I own a Grand Vitara full hybrid (2WD) and am planning a road trip from Mumbai to Tawang and back. Given the hilly terrain and road conditions, will the car be capable of handling the journey effectively, considering it does not have a manual gearbox? Please advise.

Your Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara strong hybrid (2WD) is actually well suited for a long road trip from Mumbai to Tawang and back, even though it doesn’t have a manual gearbox.

It’s true that with a manual, you can lock yourself into a specific gear and control engine braking more precisely in the hills. That said, the Grand Vitara’s e-CVT is not a conventional rubber-band type CVT. In the strong hybrid system, the e-CVT works in conjunction with the electric motor, so response at low speeds is immediate and smooth.

On steep inclines, the instant torque delivery from the electric motor helps the car move off cleanly without the lag you sometimes associate with traditional automatics.

Another big advantage in the mountains is the ‘B’ (Brake) mode. This increases regenerative braking, which means the car slows down more effectively on descents while also charging the battery more aggressively. On long downhill stretches, which you will encounter plenty of on the way to Tawang, this reduces the need to constantly ride the brakes and adds a layer of control.

With a combined system output of 116hp and 144Nm from the electric motor available instantly, the Grand Vitara hybrid does not feel underpowered in typical hill driving conditions. As long as you drive sensibly, anticipate overtakes and maintain momentum on climbs, it will manage the terrain without drama.

The only thing to keep in mind is that this is a 2WD SUV. So, while it can comfortably handle broken roads and regular mountain terrain, it’s not meant for hardcore off-roading or very slushy, unpaved sections. Check road conditions closer to your travel date and ensure your tyres are in good condition.

Overall, your Grand Vitara is perfectly capable of handling this trip. Drive with a bit of mechanical sympathy, use ‘B’ mode smartly on descents, and you should be able to enjoy the journey as much as the destination

I want to buy an automatic SUV and have shortlisted a few names: the new Kia Seltos IVT, Honda Elevate CVT, and Grand Vitara Smart Hybrid AT. The confusion is that everyone says that the Honda Elevate CVT engine is good, but is it the right choice to buy the Elevate in today's time? Should I buy the Kia Seltos IVT? Is the Grand Vitara also competitive? Which of these three SUVs is best if I want decent performance, decent mileage, suitability for both traffic and highways, and occasional hill drives? Which automatic NA engine is best when travelling with five people and luggage? Please guide me.

The Kia Seltos IVT is the best pick for your needs. It's got the smoothest engine-gearbox combo, performance is decent both in town and on highways, and fuel economy is also reasonable. What also makes the Seltos easy to recommend is the fact that it's the roomiest of the three SUVs on your shortlist, making it best for 5 people and luggage.
The Honda Elevate is a practical choice, but is essentially let down by average refinement and an inferior CVT gearbox (versus the Kia's CVT). The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Smart Hybrid is an alternative though cabin space is down on rivals, and performance is dull, especially on highway drives.

Hi, I am planning to buy a car for our family, which will be primarily used by my dad and occasionally by me as well. Currently, he drives a Maruti Ciaz diesel. The plan was to go for an SUV with a budget of ₹18-21 lakh. We were thinking of the Hyundai Creta Diesel Automatic or the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Strong Hybrid. Alternatively, we also had the new Kia Seltos and new XUV700 in mind, given their price range. His main priorities are: Smooth driving experience (including smooth suspension) Very good rear seat space (including legroom - as the Ciaz offers very good space) Good luggage space Decent mileage (13-15 km/l in city and 18-20 km/l on highways) Low maintenance and minimal headaches for 5-6 years Considering these, can you guide us on which could be the best option and the specific model we should go for? The expected driving range would be more than 500 km per month.

If you want very good legroom that matches the Honda Ciaz and a smooth driving experience, the Mahindra XUV 7XO 2.2 diesel AT is a good choice. Mahindra has upgraded the rear suspension, and the ride quality and handling have improved significantly.

Rear seat space is excellent, and luggage space is very good, especially with the third row folded down. The trade-off is that the 7XO is a big, heavy SUV. It doesn’t feel as nimble in city traffic and tight parking, and it isn’t very efficient compared to the other options.

