The Tata Tiago is an entry-level hatchback with a 1.2-litre petrol engine, a factory-fitted CNG option and manual or AMT gearboxes. The 2026 update brings revised styling, a more inviting cabin and a longer features list, including a 10.25-inch touchscreen on higher variants. It remains easy to drive in the city, with well-controlled body movements and reassuring highway manners. The three-cylinder petrol engine, however, is not as refined as some rivals.

Tiago Road Test Findings

What we liked

  • The updated cabin feels richer than before, with a lighter colour scheme and more fabric trim across the dashboard, doors and seats.
  • Improved seat cushioning and support make the front seats more comfortable, particularly on longer journeys.
  • The Tiago remains a user-friendly city hatchback. Its light steering helps in traffic, while the suspension keeps body movements under control.
  • The car feels planted at highway speeds, and the steering gains reassuring weight as speed increases.
  • The expanded features list brings useful equipment such as a large touchscreen, wireless smartphone connectivity and a 360-degree camera to this price bracket.

What we did not like

  • The three-cylinder petrol engine sends noticeable vibrations through the cabin at idle and becomes more audible as revs rise.
  • Rear-seat space is adequate for everyday family use, but it is not particularly generous.
  • Rear-seat head restraints and load-cell sensors are missing on the updated model.
  • Some convenience and technology features are reserved for higher variants, so the entry price does not tell the whole story.

Who should buy the Tiago?

Based on our review, the Tiago suits five kinds of buyers.

Buyer type

Why it fits

If you need a city car for everyday use

Light steering, manageable dimensions and a comfortable ride make it easy to live with in traffic.

If you want a more feature-rich small hatchback

Higher variants offer a 10.25-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone connectivity, cruise control and a 360-degree camera.

If you want to keep fuel costs down

The factory-fitted CNG option offers an alternative to petrol, with manual and AMT combinations available on selected variants.

If you regularly drive on highways

The Tiago feels planted at speed, with consistent steering and well-controlled body movements.

If you want an automatic without moving to a larger car

The AMT is available with petrol and CNG powertrains on selected variants, making stop-start traffic less tiring.

The Tiago is less suited to buyers who place a high priority on engine refinement. Its petrol engine is capable enough for everyday driving, but the vibrations and audible three-cylinder thrum are more noticeable than in some rivals.

Tata Tiago price & variants

The Tata Tiago price in India starts at 4.77 lakh for the Smart MT and rises to 8.62 lakh for the Creative CNG AMT, both ex-showroom. The on-road price in Delhi ranges from 5.18 lakh to 9.89 lakh. The range spans six trim levels, with petrol and CNG powertrains and manual or AMT gearbox options, depending on the variant.

Which one to pick:

  • For a tight budget: The Smart is the entry point, but its equipment list is basic. Buyers who want an infotainment touchscreen and more everyday convenience should look higher up the range.
  • For a useful balance of features and price: The Pure+ adds an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, cruise control, a rearview camera, and additional electronic safety aids.
  • For more convenience: The Pure+ A adds features such as automatic climate control and rear AC vents.
  • For the most useful equipment: The Creative adds a 360-degree camera, LED headlamps and a blind-spot view, making it a strong option for buyers who value everyday usability.
  • For a more complete feature list: The Creative+ adds equipment such as wireless charging, connected-car features, and a rear USB Type-C charging port.
  • For lower running costs: Consider a CNG variant. Buyers who prefer an automatic can also choose the CNG-AMT in selected trims.
  • EMIs: Monthly instalments for the Smart MT start at 7,562, subject to the loan amount, interest rate, and tenure.

The Pure+ is worth considering for buyers who want the main comfort and infotainment features without paying for the higher trims. The Creative is a stronger choice for those who specifically want the 360-degree camera and additional convenience equipment.

Exterior Design And Engineering

9.0

The Tiago has always been one of the better-looking hatchbacks in its class, and Tata has given it a meaningful visual refresh without losing the familiarity that existing buyers appreciate. The front end is completely redesigned, featuring sleeker LED headlamps, a slimmer grille and a more sculpted bumper. A new clamshell bonnet lends the hatchback a more substantial appearance, while the redesigned alloy wheels and updated rear styling help modernise the overall look. The changes are subtle enough to retain the Tiago's identity but significant enough to make it feel current alongside newer rivals.

