I am looking to buy a 7-seater SUV with an automatic transmission within a budget of 20 lakh. I do not need fancy features, but cruise control is essential. My annual driving is around 5,000-6,000 km. Please suggest suitable options.

The Mahindra XUV700 is a good option to consider. It is spacious, comfortable, and comes with a 7-seater configuration and will fit within your budget. The XUV700 also comes with a long list of features, including cruise control, which is part of the standard equipment.

However, if you can, we would recommend waiting a bit as an updated version - called the XUV 7XO - will be launching early this month. You then benefit from having the newer car and all the updates it would bring. However, bear in mind the price may go up a bit.

I purchased a Hyundai Grand i10 petrol in 2015. I am now planning to upgrade to a 7-seater vehicle. My usage is 90% highway and 105 city. Since I travel to my farmland frequently, my priorities are safety, comfort, and performance. I am not interested in the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga or XL6 due to safety concerns and outdated looks, and I am also not interested in the Kia Carens.

We suggest waiting for the Mahindra XUV 7XO, which is the updated XUV700, and bookings are now open. It is expected to get more features and design tweaks to keep it feeling fresh. This Mahindra car will remain spacious and comfortable with strong engines. The 2.0 litre turbo petrol is smooth and punchy, and the 2.2 litre diesel is tractable with strong performance.
The current Mahindra XUV700 already offers features like a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree camera, a Sony sound system, and the new 7XO will be even better equipped.

I recently bought an XUV700 AX7 Ebony Edition diesel automatic for my family because it offers great value for money and has a tech-oriented, spacious interior. I already own a Fortuner, Thar, and Harrier. Did I make a good decision by buying the XUV700? I chose it because it is fun to drive and has unbeatable power. Was it a good decision?

The Mahindra XUV700 is a good choice. It is a well-rounded SUV that offers a spacious and comfortable cabin, and the diesel engine is punchy and fun to drive. The XUV700 is also feature-loaded and gets a long list of equipment, and the tech on offer is quite impressive.
The only bit to consider is that a facelift is right around the corner, and you might feel shortchanged. However, the car will likely be pricier, and since it isn’t an all-new generation, the current XUV700 remains a very well-rounded option.

I am planning to upgrade from an XUV700 to a Jeep Compass. Will it truly be an upgrade, and does it make sense? Is it worth it?

Moving to a Jeep Compass from an Mahindra XUV 700 will definitely not be an upgrade. The XUV 700 is more powerful, better equipped, a lot more spacious and practical and nicer to drive.

The only area where the Compass has an advantage is while off-roading where the suspension performs well and the dimensions help traverse tough terrain. Apart from that one plus point, you will not find the Compass as an upgrade to the XUV 700.

Dear Autocar Team, I am confused about selecting a 7-seater. I am 54 years 54-year-old male and am 5'8". I own a Dzire (diesel), which is close to 11 years old. Now I feel it is a good time to go for a little bigger car within 25 lakhs. I have tested the Mahindra XUV700 diesel AT and liked the driving experience. Now the local dealerships are saying that they are out of stock. Now what should I do, wait for the facelift or go for the Invicto hybrid (the HyCross is out of budget for me)? Please advise.

The Mahindra XUV700 is due for an update, and the model (XUV 7XO as it will be called) goes on sale in January 2026. We'd recommend you wait for it, especially since you liked the driving experience.
The Maruti Suzuki Invicto is a very different kind of vehicle that prioritises passenger comfort and fuel economy. The Invicto has the far nicer third row and makes for a more sensible pick if you will be travelling often with all seats in use. Also, while the Invicto isn't quite as nice to drive as the XUV700, the hybrid system does deliver amazing fuel economy numbers for a vehicle of this size.
Your pick essentially boils down to which aspects you give more weightage to.

I currently own a 2020 Kia Seltos petrol manual and want to upgrade to a larger car (over 4.5 m) with good driving dynamics and a comfortable ride. I prefer petrol only (not an EV) due to limited charging access. My budget is ₹35 lakh. Please suggest suitable options.

A logical option for you is the all-new Seltos, which goes on sale in January 2026.

The new Kia Seltos is much bigger than the outgoing model, offering more legroom and luggage space than your current Seltos. However, if you want a change from the Seltos, you could also consider the Mahindra XUV 7X0, which is a facelift of the Mahindra XUV700 and is a large, spacious SUV with a choice of strong petrol and diesel engines. The diesel 7X0 would be our pick

I am very happy with my Ertiga diesel and want to buy a new diesel car within a budget of ₹15-18 lakh. Which is the best option among Kia, XUV700, or Safari? I need the car for city as well as urban travel.

By Kia, we assume you mean the Kia Carens Clavis, and this is the car we would recommend for you. Since your travel is in the city and urban environments, this Kia car feels the easiest to maneuver of the three. Moreover, with your budget, you will get a better-equipped Clavis than a Tata Safari or Mahindra XUV700.

Whether to buy the Tata Safari or XUV700 for a daily 30km ride in busy streets and twice-a-year tours to a neighbouring state of around 1,200km?

The Tata Safari will do well on the highway trips, and it has a better third row, so if this is important for you, go with it. However, the XUV700 is the better all-rounder, and the diesel engine is far more refined and delivers excellent performance. In the city, it will feel lighter on its feet too.
Moreover, the Mahindra XUV700 is due for an update, and this will be released next month. Thus, if you can, we would recommend you wait until that version has launched.

I want to buy a car for my father and am confused between the Toyota Innova Hycross GX(O) and the Mahindra XUV700. Mahindra may launch the facelift in January 2026, while there is no update on a Hycross facelift. I’m unsure whether to wait until January or go ahead with the current Hycross.

The Mahindra XUV700, now to be called the Mahindra XUV 7XO, is launching on 5th January. So if you’re not in a hurry, it’s better to wait and check it out before deciding.
It is expected to get new features and an exterior look. The Toyota Innova Hycross update is still some time away, so if you are not in a hurry, in our opinion, you should wait for XUV 7XO.

I’m looking for a spacious, feature-loaded 7-seater for a family of six adults. My annual usage is about 10,000 km with a 40:60 city - interstate split. I’m choosing between the Mahindra XUV700 AXL and the Toyota Innova HyCross GX(O). I prefer to keep my vehicles for many years. Which would you recommend?

Both the Mahindra XUV700 AX7L and the Toyota Innova Hycross GX(O) are good SUVs, but quite different in character.

The AXL variant of XUV700 is feature-rich and a performance-oriented SUV with strong petrol and diesel engines.
The Innova Hycross GX(O) is the top-of-the-line non-hybrid or petrol-only variant, which is a practical and reliable option but lacks the tech and the wow-factor of the XUV700.
Both SUVs are spacious, but the Hycross is also more comfortable than the XUV700 with a smoother ride and more room in all three rows.
However, we feel for your annual running of only 10k a year, which is mainly on the highway, the diesel XUV AXL will be the best option as it offers strong performance, effortless cruising and despite being a diesel is quite refined. Plus, the AXL comes with ADAS features, which can be a lifesaver in high-speed situations on the highway.
You should wait for the Mahindra XUV 7X0, which is the updated XUV700 with extra features like a third screen front passenger, to be launched in early January 2026, before making your decision.
