The Hyundai Bayon is a crossover SUV that is sold in markets abroad. However, for India, a compact SUV based on the Bayon's underpinnings is in the works. Codenamed the Bc4i, the Bayon will be positioned between the Venue and Creta in the brand’s SUV line-up when it hits the market this festive season.

The Bayon is expected to use the 1.5-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, which will be offered with manual and CVT gearbox options. This is the same engine that does duty on the Creta, but the exact state-of-tune remains to be seen. Notably, this engine will also be offered with a factory-fitted CNG kit, likely with an underbody tank, making the Bayon the first Hyundai model over four metres long to be powered by CNG.

The Bayon is expected to priced between Rs 9 lakh and 14 lakh (ex-showroom) when it goes on sale this festive season, giving Hyundai a two-pronged approach to tackle the midsize SUV market, much like Maruti does with the Victoris and Grand Vitara.

Hyundai Bayon key highlights

  • It’s expected to be powered by 1.5-litre petrol and CNG powertrain options.
  • It will come with twin connected screens and a central dropdown panel housing the physical HVAC controls.
  • Bayon will be the first Hyundai model over four metres long to be powered by CNG.

Hyundai Bayon FAQs

While both SUVs are expected to sit in the midsize SUV segment, the Bayon is likely to focus on a different buyer profile. Hyundai could position it as a more style-focused offering with a naturally aspirated petrol engine and CNG option, while the Creta will continue to offer turbo-petrol, diesel and premium feature combinations.

Yes. The Bayon-based SUV is expected to measure around 4.18 metres in length, making it larger than the sub-4-metre Venue and placing it in the midsize SUV category.

The Bayon's biggest differentiator could be its combination of midsize SUV proportions, Hyundai's feature-rich cabin and the possibility of a factory-fitted CNG option, something not currently available on most SUVs in this segment.

Sources indicate the Bayon-based SUV could be offered with a factory-fitted dual-cylinder CNG option. If launched, it would become Hyundai's first SUV above four metres in length to offer a CNG powertrain.

No. The Bayon is expected to be positioned above the Venue and sold alongside it, giving Hyundai a broader SUV portfolio.

Buyers looking for a new midsize SUV with Hyundai's latest design language, a potentially feature-rich cabin and the possibility of a CNG option may find the Bayon worth considering before making a purchase decision.

I am planning to buy a car but need an opinion between the Bayon and the Elevate.

It is difficult to give a meaningful opinion on the Bayon against the Elevate without actually seeing and driving the India-spec Bayon. The India model is quite different from the European Bayon, and while we now know it will sit between the Venue and Creta, its exact positioning, ride quality, performance and real-world usability can only really be judged once the production car is driven. It is expected to use Hyundai's 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, with CNG also likely to be offered. There is another reason not to rush into the Elevate right now. The Elevate facelift is just around the corner, with the India debut expected in early October. It is expected to get styling and equipment updates, while retaining the existing 1.5-litre petrol engine and CVT. Potential additions include ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera and an updated touchscreen. So this is one of those situations where waiting a little gives you a much clearer picture.

I currently drive a Hyundai i10 CNG, with daily running of around 6 km in Gurgaon city traffic and a monthly highway drive of around 200 km. I am now planning to upgrade my car, with an on-road budget of Rs. 12 lakh for a petrol sub-4-metre SUV, up to Rs. 14 lakh for a petrol midsize SUV, and Rs. 15 lakh for an EV. I live in a rented apartment on the second floor, so I am apprehensive about getting an EV. I prefer an EV, but installing a charger could be complicated due to the sanctioned load. My running could increase to nearly 800 km per month in the future. My key priorities are: - Good suspension and ride comfort, as I have a back problem - Decent fuel efficiency in heavy city traffic - Low to medium maintenance costs - Auto hold and ventilated seats would be good to have I sometimes consider buying a manual, but I mostly prefer an automatic. I am currently considering the Maruti Brezza, Baleno AMT, Fronx AMT/AT, Sonet iMT, Exter AMT, and even the upcoming Inster, VF3, and Bayon. I am open to other suggestions as well. Note: I had a bad driving experience with the Punch AMT, as it caused back fatigue.

Given your priorities of ride comfort, fuel efficiency and low maintenance, the Maruti Brezza automatic is the most sensible upgrade. It offers a comfortable ride, a proven naturally aspirated petrol engine and Maruti's strong service network, which keeps long-term ownership costs in check. The torque converter automatic is smooth in city traffic, and the Brezza's higher seating position will help with your back issues. The Sonet iMT is not the right choice here. While it is a good car, the iMT is not a true automatic and will not offer the same ease of use in Gurgaon traffic. The Baleno AMT and Exter AMT are also not ideal given your back issues and the fact that AMT gearboxes are not as smooth as torque converter automatics in stop-start conditions. On the EV front, your apprehension about charging is valid. Without a straightforward home charging solution, an EV will add unnecessary complexity to your ownership experience. The upcoming Bayon is interesting and if you can wait a few weeks you would have a better picture before making a decision. For now, the Brezza automatic strikes the best balance between comfort, efficiency and hassle-free ownership.

Hyundai has finally confirmed the Bayon for India and it will sit between the Venue and Creta. But with Fronx, Taisor, Sonet, Syros and so many options already around, I'm wondering, what will make people actually pick the Bayon?

•2w

Heard that hyundai is going to launch new compact SUV, Bayon. What is your opinion? Will it be as successful as Creta in Indian market?

•4w

I drive around 6-8 km daily in heavy traffic in Gurgaon, with a monthly running of around 220-400 km. I am looking to upgrade from an i10 CNG. I want an automatic car with Auto Hold, good suspension, and stable handling. Features such as a defogger, cruise control, and ventilated seats would be good to have. My on-road budget is around Rs. 15 lakh. I am considering the Syros EV HTK, Nexon EV Creative 45, MG Windsor Exclusive, and Victoris VXi AT. I am also considering waiting for the upcoming Bayon AT, XL6 AT, Hyundai Inster, and updated Fronx. Kindly suggest which would be the best option for my requirements.

For your usage pattern of 6-8 km daily in heavy Gurgaon traffic and a monthly running of 220-400 km, an EV is the most sensible choice. Your running is too low for a diesel or CNG to make financial sense, and the stop-start nature of your commute is where EVs really shine with their smooth, silent operation and negligible running costs. The Kia Syros EV HTK would be our top recommendation from your shortlist. This Kia car offers a well-rounded package with a comfortable ride, a good feature set and a mature ownership experience. The MG Windsor Exclusive is also worth considering if rear seat space is a priority, but the Syros EV feels like the more complete product overall. The Nexon EV Creative 45 is a good value proposition, but the Syros EV feels like the more polished and premium offering. The Victoris VXI AT is a solid petrol alternative, but given your usage and budget, the EV route makes far more sense. As for the upcoming launches, the Bayon AT and Inster are all interesting options, but none are likely to fundamentally change the equation for your specific usage pattern. The Syros EV HTK is the car that will make you happiest after five years of ownership.