Interior Space And Comfort

8.0

The biggest improvement is inside. The cabin feels noticeably richer than before, thanks to a lighter colour scheme and the extensive use of fabric trim across the dashboard, doors and seats. The materials do a good job of lifting the ambience, giving the Tiago a more premium feel than its price tag might suggest. Front-seat comfort has improved with better cushioning and support, and the addition of a centre armrest makes longer journeys more relaxing. Rear-seat space remains adequate rather than generous, but it continues to serve its purpose well for everyday family use.

Features And Safety

9.0

Tata has used the facelift to significantly strengthen the Tiago's equipment list. The 10.25-inch touchscreen is a welcome addition and is paired with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Features such as wireless charging, connected car technology, cruise control, automatic climate control and a digital instrument display help the Tiago feel far more upmarket than many entry-level hatchbacks. Particularly impressive are the 360-degree camera and blind-spot monitoring system, both of which are rarely seen at this price point. Safety equipment is comprehensive too, with six airbags, ESP, hill-start assist, ABS with EBD and ISOFIX child-seat mounts available.

Performance And Refinement

7.0

Under the bonnet, the Tiago continues with its familiar 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. Performance remains adequate for daily duties, offering enough responsiveness for city driving and occasional highway use. The new 5-speed manual gearbox is a step forward, with cleaner, more positive shifts than before, while the light clutch keeps driving effortless in traffic. The CNG-AMT combination is particularly noteworthy, bringing the convenience of an automatic transmission to buyers prioritising low running costs. Refinement, however, is not the Tiago's strongest suit. The three-cylinder engine still makes its presence felt through vibrations at idle and a noticeable thrum as revs rise.

Mileage / Range And Efficiency

8.0

Economy continues to be one of the Tiago's key strengths, especially in CNG form. While official fuel-efficiency figures are yet to be revealed, the petrol version should comfortably deliver respectable numbers for its class. The standout performer is the CNG-AMT, which returned an impressive 33.33km/kg during Autocar's mixed driving test. That figure reinforces the Tiago's appeal for buyers looking to keep running costs in check without sacrificing everyday usability.

Ride Comfort And Handling

8.0

The Tiago's underlying strengths remain intact. Ride quality strikes a good balance between firmness and comfort, allowing the hatchback to deal with poor roads confidently while still feeling composed at higher speeds. The suspension setup keeps body movements well controlled and the car feels planted on the highway. Steering remains one of the highlights, being light enough for urban manoeuvres while offering reassuring weight as speeds build. Combined with strong braking performance, the Tiago continues to feel more mature and confidence-inspiring than many rivals in the segment.

Value For Money

8.0

Priced from Rs 4.69 lakh to Rs 7.29 lakh for petrol variants and Rs 5.79 lakh to Rs 7.99 lakh for CNG versions, the updated Tiago strengthens its position as one of the most complete hatchbacks in its segment. The refreshed styling, significantly improved cabin, richer feature list and expanded safety package make it feel more aspirational than before, while retaining the practicality and affordability that have always been central to its appeal. Refinement could be better and a few comfort omissions remain, but taken as a whole, the Tiago delivers a compelling blend of value, efficiency and everyday usability.

Tata Tiago Mileage

Tata Motors is yet to announce official mileage figures for the 2026 Tata Tiago. In our experience with the pre-facelift petrol-manual version at Autocar, we saw over 13 kpl in city driving and around 17 kpl on the highway. These are indicative real-world figures from the earlier model, not official ARAI-certified figures for the updated car.

Which powertrain suits your driving?

  • Petrol-manual: A sensible choice for buyers who want a straightforward hatchback for daily commuting and occasional highway trips. Actual fuel economy will depend on traffic, driving style, road conditions, and load.
  • Petrol-AMT: Worth considering for frequent stop-start city driving. The automated manual gearbox removes the need to operate a clutch pedal, although its shifts will not feel identical to those of a conventional automatic.
  • CNG-manual: A practical option for buyers who cover regular distances and want to reduce fuel expenditure. The twin-cylinder layout preserves some luggage space, though the boot is less accommodating than in the petrol version.
  • CNG-AMT: Combines the lower running-cost potential of CNG with the convenience of an automatic. It is particularly relevant to buyers whose daily routes involve heavy traffic.

