Grand i10 Nios Road Test Findings
What we liked
- The 1.2-litre engine is refined and easygoing. It delivers sufficient power for city driving.
- Grand i10 Nios is easy to drive. The steering is light, the manual gearbox is friendly and the car is easy to manoeuvre in tight spaces.
- The cabin is practical and well thought out, with good quality for the segment and plenty of storage.
- Higher variants come packed with features such as an 8-inch touchscreen, cruise control and wireless charging.
What we did not like
- It is not exciting to drive, and the engine is not particularly punchy when overtaking on open roads.
- The rear seat is set low, and a third passenger at the back might be squeezed.
- The AMT behaves like a typical AMT, so gearshifts are not as seamless as a proper automatic.
Who Should Buy The Grand i10 Nios?
Who it suits | Why? |
First-time drivers | Its light steering, smooth engine and easy clutch make it easy for a new driver to get used to. |
City commuters who want an automatic | The AMT is offered from the Corporate trim. In our tests, the AMT returned 13.76kpl in the city, slightly better than the manual. |
Small families on a budget | The 260-litre boot can take a large suitcase, while two adults can sit comfortably in the back. Plus, no need to worry about safety as 6 airbags are standard. |
Buyers upgrading from an entry-level hatchback | It offers a more refined engine, a better ride and a roomier, more premium cabin, while staying affordable to maintain. |
Buyers who want a factory-fitted CNG option | The Magna and Sportz are offered with a factory-fitted dual-cylinder CNG kit. As per Hyundai, the dual-cylinder setup frees up more boot space. |
The buyer it suits least is someone who wants a fun car to drive. The engine is refined and has enough power for the city, but it is not particularly punchy when you need to overtake on the open road.

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios price & variants
Hyundai Grand i10 Nios price in India starts at Rs 5.60 lakh for the 1.2 Petrol Era MT and goes up to Rs 8.09 lakh for the 1.2 Petrol Asta AMT (ex-showroom). Meanwhile, Grand i10 Nios on road price in Delhi ranges from Rs 6.08 lakh to Rs 9.51 lakh. You can choose from 15 variants, with petrol or CNG power and a manual or AMT gearbox. EMIs for the 1.2 Petrol Era MT start at Rs 8,849 a month.
Which Grand i10 Nios variant should you buy?
- As per us, the Sportz (O) offers the best value. For a slight premium over the Sportz, it adds 15-inch alloy wheels and push-button start, and it comes with a manual or an AMT.
- Go for the Asta if your budget allows. It adds a wireless phone charger, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, ISOFIX mounts, a dashcam and a rear wiper.
- We would skip the Era, Magna and Corporate. None of them gets a rear camera, and only the Corporate AMT gets stability control.
- The Vibe editions suit buyers who want a sportier look. They get a black interior with red inserts, black alloys, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a dashcam. So, if you want something like this, opt for these editions.
Note: CNG is offered only on the Magna and Sportz, and only with a manual gearbox.

7.0
The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios facelift takes a sensible city hatch and gives it a touch more style without going overboard. The front end gets a larger grille and new LED daytime running lights integrated into a reshaped bumper that add a fresher, more appealing face. The 15-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels get a new design while the rear gains a reprofiled bootlid and updated tail lamps linked by a reflector band, lifting the overall presence.
Under the skin, the architecture remains unchanged, built around a straightforward and durable platform. This underpins a compact hatch that is easy to live with in tight urban settings thanks to light, city-friendly steering and good manoeuvrability.
8.0
Inside, changes are minimal but practical. The analogue instrument cluster replaces the old digital read-out and new lighter upholstery brightens the cabin ambience. The dashboard layout is simple and logical, with a well-placed touchscreen that adds to everyday usability.
Front seats offer decent support for a city car and the driving position feels intuitive. Rear seats are surprisingly roomy for two adults, though a third person across the back is a squeeze. Boot space remains a strong suit with a 260-litre capacity capable of swallowing a large suitcase easily.
