Bayon Launch: SUV Choice

Hyundai entered India in 1996 and began production at its Sriperumbudur plant near Chennai in 1998. Since then, the company has grown into one of the country’s largest passenger-car manufacturers, with its Indian operations producing more than 13.5 million vehicles globally, including over 9.6 million sold in India and more than 3.9 million exported to 150 countries.
Today, Hyundai’s India range spans hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs and EVs, from the Grand i10 Nios to the Ioniq 5. The SUV line-up includes the Exter, Venue, Creta and Alcazar, while the Creta Electric and Ioniq 5 cover its EV offerings. Prices range from around Rs 5.60 lakh to over Rs 55 lakh, ex-showroom.
Hyundai offers six airbags and three-point seatbelts with reminders for all seats across its current range. Crash-test ratings, however, differ between models and tests:
Your usage or requirement | Recommended Hyundai car | Why it suits you |
Easy-to-drive hatchback | Hyundai Grand i10 Nios | Small dimensions and light controls make it easy to manoeuvre through congested roads and tight parking spaces. |
Affordable sedan with CNG | Hyundai Aura | The sedan body style, CNG option and usable boot make it a practical choice for family buyers. |
Hatchback for mixed driving | Hyundai i20 | Offers a roomy cabin, 311-litre boot and comfortable interiors for urban commutes as well as longer trips. |
First-time SUV buyer | Hyundai Exter | Higher seating, manageable dimensions and a CNG option make it a versatile entry-level SUV. |
Small SUV with multiple powertrains | Hyundai Venue | Combines easy-to-manage dimensions with more cabin space and petrol and diesel engine choices. |
All-round family SUV | Hyundai Creta | Spacious five-seat accommodation, multiple powertrains and a wide choice of manual and automatic versions broaden its appeal. |
Sedan with stronger performance | Hyundai Verna | Its turbo-petrol engine and DCT option add performance, while the spacious cabin suits longer journeys. |
Larger family needing three rows | Hyundai Alcazar | Six- and seven-seat layouts provide greater flexibility when carrying passengers and luggage. |
Electric SUV | Hyundai Creta Electric | Retains the familiar Creta format while adding an electric powertrain and a claimed range of up to 510km, depending on the battery version. |
Premium electric car | Hyundai Ioniq 5 | Its dedicated EV platform, spacious cabin and fast-charging capability position it as Hyundai's flagship electric model. |

I am currently driving a 10-year-old Hyundai i20 and am planning to upgrade to an SUV. My annual running is relatively low, at around 8,000 to 10,000 km, with approximately 70% city driving and 30% highway driving. My top priority is safety, followed by fuel efficiency. My budget is around Rs 22 lakh on-road, and I am not considering an EV. Given these requirements, which SUVs would you recommend as the best options?
Hi, I am an automotive enthusiast and go for track drive as well. Can you help me out with a suitable car under Rs. 15-17 lakh as I own Ritz diesel that has completed 2.3 lakh km in 10 years without any engine repair or changing timing chain with regular use of full synthetic oil. I do both city and highway driving regularly as my daily run would be 70 km and I do out station travel for work as I stay in Hyderabad and go for trip around Hyderabad to Bengaluru Chennai Pune and Mumbai. I have 3 elders who rarely travel outstation but they sometimes travel within city. My wife and children travel often with me especially for official and personal usage, suggest me a car with good driving dynamics that offers stability abd comfort. Can a 1 liter Skoda vehicle manage driving load or is 1.5 liter better. I don't have an opinion on Kia or Hyundai and I want to know if these brands are reliable and safe. Suggest me a suitable car.
Please suggest a suitable automatic car for monthly running of 2000km which includes 20% city and 80% highway use in and around Shimla Hills. I am looking for a car within a budget of Rs. 9-14 lakh which should be driver friendly, convenient, reliable and comfortable with a 2nd row and ample boot space. I plan to retain it for at least 10-12 years.

I own an Exter and have been driving it for two years. It's a fantastic city car with an average of 16.7 kmpl. The driving experience is great with smooth suspension and quiet operation. The steering is soft and the features are top-notch. Two things could be better: the looks aren't universally liked and it struggles a bit on slopes with the AC on. But for city driving, it's hard to beat.

Great EV in the market. There are many other options, but this one looks amazing. Very stylish and charming. Right now, I can't afford it, but I plan to buy this car in the future with my own money. As a doctor, once I become successful, I will definitely get this fantastic car. Hyundai is a really awesome car company.

Having come from 4 consecutive Hyundai cars, the latest being the new Verna Turbo Petrol.
View all Verna ReviewsHyundai cars generally offer a long list of features, polarising design and a relatively more premium interior compared to rivals.
Each brand has their own strengths, but when it comes to overall fit-and-finish of parts, Hyundai has an upper hand over Tata Motors.
Yes, Hyundai cars are generally reliable and offer a good ownership experience. Regular maintenance and driving habits also play a key role in ensuring a car runs optimally over the years.
Cars such as the Hyundai Creta N Line and i20 N Line come with some exterior tweaks, high-performance powertrains and tuned suspension setups over their standard counterparts.
Hyundai cars can easily be considered by anyone, let alone a first-time car buyer. Hyundai cars generally come with a long lost of features, and multiple powertrain options. Also, over the years, the company has built a huge service network in the country, enhancing the ownership experience of customers.
