If you often do fast trips with family, the turbo petrol will be a better choice. If that exceeds your budget, then the Fronx turbo manual is a good alternative. Would the non-hybrid Hycross still make sense for my usage pattern, or should I consider other SUVs or MPVs instead? I am open to both body styles, but I am not particularly inclined towards the Maruti Ertiga or Kia Carens since I want this purchase to feel like a genuine upgrade from my current Innova. Maruti is offering substantial discounts on the car, and if you're lucky, it could even fall within your Rs 26 lakh budget. Being a badge-engineered version of the Toyota Innova Hycross, the Invicto is just as spacious, comfortable and efficient, and as a family car that'll be used for long distances, it is certainly one you must consider.The Tata Safari Diesel is another capable, comfortable seven-seater to cover long distances with family. Compared to a Mahindra XUV 7XO, the Tata Sierra is more comfortable for the third row occupants, while still having slightly better boot space, hence it gets our vote.Alternatively, have you considered an electric vehicle? The Mahindra XEV 9S is a great option, and will be very economical to run. Also, unlike the XUV 7XO, which gets a fixed middle row, the XEV 9S has an adjustable (sliding) middle bench to free up space for third row occupants. As far as power, range and charging times go, the XEV 9S is a very capable option. If you can arrange for home charging, this is one car you must seriously consider.

The packaging for a sub-4 metre vehicle is superb, with a second row that slides and a usable third row. When not in use, the third row can be removed for a generous 625-litre boot. It is easy to drive and fairly economical on fuel for long trips.A few catches: with all 7 seats up, the boot is tiny. If you are opting for the AMT, its shifts are slow and sometimes jerky. And while the engine is fine in the city, it will feel strained when pushing for an overtake with 7 people on board. If you are able to wait until the end of the year, Renault has announced that the Triber will get the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol from the Kiger with the optional CVT. This will largely address the last two catches.Alternatively, you could consider the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, but even the base LXi trim will likely cross your Rs 10 lakh budget on-road.

The Tata Nexon feels tough, and its suspension does a great job on broken roads, which you encounter frequently. Performance is decent, but the manual gearbox is not the slickest. The Mahindra XUV 3XO delivers stronger performance, and you'll also appreciate the ride and handling balance. It tackles bad roads comfortably, and as a bonus, it's the roomiest for five passengers in case that's a requirement. However, fuel economy isn't the best. The Maruti Suzuki Brezza also makes for a sensible choice. It delivers a comfortable ride quality even on poor roads, while its naturally aspirated petrol engine delivers consistently good fuel economy. Maruti's hassle-free service is a big point in the Brezza's favour too.
