Hi Autocar Team, I am planning to upgrade from my Hyundai i10 Sportz 1.2 AT and am looking for a new automatic car with a maximum budget of ₹11 lakh (on-road). The car will be used mostly by my parents for city driving. My current shortlist includes: Maruti Suzuki Baleno Alpha AMT Hyundai Exter AMT Honda Amaze CVT Key requirements: Good real-world mileage Easy to drive in city conditions Comfortable and convenient for my parents Preference for top-end variants My annual usage is relatively low, around 6,000–7,000 km, so I am inclined towards petrol but open to diesel if it makes more sense. While the usage will be mostly within the city, the car may occasionally be used for long trips (around 500–800 km) once or twice a year. I am confused between choosing a more comfortable and efficient hatchback, a taller car with better visibility, or a more refined CVT sedan. I am also open to other suggestions slightly outside this shortlist if there are better options within this budget. Could you please advise on the best choice for my requirements?

Mostly city use by your parents, low yearly running, and a hard cap of about Rs 11 lakh on-road points to the Honda Amaze CVT.Why this fits your brief: compared to your 2013 i10 AT or the other AMTs you've shortlisted, the Amaze’s CVT will feel calmer and smoother at low speeds, so stop-go traffic will be less tiring. The cabin is simple, the seats are supportive, and visibility is good, so it is easy to drive and park. Petrol is the right pick for 6,000-7,000 km a year. Two watch-outs: the Amaze sits low, so getting in and out is not as upright as something like the Hyundai Exter. Fuel efficiency also won’t be as good as the Maruti Suzuki Dzire. In our real-world tests, the Amaze managed 13.28 kpl (combined), while the Dzire averaged 15.41 kpl (combined). If that is a concern, the Dzire is a good bet, though the AMT won’t be as smooth as a CVT. If your parents value a higher seat and an easy step-in, pick the Hyundai Exter AMT.Overall, for mostly city use and comfort for your parents, the Amaze CVT lines up best with what you described. The Honda Amaze price starts at Rs 7.51 lakh (ex-showroom).

Hi. Thanks for supporting and guiding. I have budget of 10 lakhs on road price. I am looking to purchase for occasional/weekend city drives only and very limited highway trips. I am also looking to buy automatic car since My wife will also use and she is new to driving and she will prefer that. My preference are Good Mileage, Basic good features, good interiors and exterior look. Will buy week to avail year end discount. I was looking after Exter, punch. Also open to other options. Pls suggest.

You can consider the Hyundai Exter AMT. It comes with one of the smoothest AMTs in the segment, offers a comfortable ride and has precise handling. The Exter feels stable and confident on the highway, while on the highway, it is easy to maneuver in city traffic. It is also well equipped, with a thoughtfully designed cabin that makes excellent use of the available space.

Hi Autocar team, I am an amateur driver looking to buy my first car. I am planning to buy an automatic (AMT) car with a budget of ₹11 lakh in Bangalore. I will be driving this car 85% of the time in bumper-to-bumper city traffic. I am confused between the Toyota Glanza and the Hyundai Exter top variants. My top priorities are ease of driving for a new learner and decent city mileage. I know each car has its strengths, but which one do you think I should choose?

Those are both excellent options, and as you said, each has its strengths. The Hyundai Exter has the advantage of a taller seating position and a more compact overall footprint, both of which should serve you well as an amateur driver. Since that is your main priority, the Exter should be your pick, as mileage too will be good (ARAI rating of 19.2kpl), although not quite as good as the Glanza (ARAI rating of 22.94kpl).The Toyota Glanza has a more premium and spacious interior, and a few more features too, but if that is lower down on your priority list, then stick with the Exter.

My parents (both 62) want to replace their old Spark with a new car. Requirements: automatic transmission, high ground clearance, good mileage, a refined engine, and reliable service. They’ve shortlisted the Tata Exter (4-cyl) and Tata Punch (3-cyl). Their concerns are the Punch’s 3-cylinder engine and service, and the Exter’s lack of body-safety ratings. They prefer a compact, easy-to-handle car (not bulky). Budget is under ₹10 lakh on-road. Any other recommendations?

Verified

As you've mentioned, the Hyundai Exter is the smoother and more refined car of the two, thanks to its four-cylinder petrol engine. Its transmission is also relatively more seamless, and overall, Hyundai cars have a better reputation for their sales and support network too. Other options you could shortlist are the Maruti Fronx or Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor 1.2 petrol AMT.

I am looking to buy a petrol automatic car with a budget of up to ₹8 lakh. I travel about 90 km daily in heavy city traffic (Gurgaon–Noida). Is the Hyundai Exter a good option, or can you suggest a better alternative, as mileage is a priority? I’m not interested in cars as small as the Celerio.

The Hyundai Exter is a good all-rounder and will be a nice upgrade from your existing Maruti Wagon R. However, considering you drive a lot in peak traffic, an automatic would be ideal, so you could consider stretching your budget for the automatic version of the Exter. However, if you want to stick closer to your 8 lakh budget, consider the Renault Kiger 1.0-litre naturally aspirated engine. The automatic version would be only slightly above the 8 lakh mark, but you will get a car that is compact enough for the city, spacious inside, and has a good ride.In both cases, the gearbox will be an automated manual (AMT), so there will not be a significant mileage difference compared to the manual versions.
