Hyundai Exter expert review
Based on the Grand i10 Nios platform, the Exter carries strong SUV cues — upright stance, flat bonnet, 185mm ground clearance, and heavy body cladding. Smart detailing like H-pattern LED DRLs and gloss black panels adds flair, but the rear looks bulky and the 15-inch alloys look small. Despite being shorter and narrower than the Tata Punch, its 2,450mm wheelbase helps liberate decent space inside.

Cabin quality is solid with good fit-finish, but the all-black theme feels dull. The front seats lack width and bolstering, though comfort is otherwise good. Rear space is ample for two adults, and while the bench is supportive, three abreast is tight. Practical touches include rear AC vents, thoughtful storage, and a large 391-litre boot, though a 60:40 split is missing.
7
Powered by an 83hp, 1.2L petrol engine, the Exter feels smooth and peppy in city use. The 5-speed manual is light and easy, while the AMT offers smooth shifts at part-throttle and includes paddle shifters for manual control. Performance is adequate, though high revs make the engine sound boomy and progress slows.
7
In real-world testing, the petrol manual returned 9.2kpl in the city and 14.8kpl on the highway. The CNG variant impressed with 22.8km/kg in city and 30.3km/kg on the highway, averaging 26.6km/kg, nearly matching its claimed 27.1km/kg figure.

The Exter’s reworked suspension ensures a comfy ride at low speeds, and it handles rough roads well. At highway speeds, there’s some bobbing on undulations. The steering is light yet gains weight adequately, giving the car a composed, predictable feel overall.
8
True to Hyundai’s style, the Exter is packed with features — six airbags, optional ESP from base trim, an 8-inch touchscreen with connected tech, sunroof, digital cluster, wireless charging, and a dual-lens dashcam. AMT variants uniquely get paddle shifters and sport pedals.
8
The Exter is a user-friendly, well-equipped compact SUV with spacious interiors, a smooth drive, and great value pricing. It may not be sporty or wide enough for three adults in the back, but it nails the essentials. A great pick for those seeking SUV style without the SUV price.
