The Punch notably features a couple of drive modes, while the Exter gets none. Although not always favourable, idle engine start/stop is available for Punch owners and can help save fuel during extended traffic stops. However, both SUVs come with paddle shifters for their AMT variants, cruise control and dual CNG tanks that do not harshly eat into boot space.

Hyundai Exter vs Tata Punch: Powertrains

The Exter's top trim is solely available with the 1.2-litre petrol engine mated with a 5-speed AMT gearbox. The Punch, however, offers more diversified options in top-end guise, including a 1.2 naturally aspirated petrol,1.2 petrol-CNG and a 1.2 turbo-petrol. A 5-speed AMT gearbox is available on the naturally aspirated petrol and petrol-CNG engines, with the former also offered with a 5-speed manual. Meanwhile, the turbo-petrol is paired to a 6-speed manual transmission only.

Pricing is a win for the Punch, with its top-spec trim starting at about Rs 42,000 cheaper than the Exter. This is because Tata offers a manual gearbox with the naturally aspirated petrol, while the Exter only offers it with a 5-speed AMT.

Even so, the Punch Accomplished+ S petrol-AMT costs just Rs 13,000 more than the equivalent Exter variant, while the turbo-petrol MT configuration commands a Rs 44,000 premium. Not to mention, the Punch Accomplished+ S is sold in CNG-AMT guise too, with the Exter SX(O) Connect offering no equivalent powertrain.

Hyundai Exter vs Tata Punch: Whose top trim should you buy?

Punch offers better value overall

Given its numerous feature advantages, stronger and diverse powertrain offerings and more accessible price point, the Tata Punch facelift beats the Hyundai Exter on paper. The Exter may be more affordable in petrol-AMT guise, but the added features on the Punch justify the premium it demands.

All prices are ex-showroom, India.