8.0
The facelifted Nios now comes only with a 1.2-litre petrol engine that meets newer emission norms and can run on E20 fuel. There’s no diesel or 1.0-litre turbo option anymore. The petrol unit is refined and easy-going, with smooth responses in city traffic.
Power delivery is adequate for daily use but it is not particularly punchy, especially when overtaking on open roads. The engine’s refinement is a highlight for the segment, with minimal harshness in normal driving.
The gearbox line-up includes a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT. The manual is light and friendly, while the AMT adds convenience in stop-go traffic, though peak refinement and responses are typical of AMT behaviour rather than a fully seamless automatic.
8.0
Mileage figures sit comfortably in the expected range for a small petrol hatch. Official figures and real-world use suggest fuel efficiency in the mid to high teens in km per litre for the petrol variants, making it sensible for daily commuting and short highway runs alike. The light engine and gearbox contribute to respectable economy in mixed use without demanding frequent stops at the pump.
7.0
The Grand i10 Nios lives up to its city focus. Suspension absorbs typical urban road irregularities with a compliant ride, while light steering aids easy turns and parking. Fast highway runs are manageable, though steering feel remains light rather than confidence-inspiring, and body motions are most at home at moderate speeds.
7.0
The facelift adds practical feature upgrades such as cruise control and Type-C USB charging. Higher-spec models pack an 8-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, keyless entry, push-button start, auto climate control, wireless charging and rear AC vents.
Safety has been boosted with front and side airbags standard across trims, and top variants also include curtain airbags. Stability control, hill start assist, ISOFIX child-seat mounts and tyre pressure monitoring system help the Nios exceed regulatory safety norms for its class.
7.0
The facelifted Grand i10 Nios slots between entry-level rivals and higher-spec hatchbacks. Its refined engine, practical space, generous features and strong safety kit make it a sensible and well-rounded city car for buyers prioritising everyday usability over outright performance.

Questions you may find useful
Hello, Autocar India Team. I am a first-time car buyer with a budget of Rs 6-12 lakh. I am looking for a petrol automatic hatchback or micro SUV. I am a new driver, so I want something that is easy to drive and fuel-efficient. I have shortlisted the Tata Altroz DCA/AMT, Tata Punch AMT, Tata Tiago AMT, Maruti Suzuki Swift AMT, Maruti Suzuki Baleno AMT, Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor AMT and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios AMT. I am confused between these options. Which one would you recommend for my requirements?
Go for the Maruti Suzuki Baleno AMT. As a first-time buyer, your priorities are ease of driving, fuel efficiency and a stress-free ownership experience, and the Baleno delivers on all three. It is one of the easiest cars to drive in the city thanks to its light controls and smooth AMT, and it is also one of the most fuel-efficient cars in this segment. This Maruti Suzuki car also offers a spacious cabin and a comfortable ride, making it a car you can grow into as your needs evolve. Maruti's service network and low maintenance costs further add to the ownership peace of mind. The Tata Altroz DCA is the better automatic gearbox, but the Baleno's AMT is smooth enough for city driving, and the overall ownership experience is stronger. The Tata Punch and Tiago are good value, but the Baleno feels more premium and spacious. The Swift is fun to drive but not as spacious as the Baleno and costs nearly as much. The Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor is essentially the same car as the Baleno underneath, and if you need the additional ground clearance or prefer its looks, it is a solid choice too. The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios is a strong alternative with a smooth AMT, but the Baleno offers a more spacious cabin.Overall, the Baleno AMT is the most balanced choice for a first-time buyer looking for ease of driving, fuel efficiency and long-term peace of mind.
Hi Autocar India, I'm looking to upgrade my sister's 2021 Maruti Suzuki Alto 800. Her office commute is around 30 km, four days a week, and my budget is limited. I am considering the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Magna Manual. Would it be a good upgrade, or would you recommend a better option in the same price range? My priorities are reliability, comfort, good fuel efficiency, and low running costs.
