The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport stands tall but the design is now showing its age. There’s no escaping the Mitsubishi’s vintage on the inside, either. Seat comfort is good but the Pajero Sport’s cabin isn’t the widest so sitting three abreast in the middle row can be a bit of a squeeze. The Mitsubishi’s third row is also capable of fitting children only.
Old as the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport might be, its 178hp, 2.5-litre, four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine does still impress. The engine feels strong, effortless and packs plenty of punch. The 4x2’s automatic gearbox is also quick and timely in its shifts, while the 4x4’s manual gearbox is fairly nice to use too.
The Pajero Sport rides with the low-speed lumpiness ladder-chassis SUVs are notorious for but you get a good feeling of control at higher speeds. Unfortunately, the heavy steering calls for multiple turns, lock-to-lock, and this makes the Pajero Sport feel unwieldy in town. The Pajero Sport comes into its own in the rough and feels more agile and lighter on its feet than most rivals.

There are no two ways about it – the Pajero Sport is outclassed by newer rivals in most areas. Mitsubishi’s limited service network is also a concern for buyers. However, if you really want a Pajero Sport, get the 4x2. This variant is capable enough to handle basic off-roading and has the added convenience of an automatic gearbox. The 4x4 is the version to buy only for someone with a genuine need for four-wheel drive.
