that we'd recommend.

I want to buy a diesel car from Kia, preferably the Syros or Sonet. However, my usage is around 7,000 km per year. Which car would suit my requirements better, petrol or diesel? I prefer diesel because I used a Hyundai diesel car for 10 years earlier.

Both the Kia Seltos and Sonet diesels are competent and enjoyable, but with your usage of around 7,000km a year, a diesel simply doesn’t make financial or mechanical sense. The higher upfront cost of the diesel will take a long time to recover at that mileage, and you also won’t be using the engine in the way modern diesels are designed for.
A key concern is the DPF (diesel particulate filter). This sits in the exhaust and traps soot; every so often, it needs to get hot enough to burn that soot off in a process called regeneration. This typically happens when the car is driven for a sustained period at higher speeds and with the exhaust fully up to temperature. If your running is mostly short, low-speed trips, the DPF may not regenerate properly, leading to soot build-up, warning lights, reduced performance and, in the worst case, an expensive repair or replacement.
Given your usage, a petrol car makes far more sense. The 1.0 turbo-petrol with the 7-speed DCT gives you a strong mid-range punch that feels very close to a diesel in everyday driving, but without the DPF worries. It is smooth, refined and well suited to mixed city and highway use.
Between the Kia Sonet and Seltos, the Sonet is the better fit if you usually drive alone or with just one passenger; it’s more compact, easier to park and generally costs less to buy like-for-like. The Seltos is the one to pick if you regularly travel with family, thanks to its extra space, bigger boot and more “proper SUV” feel, though some variants are noticeably pricier.

I own a 2019 Glanza with about 70,000 km on the clock and want to switch to a sub-compact SUV. My monthly running is around 1,500 km, mostly on village roads with occasional highway trips. I’m considering the Sonet diesel because of the mileage, and I’ve also seen the new Venue but it’s pricier than before. Is the Sonet diesel a good choice, or do you recommend another model in this segment? My budget is about ₹14 lakh.

The Kia Sonet diesel is a good option, and you can safely go ahead with this.

However, if rear space is important to you, then you will find this very tight in the Sonet, especially so in comparison to your Toyota Glanza. If this is an issue for you, then you could consider the new Hyundai Venue; rear space is better, and on the whole, the car is a better option too. 

However, if you are not keen on the Venue, then you could consider the Mahindra 3XO, which has good space as well as offers a good ride along with engine performance.

Hi Team. I’m 34 from Mumbai and planning to buy my first car. I’m choosing between the Hyundai Venue HX8 DCT (around ₹15.5 lakh on-road) and the Kia Sonet HTX DCT (around ₹13.5 lakh after discounts). While the Sonet offers similar features and better interiors, I feel the Venue looks bigger, more premium, and has better space. However, the ₹2 lakh price gap is making the decision difficult. I intend to keep the car for at least 5 years and don’t want to get bored with the interior.

While you can save a big amount on the Kia Sonet, we feel the Hyundai Venue HX8 is worth the extra spend for you, especially since you intend to keep the car for five years or so.
The Venue's larger touchscreen and more modern interface count for a lot inside, and will keep the car looking fresh inside for quite some time. As you have rightly noted, the Venue also has the edge in terms of space. 
Also, the Hyundai Venue is essentially a newer-gen vehicle and will fetch you more resale value when it's time to sell it in the future.

I am planning to buy new car for my family. I am interested in big, power and safety and within budget range of 9 to 10 lakh. My requirements matches with KIA sonet HTK, Honda Amaze VX and mahindra 3XO. I will using it more for highway ride and trips on hill and beach roads. Need safety and maintenance within budget. Considering you want a powerful engine for mostly highway use, we suggest choosing between the Kia Sonet HTK O Turbo petrol iMT or the Mahindra 3XO REV X M O petrol manual. Both offer strong turbo petrol engines and fit your budget, but each has its strengths and weaknesses.

The Kia Sonet gives you a more premium cabin, a larger boot and an enjoyable driving experience. The only downside is the rear seat, which feels cramped for tall adults.

The Mahindra 3XO offers a bigger car feel at this price with a wide body, generous kneeroom and one of the most comfortable rear benches in the segment. The downside is its small boot, which is among the smallest in the class. If that is not a concern, this is the one to pick.

Hi, I am a regular reader of your page. Your suggestions are excellent. I want to buy a 5-seater diesel car. My running is around 1,500 km per month, and my budget is Rs 12-15 lakh. Is the Tata Nexon diesel AMT a good option?

While the Tata Nexon AMT is a good choice, the Kia Sonet would be a better buy. It has a nicer, well-finished interior, the infotainment and touchscreen interface is a lot better, and the overall quality is nicer.
The diesel engine, too, is more refined, and the torque converter automatic gearbox is smoother than the AMT. You also get more equipment and kit, and Kia's aftersales is better than what Tata offers.
The downsides are space in the rear is not as much as the Nexon, but if that is not a high priority for you, the Kia Sonet diesel is a very strong option worth considering. The HTX variant in particular.

I’m planning to buy a new car with a budget of ₹13.5-14 lakh. I’ve shortlisted the Kia Sonet HTX Petrol Automatic, but with the launch of the new Hyundai Venue, I’m confused. We’re a family of three: my wife, my 10-year-old son, and I. My yearly usage is around 10,000 km, mostly city driving with occasional long drives once every two months. Comparing the features of Sonet HTX, a Venue with similar features seems pricey. Which one should I go for? I prefer an automatic car.

The Hyundai Venue is a newer car in comparison to the Kia Sonet, which is almost two years old now. Even though the Venue is newer and has new features, the powertrain is the same as the Sonet. So, performance-wise, you won't be gaining much with the Venue.
Since your use is primarily in the city, a good automatic gearbox is important, and both the Sonet and Venue get a DCT gearbox that is not the smoothest.
If you are open to trying other options, the Mahindra XUV 3XO is a good alternative, as you get the same feature list but with a smoother torque converter automatic gearbox. The AX5 trim would be in your budget and is worth checking out.

I've been a proud owner of Polo MPI for the last 6 years, now my polo's been gone for Total loss, and I'm looking over three options over here. Skoda Kylaq Prestige AT, since VW Terra is yet to be launched, Mahindra XUV 3XO DIESEL with some bells and whistles (AT not a concern since there is AMT), and Kia Sonet HTK+ diesel + (don't know the cost or Gearbox I'll be getting here). We are a family of four. My daily office commute is 60-70 km. Quarterly 2000 kms to hometown and back. Pls suggest.

If you enjoyed your Volkswagen Polo, you will really like the Skoda Kylaq. It's got the same solid build and sturdy character as the Polo. The Kylaq's turbo-petrol engine is strong and the 6-speed gearbox smooth, and will make everyday drives enjoyable. Do note, rear seat space is decent but not the class best. Also, fuel economy will be significantly lower than the diesel options you have shortlisted.

The Mahindra XUV 3XO offers more passenger space than the Kylaq (but less luggage room), and its diesel engine is well-suited to highway running. We'd avoid the AMT, which can feel jerky. 

The Kia Sonet diesel-manual is a nice option, but it offers the least cabin space.