If fuel efficiency is a higher priority for you, then the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara strong hybrid (or its mechanically similar cousin, the Victoris hybrid) will give you much better economy. It delivers smooth performance, easy city driving and the efficiency figures you’re aiming for.

The Hyundai Creta diesel AT is also a solid, more efficient choice than the 7XO, with a comfortable ride and easy usability in town traffic.

After the Ciaz, you’ll likely feel most at home in the 7XO because of the space and comfort it offers. But if you prefer better efficiency and a slightly smaller, easier-to-live-with package, the Grand Vitara hybrid or the Creta diesel automatic are both good alternatives within your budget.

I want to buy an SUV with an automatic transmission, and I am unable to choose between the Grand Vitara Zeta and the Seltos. My budget is ₹15-16 lakh. I need only the basic required features and prefer low maintenance. My average usage is about 4,000-5,000 km per year. Please suggest a suitable car.

Considering your priorities are low maintenance, and you don't have a need for high-tech features, then the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara is the better choice for you.

Do note, however, that with the automatic gearbox, the Grand Vitara Zeta costs closer to Rs 18 lakh on road; in your budget, you will have to choose the lower Delta AT variant

The Kia Seltos HTE (O) IVT is available in your budget too, and for that price, you get a larger, more spacious SUV with higher-quality interiors. It evenly matches the Grand Vitara Delta AT on basic features, though each has a few advantages over the other.

And while the Seltos is smoother and more powerful, the Grand Vitara has much better mileage. Overall, considering what you are looking for, the Maruti seems like the better pick.

Hi Team, I am looking for a mid-size SUV under Rs 20 lakhs with a diesel option. My usage will be 80% highway and 20% city. I was looking at the Seltos diesel version. Kindly suggest how to proceed further.

The new Kia Seltos diesel is a strong all-around package and a good fit for your requirements. The 1.5-litre diesel engine is refined, offers decent performance, and is pleasant to drive. The Seltos is also spacious, comfortable and well-equipped. Within your budget, you can opt for the HTK variant if you are looking at the automatic, or the HTK (O) if you prefer a manual transmission. Given that around 80% of your driving will be on the highway, it is highly unlikely that you will face any DPF-related issues.
Another diesel option worth considering is the new Tata Sierra. Compared to the Seltos, the Sierra is even more spacious, and its wider cabin makes it a very comfortable five-seater. It also scores slightly higher on comfort thanks to its plush ride quality. However, the Sierra is priced on the higher side, so variants comparable in price to the Seltos are not as well equipped, and its diesel engine is not as refined.
One factor to note is that with stricter emission norms, diesel engines are no longer as fuel-efficient as they once were. If fuel efficiency is your absolute top priority, you should also consider strong hybrid powertrains such as the Maruti Suzuki Victoris, Grand Vitara, or Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, all of which can return over 20 kpl in both city and highway driving.
The upcoming Renault Duster is also expected to get a strong hybrid powertrain around Diwali, so that could be another option if you are willing to wait.

My monthly running is between 2500 and 3500 km. I am currently using a diesel car and prefer to keep it till the warranty. After that, should I buy a diesel or a hybrid for 1000km highway, rest city?

You are right - with such high usage per month, your choice is between a diesel and a hybrid; a petrol car's running costs would be too high. Without knowing your budget, it's hard to say which segment you are looking at. But overall, while a diesel is a good option, since your usage is more in the city than on the highway, a good, strong hybrid makes more sense.
For the majority of your use in the city, the car will likely run on electric power alone, with the engine only stepping in to recharge the battery. And on the highway, you have a good mix of engine power, e-power, and regeneration.
Cars like the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Maruti Suzuki Victoris or Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara are good options in the Rs 18-25 lakh range, but if you can spend Rs 30 lakh plus, consider the Toyota Innova HyCross, which has the added bonus of more space.
If your budget is closer to Rs 50 lakh, there is the excellent Toyota Camry Hybrid, and if it is higher still, you can explore the Lexus range of luxury hybrids.

I am looking for an SUV with an automatic transmission, preferably a hybrid (if not, then petrol), large legroom, good boot space, all-around sensors or a 360-degree camera, good infotainment, nice interiors, and climate control. Budget is around ₹18 lakh, can stretch to ₹20 lakh. I had Kia and Creta in mind, but I am unsure about the variant. There is also no hybrid option in these. I can wait if a better hybrid is coming out within this year.