The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Magna is a sensible upgrade from the Alto 800. It offers a more refined engine, better ride comfort, a more spacious cabin and a generally more premium ownership experience, while still being easy to drive and inexpensive to maintain. For a 30 km daily commute, it strikes a good balance between comfort and efficiency. However, given your priorities of reliability, fuel efficiency and low running costs, the Maruti Suzuki Swift is worth serious consideration. It is more fuel efficient than the Grand i10 Nios, has lower maintenance costs, and Maruti’s service network remains the most extensive in the country. In its VXI guise, you only miss out on rear AC vents compared to the Grand i10, but it is a much nicer car to drive and has better ride comfort and rear seat space. The clutch is light, you get a reversing camera, it is fun to drive and a lot more efficient as well, making it a better choice than the Grand i10.
Hi Autocar team! I’m a first-time driver looking for a small car for my little family. My budget is under Rs 8 lakh. I’ve currently shortlisted the Maruti Suzuki Celerio, Hyundai Exter, and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios. Which of these would be the best choice for me, or is there another car you would suggest?
The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios would be the best choice for your requirements. As a first-time driver, you'll appreciate its smooth four cylinder petrol engine, light steering, excellent visibility and easy driving manners. It also feels more refined than the Celerio and offers a more premium cabin, making it a car you'll be happy to live with for many years. If your budget stretches closer to Rs 8 lakh, the Hyundai Exter is worth considering. It gives you SUV styling, higher ground clearance and a higher seating position, which many first-time drivers find more confidence inspiring. It is also better suited if you regularly encounter bad roads or large speed breakers. The Maruti Suzuki Celerio remains an excellent option if fuel efficiency is your biggest priority. It is inexpensive to own and extremely frugal, but it doesn't feel as premium or as comfortable as the Hyundai pair.
Hi everyone, I am a first-time lady driver looking for a safe, reliable, and easy-to-drive automatic hatchback primarily for heavy city traffic. I am confused between going electric with the Tata Tiago EV (I have a dedicated home charging spot) or choosing a traditional petrol automatic like the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios (AMT) or Maruti Suzuki Swift (AMT). For a complete beginner, does the Tiago EV make practical sense, or is a petrol AMT smoother and easier to live with as a first car? Please let me know which of these handles bumper-to-bumper traffic best, or if there is another model in this price range I should consider.
Go for the Tata Tiago EV. As a first-time driver with a dedicated home charging spot and heavy city traffic, it is the most sensible hatchback car. The Tiago EV is extremely easy to drive, with smooth, linear acceleration and no gear changes to worry about, which makes stop-start traffic far less stressful. It is also quiet, refined and very cheap to run compared to petrol cars. The range is more than adequate for daily city use, and with home charging, you will never have to worry about fuel stations. The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and Maruti Suzuki Swift AMT are both reliable and easy to drive, but their AMT gearboxes can feel jerky at low speeds, especially in bumper-to-bumper traffic. The Tiago EV, by comparison, is seamless and far more relaxing to drive in the city. The only real drawback is that long highway trips require more planning, but for your usage pattern, that is not a major concern. If you are open to a slightly higher budget, the Tata Punch EV is also worth considering as it offers a higher seating position and better visibility, which can be reassuring for a new driver. Overall, the Tiago EV is the best fit for your needs.
Hi, I currently use a Grand i10 Nios and am planning to buy an SUV. My driving is mostly in the city, with occasional highway drives. I am looking for feature-rich interiors, good fuel economy, and decent on-road presence, while power is a secondary priority. My budget is ₹15-18 lakh.
Given your intended use, the Kia Seltos HTK (O) IVT is the one we would pick. It gives you a rich-feeling cabin and good features for the price, the IVT automatic (CVT in Kia terminology) is very smooth in traffic, and its size and styling give you the “bigger car” feel you want after a Grand i10 Nios. It will also return sensible fuel economy in the city if you drive with a light foot, and it stays stable on the highway at normal cruising speeds. It's not the punchiest powertrain, but as you've mentioned, that's not a priority here. If fuel economy matters more than cabin flash, look at the Maruti Victoris ZXi AT. It is not as fancy inside as the Seltos, nor as spacious, but it is very easy to drive in town, uses less fuel in daily use, and has a calm, comfortable ride for family trips.