The right choice depends on the balance between purchase price, daily distance, and convenience. CNG can make sense for high-mileage users, while petrol may be more straightforward for buyers who drive shorter distances or have limited access to CNG stations.

  • Side profile: Look at the redesigned alloy wheels and the textured wheel-arch cladding.
  • Cabin: The revised dashboard, lighter interior treatment, and fabric trim help distinguish the updated model from its predecessor.
  • Infotainment: Higher variants get a 10.25-inch touchscreen, while equipment varies across the range.
  • Boot space: The petrol version has a 242-litre boot. The CNG version uses twin cylinders beneath the boot floor to preserve some luggage capacity.

Tata Tiago FAQs

While its suspension remains slightly firm at city speeds, the Tata Tiago never feels uncomfortable. In fact, the CNG version’s higher-profile tyres make the ride over broken sections even better. The steering is light at city speeds, but weighs up progressively as you pick up pace. In the city, this makes parking and manoeuvring in traffic an easy affair, while out on the highway, it inspires confidence. The Tiago’s strong braking performance is yet another aspect of this hatchback that makes driving it in the city or the highway a non-issue.

The dust resistant light-grey fabric upholstery of the Tata Tiago’s cabin is both practical and well thought out. The use of recycled materials is yet another modern touch, a fact that’s highlighted by embossing on the A-pillar. Apart from the brand’s new two-spoke steering wheel design and a dual free-standing digital displays, the Tiago’s interior also scores a premium-feeling gear lever for the manual version. While the two-tone interior theme elevate the feeling of premiumness, the roofliner is now made up of a conventional woven fabric that looks and feels budget.

Tata has given the phones tray of the Tiago a rubberised design, which prevents devices from slipping as you drive. The presence of physical buttons and rotary controls for the HVAC system enhances practicality. The lack of gloss-black trim on the steering wheel is another plus, preventing smudges and fingerprints from accumulating over time. Higher variants also get wireless charging, a 65W USB Type-C charger and a centre armrest with cupholders. The rear of the Tiago can also be had with a 65W charging port and AC vents for added practicality. For those seeking utmost practicality in everyday scenarios, the petrol version’s 242-litre boot easily accommodates three cabin bags and a couple of soft bags. On the flip side, parts of the free-standing instrument display can be blocked depending on your driving position, and the faint backlighting for the rotary drive selector in the automatic variants is hard to tell at a quick glance.

When Tata updated the Tiago for 2026, it skipped on including headrests and load sensors for the rear seats. There’s also no Harman audio system anymore. What the Tiago does get now is the brad’s new BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) concept that allows users to pair their smartphone directly to the Bluetooth-enabled instrument cluster and two speakers for calls and music streaming.

If you’re someone who wants the convenience of an automatic gearbox with the low running costs of CNG, then the Tata Tiago’s CNG-AMT combo is worth considering. Not only is its real-world performance sufficient for urban commutes, but the AMT’s well-calibrated shift logic makes driving relatively stress-free in the city. One can also use the steering-mounted paddle shifters in case you want to prepare to overtake slower moving traffic on the highway.

Driving Tata tiago xt 2021 from last 5 years. Good car in terms of stability on highways. Better than Swift, wagonr and celerio in this segment. However, pickup and acceleration seems sluggish on highways during overtake.

•4w

Hi, I am planning to buy a car but am confused between the Tata Tiago CNG and the Swift CNG.

Verified
•4w

Between the two, the Tiago iCNG makes more sense if the priority is keeping running costs low. It uses twin CNG cylinders mounted under the boot floor, so unlike the Swift CNG, it does not sacrifice as much usable boot space. It also has a slightly more powerful CNG engine and, importantly, is the only one of the two available with an AMT on CNG.The Swift CNG has the advantage in cabin space and overall refinement. It is 50mm longer in wheelbase and 51mm wider, so there is more room inside, and the 1.2-litre engine is smooth enough for everyday use. However, the Swift CNG is manual only and uses a single CNG cylinder, which takes up more of the boot area. The Tiago is also the more affordable option, with CNG prices starting significantly below the Swift.

