Hi Autocar India, I'm looking to upgrade my sister's 2021 Maruti Suzuki Alto 800. Her office commute is around 30 km, four days a week, and my budget is limited. I am considering the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Magna Manual. Would it be a good upgrade, or would you recommend a better option in the same price range? My priorities are reliability, comfort, good fuel efficiency, and low running costs.

The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Magna is a sensible upgrade from the Alto 800. It offers a more refined engine, better ride comfort, a more spacious cabin and a generally more premium ownership experience, while still being easy to drive and inexpensive to maintain. For a 30 km daily commute, it strikes a good balance between comfort and efficiency. However, given your priorities of reliability, fuel efficiency and low running costs, the Maruti Suzuki Swift is worth serious consideration. It is more fuel efficient than the Grand i10 Nios, has lower maintenance costs, and Maruti’s service network remains the most extensive in the country. In its VXI guise, you only miss out on rear AC vents compared to the Grand i10, but it is a much nicer car to drive and has better ride comfort and rear seat space. The clutch is light, you get a reversing camera, it is fun to drive and a lot more efficient as well, making it a better choice than the Grand i10.

Hi Autocar team! I’m a first-time driver looking for a small car for my little family. My budget is under Rs 8 lakh. I’ve currently shortlisted the Maruti Suzuki Celerio, Hyundai Exter, and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios. Which of these would be the best choice for me, or is there another car you would suggest?

The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios would be the best choice for your requirements. As a first-time driver, you'll appreciate its smooth four cylinder petrol engine, light steering, excellent visibility and easy driving manners. It also feels more refined than the Celerio and offers a more premium cabin, making it a car you'll be happy to live with for many years. If your budget stretches closer to Rs 8 lakh, the Hyundai Exter is worth considering. It gives you SUV styling, higher ground clearance and a higher seating position, which many first-time drivers find more confidence inspiring. It is also better suited if you regularly encounter bad roads or large speed breakers. The Maruti Suzuki Celerio remains an excellent option if fuel efficiency is your biggest priority. It is inexpensive to own and extremely frugal, but it doesn't feel as premium or as comfortable as the Hyundai pair.

Hi everyone, I am a first-time lady driver looking for a safe, reliable, and easy-to-drive automatic hatchback primarily for heavy city traffic. I am confused between going electric with the Tata Tiago EV (I have a dedicated home charging spot) or choosing a traditional petrol automatic like the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios (AMT) or Maruti Suzuki Swift (AMT). For a complete beginner, does the Tiago EV make practical sense, or is a petrol AMT smoother and easier to live with as a first car? Please let me know which of these handles bumper-to-bumper traffic best, or if there is another model in this price range I should consider.

Go for the Tata Tiago EV. As a first-time driver with a dedicated home charging spot and heavy city traffic, it is the most sensible hatchback car. The Tiago EV is extremely easy to drive, with smooth, linear acceleration and no gear changes to worry about, which makes stop-start traffic far less stressful. It is also quiet, refined and very cheap to run compared to petrol cars. The range is more than adequate for daily city use, and with home charging, you will never have to worry about fuel stations. The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and Maruti Suzuki Swift AMT are both reliable and easy to drive, but their AMT gearboxes can feel jerky at low speeds, especially in bumper-to-bumper traffic. The Tiago EV, by comparison, is seamless and far more relaxing to drive in the city. The only real drawback is that long highway trips require more planning, but for your usage pattern, that is not a major concern. If you are open to a slightly higher budget, the Tata Punch EV is also worth considering as it offers a higher seating position and better visibility, which can be reassuring for a new driver. Overall, the Tiago EV is the best fit for your needs.

Hi, I currently use a Grand i10 Nios and am planning to buy an SUV. My driving is mostly in the city, with occasional highway drives. I am looking for feature-rich interiors, good fuel economy, and decent on-road presence, while power is a secondary priority. My budget is ₹15-18 lakh.

Given your intended use, the Kia Seltos HTK (O) IVT is the one we would pick. It gives you a rich-feeling cabin and good features for the price, the IVT automatic (CVT in Kia terminology) is very smooth in traffic, and its size and styling give you the “bigger car” feel you want after a Grand i10 Nios. It will also return sensible fuel economy in the city if you drive with a light foot, and it stays stable on the highway at normal cruising speeds. It's not the punchiest powertrain, but as you've mentioned, that's not a priority here. If fuel economy matters more than cabin flash, look at the Maruti Victoris ZXi AT. It is not as fancy inside as the Seltos, nor as spacious, but it is very easy to drive in town, uses less fuel in daily use, and has a calm, comfortable ride for family trips.

I have been your regular follower for more than two decades. I’m confused between the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Asta AMT and the Maruti Suzuki Ignis Alpha AGS. This car will primarily be driven by my wife. Please share your views.

Thank you for being our long-time reader and viewer; we really appreciate it!While both cars are a little old now, they’re still very competent at what they do, and each has its own small advantages. The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios offers a better back seat and boot, in case that is your priority. However, if it is not, we would recommend the Maruti Suzuki Ignis for a few reasons. It’s more fuel-efficient, with an ARAI-rated Maruti Ignis mileage of 20.89 kmpl. its slightly taller stance makes ingress and egress easier with great forward visibility. Plus, it’s a bit more compact, which really helps with maneuverability in the city.
