Hyundai Grand i10 Nios expert review

The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios facelift takes a sensible city hatch and gives it a touch more style without going overboard. The front end gets a larger grille and new LED daytime running lights integrated into a reshaped bumper that add a fresher, more appealing face. The 15-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels get a new design while the rear gains a reprofiled bootlid and updated tail lamps linked by a reflector band, lifting the overall presence.

Under the skin, the architecture remains unchanged, built around a straightforward and durable platform. This underpins a compact hatch that is easy to live with in tight urban settings thanks to light, city-friendly steering and good manoeuvrability.

Inside, changes are minimal but practical. The analogue instrument cluster replaces the old digital read-out and new lighter upholstery brightens the cabin ambience. The dashboard layout is simple and logical, with a well-placed touchscreen that adds to everyday usability.

Front seats offer decent support for a city car and the driving position feels intuitive. Rear seats are surprisingly roomy for two adults, though a third person across the back is a squeeze. Boot space remains a strong suit with a 260-litre capacity capable of swallowing a large suitcase easily.

The facelifted Nios now comes only with a 1.2-litre petrol engine that meets newer emission norms and can run on E20 fuel. There’s no diesel or 1.0-litre turbo option anymore. The petrol unit is refined and easy-going, with smooth responses in city traffic.

Power delivery is adequate for daily use but it is not particularly punchy, especially when overtaking on open roads. The engine’s refinement is a highlight for the segment, with minimal harshness in normal driving.

The gearbox line-up includes a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT. The manual is light and friendly, while the AMT adds convenience in stop-go traffic, though peak refinement and responses are typical of AMT behaviour rather than a fully seamless automatic.

Mileage figures sit comfortably in the expected range for a small petrol hatch. Official figures and real-world use suggest fuel efficiency in the mid to high teens in km per litre for the petrol variants, making it sensible for daily commuting and short highway runs alike. The light engine and gearbox contribute to respectable economy in mixed use without demanding frequent stops at the pump.

The Grand i10 Nios lives up to its city focus. Suspension absorbs typical urban road irregularities with a compliant ride, while light steering aids easy turns and parking. Fast highway runs are manageable, though steering feel remains light rather than confidence-inspiring, and body motions are most at home at moderate speeds.

The facelift adds practical feature upgrades such as cruise control and Type-C USB charging. Higher-spec models pack an 8-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, keyless entry, push-button start, auto climate control, wireless charging and rear AC vents.

Safety has been boosted with front and side airbags standard across trims, and top variants also include curtain airbags. Stability control, hill start assist, ISOFIX child-seat mounts and tyre pressure monitoring system help the Nios exceed regulatory safety norms for its class.

The facelifted Grand i10 Nios slots between entry-level rivals and higher-spec hatchbacks. Its refined engine, practical space, generous features and strong safety kit make it a sensible and well-rounded city car for buyers prioritising everyday usability over outright performance.