I am looking to upgrade from my Tiago and have received compelling offers on two cars. The Mahindra XUV 3XO AX7 Turbo is available for Rs 14.5 lakh on-road, while the Honda City ZX CVT ADAS is priced at Rs 17.5 lakh on-road. For the exchange, Honda is offering around Rs 4 lakh for my Tiago, while Mahindra is offering around Rs 2.6 lakh. Which car should I buy?

Verified
•4w

Go for the Mahindra XUV 3XO AX7 AT at Rs 14.5 lakh on-road. The Honda City ZX CVT is a great car, but at Rs 17.5 lakh on-road, it is a significant step up in price, and the XUV 3XO is simply the better value proposition here. The AX7 AT is a well-equipped variant, and the 3XO is one of the most spacious compact SUVs in the segment, with a wide cabin that makes it a genuinely comfortable five-seater. It also offers strong performance, a good feature set and a solid ownership proposition. The Honda City ZX CVT is the more refined and more premium-feeling car, but the price difference is difficult to justify, especially when the 3XO is already a significant upgrade from your Tiago. As far as the exchange goes, try getting your Tiago evaluated on other used car platforms, such as Spinny instead - you could get a better price than what the Mahindra dealer offered.

Help me choose the right car for my usage. Please be practical and challenge my assumptions. My situation: I am 31 and work as a software developer. I currently work from home in Balsane, Dhule, but I am moving to Mumbai around March. My wife and I are expecting a baby in February. My parents live in a village where local transport is poor. My Mumbai office is near Powai, but parking is difficult. I prefer a manual car. Usage: My current running is around 10,000 km per year, but it may increase. I travel between Mumbai and Balsane, which is around 400 km one way, around 5-7 times a year, along with Dhule/Sakri and local trips. I also drive around Mumbai on weekends. The AC is usually on, and on long trips, the car will have my wife, baby, and luggage. Budget: Rs. 6-9 lakh on-road. I am willing to spend more only if it is genuinely worth it. Shortlist: - Tiago XE Petrol - Punch Pure+/Smart Petrol - Punch Pure+/Smart CNG - Brezza LXi turbo-petrol Please tell me: 1. Which one should I buy and why? 2. Petrol vs CNG for my usage? The CNG premium is around Rs. 1 lakh, and the nearby village pump may open around Diwali, but this is not guaranteed. 3. What real-world mileage can I expect with the AC on? 4. Please consider loan interest, fuel costs, maintenance, depreciation, and resale value. 5. Is the Brezza worth the extra money? 6. Give me one final choice and tell me what I should avoid.

Verified
•5w

The Brezza LXI Turbo is far superior to the Punch and Tiago as far as smoothness, performance, and cabin space are concerned. It is also backed by Maruti's widespread support network, and the ownership experience is likely to be fuss-free. The on-road cost of the Brezza LXI will fall within your Rs 9 lakh budget, and even though you might miss a few features, it still feels worth opting for. Alternatively, you could also consider the Maruti Dzire VXI MT for its large boot, comfy ride and strong fuel efficiency.

I am planning to upgrade from Tiago under a budget of 14 to 15 lakh. I got a quote for the 3XO AX7 automatic around 14.5 lakh. I was earlier looking for Brezza automatic ZXI plus 15 lakh quote. Should I buy 3XO or at least check some other cars? My yearly running is between 8,000-9,000 km which involves both city and highway driving with weekend trips once in two three months.

Verified
•5w

Go for the Mahindra XUV 3XO AX7 automatic at Rs. 14.5 lakh. It is a significant upgrade from the Tiago, offering a much larger cabin, a more powerful turbo petrol engine and a genuinely premium feel for the money. The 3XO is one of the most spacious compact SUVs in the segment, with a wide rear bench that makes it a comfortable five-seater, and the AX7 variant is well-equipped without pushing you beyond your budget. The Brezza ZXi+ at Rs 15 lakh is also a strong option, but the 3XO simply offers more car for the money in terms of performance and overall value. The 3XO's turbo petrol engine will make those occasional weekend trips more enjoyable. The only drawback is that the boot is on the smaller side but unless you regularly travel with a lot of luggage, it should not be a deal-breaker.
