Kia India has been working on the second-generation Sonet (internal codename: QY2E), which is due for launch in 2027, our sources have indicated. While a design overhaul and a longer list of features are obvious, we understand that the next-generation Sonet will be underpinned by the same platform as the Syros. The Sonet, Kia's first compact SUV in the country, was introduced in September 2020 and underwent a facelift in January 2024.

K1 base
The next-generation Sonet will move to the newer K1 platform, replacing the current model's K2 base. As seen on the Syros, this platform supports the latest electrical and electronics (E&E) architecture, enabling over-the-air updates and remote diagnostics. Kia may also address the issue of cramped rear seat space in the Sonet with its new generation. For reference, the same issue was observed with the previous-generation Venue, Sonet's badge-engineered twin, but the new Hyundai SUV now benefits from a 20mm longer wheelbase at 2,520mm, offering relatively more knee room and shoulder room.

Sonet hybrid in the works
Speaking of powertrains, the familiar trio of engines is expected to continue - an 83hp 1.2-litre petrol, a 120hp 1-litre turbo-petrol, and a 116hp 1.5-litre diesel - along with their respective transmission choices. We have also learned that Kia is developing a strong hybrid powertrain for the Sonet, although technical details remain under wraps at the moment. However, this hybrid option will not be offered at the new Kia SUV's launch next year, and it's only expected sometime in 2028 or 2029.

Larger screens, Level 2 ADAS expected
On the features front, both the driver's display and touchscreen, which currently measure 10.25 inches each, could be replaced by larger 12.3-inch units. Another upgrade on the cards could be a Syros-like camera and radar-based Level 2 ADAS, as the current car gets a camera-based Level 1 system. Safety may see a boost with the shift to the K1 platform, which uses more ultra-high-strength steel in key areas. Both the K1-based Syros and Venue have scored full five stars in Bharat NCAP crash tests and Kia could aim for the same with the new Sonet; the current SUV has not yet been tested by the Indian car crash testing programme.
A new platform, added features and the introduction of a hybrid setup should make the Sonet a more compelling overall package, and better prepared to take on rivals such as the Tata Nexon, Skoda Kylaq, Maruti Brezza and Mahindra XUV 3XO. Sources also stated that Kia is targeting an annual production volume of around 85,000 units.
