What is the major difference in driving feel between the WagonR 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre engines? The car will be used mostly in the city with an occasional monthly highway trip. I am also considering the Tata Tiago - any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you.

The 1.2-litre K-Series engine in the Maruti Wagon R makes it feel noticeably peppier and relatively more effortless than the 1.0-litre petrol version. Also, being a four-cylinder unit, it is a bit smoother and more refined as well.

Yes, the 1.0 will be a bit more efficient than the 1.2; however, if you like to drive and if it falls within your budget, quite simply go for the 1.2. The Tata Tiago has its strengths, like a good sound system, and better driving manners than a Wagon R; however, in terms of space, user-friendliness, smoothness and overall sales and support, the Maruti car is the one to go for.

I am looking for a CNG automatic gearbox car under ₹10 lakh, 5-seater. Please advice the best car to buy as per my requirements.

There are currently three CNG-automatic models on sale in India, in three different body styles. The Tata Tiago CNG AMT (Rs 7.23 lakh-8.07 lakh, ex-showroom) is a hatchback, the Tata Tigor CNG AMT (Rs 8.19 lakh-8.74 lakh, ex-showroom) is a compact sedan, while the Nissan Magnite CNG AMT (Rs 6.89 lakh-9.70 lakh, ex-showroom) is a compact SUV. All fall within your budget, so choose the one which best suits your needs.

I’m really impressed with the practicality of CNG cars, even though they require compromising on boot space. But why are there no automatic variants in CNG cars? Please correct me if I’m wrong, in case any models are available. Is this because of the power loss in CNG mode?

CNGs cars and SUVs have come a long way in the past few years.

Carmakers like Tata, Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki all offer models with underbody CNG tanks, which means you don't have to compromise on boot space.

As for CNG automatics, there are currently three models for sale in India in three different body styles.

For women of good height, with a budget of ₹3-6 lakh, which car is most suitable for road trips?

Given your requirement for a car for road trips, we recommend looking at the more powerful options within your budget, rather than the more feature-packed ones.

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis is a good fit for your needs. It has a nice 1.2-litre engine, and Maruti's easy-to-access service network also counts for a lot when venturing out of city limits.

Citroen C3 is the best-to-drive car within your budget, but the service network is small.

Tata Tiago and Tata Punch are also options to consider. They feel tough, and this adds greatly to confidence on a road trip.

I want to buy the Celerio LXi instead of the Alto K10 VXi. Is it a better option? Which car is more stable on the highway? How about body roll and NVH levels in both?

The Maruti Suzuki Celerio is a larger and heavier car, and correspondingly feels more confident on the highway than a Maruti Suzuki Alto K10. The Celerio will have a slight advantage in NVH, too, and will feel more stable during cornering. Both are city cars, though, and not ideal for highway drives.

Within the same budget, you could also consider the Tata Tiago in XE trim, which feels tougher in its build and drives with more heft than the Maruti Suzuki options.

My monthly running is around 1,200 km, including two highway trips of about 300 km each. I’m looking for an automatic car within a budget of ₹8 lakh and have shortlisted the Tata Tiago XZA. Please suggest if it’s a good choice.

While the Tata Tiago is a good option, the  Punch is the better choice when it comes to space and equipment. It offers more space, better equipment, and a 5-star safety rating in BNCAP crash tests. It’s also more stable on highways and delivers a more confident driving experience.
The Adventure S variant fits within your budget and provides a stronger overall package.

I’m looking for an automatic car in the ₹10-12 lakh range - I drive approximately 1,000 km and want reliable, low-maintenance options. Please suggest suitable models. Also, explain the types of automatic transmissions available (and their order of technological advancement), and tell me whether automatic cars with factory-fitted CNG are available and which models to consider.

Tata offers the Tiago and Tigor with a CNG and automatic combination. Both cars fit well within your budget and are convenient, pocket-friendly options.

The only downside is their automated manual transmissions (AMT), they tend to feel a bit slow and aren’t as smooth as conventional automatics.

I’m planning to buy my first car with a monthly running of around 1,500 km. I want something with good fuel average and an automatic transmission. I’m considering the Tata Tigor CNG AMT - should I go for it?

The Tata Tiago CNG AMT is a good choice for city driving. It has a frugal powertrain that claims 28.06km/kg, and in our preliminary testing, the efficiency we achieved was close to this. It also has a decent amount of practicality thanks to the dual-cylinder setup that opens up boot space.

I want to buy a CNG automatic car. Please suggest available options.

Currently, there are only three CNG-automatic cars on sale: the Tata Tiago, Tata Tigor, and Nissan Magnite. The Tata cars offer usable boot space since their CNG tanks are placed under the floor, while the Magnite’s tank eats into the boot space.
However, the Magnite is larger and has a more spacious cabin. In terms of pricing, the Tiago is the most affordable, while the Magnite is the costliest.

I’m planning to buy an automatic car for my wife. She currently drives a manual car, but I want her to switch to an automatic. My budget allows options like the Tiago, Punch, or Exter. Please advise on the best choice. Thanks.

Of the three, we would recommend the Hyundai Exter, as it has a slightly smoother engine and gearbox combination than what the Tata Punch and Tiago offer, which will be helpful in the transition from manual to automatic for your wife.