Since you are looking for a hybrid SUV around Rs 20 lakh, the Toyota Hyryder, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, or the Victoris would fall into your consideration set and offer you the features you are looking for, like climate control and a good infotainment system.
However, since all three have the hybrid battery placed in the boot, you do lose out a lot on cargo volume, and since this is also a big priority for you, we would suggest you wait for the Renault Duster hybrid, which is coming around Diwali this year.  While its boot will be smaller than the non-hybrid version, it will still be much larger than what the Toyota and Maruti hybrids offer. Since you are willing to wait, this would be a sensible option. Since you said you can wait for about a year, we would think this would be wise.

I want to change my old car. My priorities are safety, mileage, overall maintenance and riding comfort. My budget is 15 lakhs. Should I wait for the Renault Duster Strong Hybrid? Do you have any other suggestions?

The Renault Duster strong hybrid is expected only around Diwali, so it’s still about 7-8 months away. Prices aren’t out yet, but when it arrives, it’s likely to be more expensive than the regular Duster, and most indications suggest its top variants will sit well above your Rs 15 lakh budget. So if you need a car now, it’s probably better to look at existing options rather than wait.
A good choice around your budget is the Maruti Suzuki Victoris VXi Automatic. It is priced at about Rs 15.8 lakh on the road. Since Maruti is pushing Victoris hard right now, you may be able to negotiate a discount to bring it closer to your Rs 15 lakh target. It has a 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating, Maruti’s reputation for low running and maintenance costs, and decent ride comfort and mileage for daily use, which matches your priorities.
The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder are also good options. These two and the Victoris are very similar underneath. They share the same platform, engines and transmissions, and in their hybrid variants, the strong hybrid system behaves the same in both. The main differences are in styling and feature packaging:
The Grand Vitara leans towards Maruti’s design language and comes from Nexa showrooms, with a slightly sportier feel and often a bit more tech in comparable variants.
The Hyryder has Toyota styling cues, a different interior colour theme and sometimes slightly different equipment levels depending on the variant.

Hello, I am an NRI. We spend 3-4 months in India. I have been using short-term car subscriptions during our stay, and for the last two years, we have rented a Brezza. Now, I am considering buying a recent-model used car. We will use it during our stay for long trips, and at other times, my family will use and maintain it. Can you recommend a reliable model? My budget is ₹10-12 lakh. Thank you.

You could consider getting a pre-owned petrol-automatic midsize SUV, such as the Hyundai Creta, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, or Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. These are sensible and reliable options, and you can find plenty of 2-3 year-old examples that'll fall into your Rs 10-12 lakh budget. You could consider trusted used car platforms such as Spinny, where vehicles are thoroughly inspected and are backed by a warranty, too.

I am confused about my car purchase. I was initially fixed on the Grand Vitara due to its mileage and service network, but recent additions to the market like the Seltos and Duster have made me reconsider. Mileage is my main priority, but better features would be a bonus. I mainly travel 300-400 km per month. My current Tata Altroz delivers low mileage.

If you are already fixed on the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara but want more features, then we would suggest going for the Maruti Suzuki Victoris. It is basically the same car and gets the same super-efficient hybrid powertrain as the Vitara, but more importantly, it comes loaded with extra features, such as a bigger touchscreen infotainment system, a powered tailgate, and Level 2 ADAS as well. Maruti Suzuki has also improved the interior quality, and the good thing is that the pricing is almost the same, which makes the Victoris a great value.
Considering your running is not that high, at under 500 km per month, you can also consider a car with slightly lower mileage, since the overall impact on your fuel bills won’t be significant. It will roughly be in the region of Rs 1500-1800 per month, and if you are okay with that, then you can look at the Tata Sierra Turbo petrol AT as well. The Sierra gives you a big car feel, is loaded with features, and is more spacious and comfortable than the Victoris.
Another car we would suggest is the new Kia Seltos. It is very well priced for the features it offers, feels really premium on the inside, and both the petrol engines are potent and proven powertrains.
We have yet to drive the new Renault Duster, but it does look like a promising product if priced right. It will also be offered with an efficient hybrid powertrain, which is expected to go on sale around Diwali this year. So if you are willing to wait, that is another option worth exploring.
