  • The diesel engine lacks punch

Exterior Design And Engineering

7

The second-generation Seltos moves from the K2 platform to Kia’s new K3 platform, bringing in new tech and allowing the SUV to grow substantially. Powertrains, however, carry forward from the previous car. Length has increased by 95mm to 4,460mm, making it the longest in its class, while the wheelbase is up by 80mm to 2,690mm, second only to the Tata Sierra in the segment.
The new design is bold and introduces fresh Kia design traits, though it may not appeal to everyone. The increased size helps balance strong elements like the vertical DRLs that wrap onto the bonnet and fenders. The square-set headlights sit within a large gloss-black grille, which still features the Kia tiger-nose pinch but feels visually lost amid the loud styling.
The side profile gets chunky gloss-black cladding with body-coloured inserts, flush door handles, and 18-inch alloy wheels on GT Line variants with a geometric design and neon-painted brake calipers. The pinched glasshouse flows into the tailgate, creating a floating roof effect, while roof rails are purely decorative.
At the rear, the design is cleaner, with large vertical LED tail-lamps connected by a light strip. The tailgate has a wraparound look, and the spoiler neatly integrates the stop lamp and hides the rear wiper.

Features And Safety

8

The cabin is new but retains familiar Kia elements, which is good. Fit and finish are very good, and while more soft-touch materials would have been welcome, high-quality plastics and texturing prevent the interior from feeling plasticky.
A single glass panel houses a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 5.0-inch HVAC touchscreen, though the latter is partly obscured by the steering wheel. Thankfully, there are physical buttons and toggles for key functions. The touchscreen is slick, the 360-degree camera feed is sharp, and the instrument display is clear.
The new chunky steering wheel has well-placed controls, including buttons for drive and traction modes. Features include a Bose sound system, panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, ambient lighting, front cooled seats, and a powered driver’s seat with memory for seat and ORVM positions, including an adjustable entry-exit function. Missing features include an air purifier and rear cooled seats.
Safety equipment includes six airbags, ESC, downhill brake control, and a full ADAS suite. Lane-departure correction feels natural, though lane centring can feel intrusive on poorly marked roads. Crash-test ratings are yet to be announced.

Interior Space And Comfort

7

Front seats are comfortable, but larger occupants may find them snug. The headrests are well designed for safety but lack side padding for those resting their heads.
Rear-seat legroom has improved significantly and will suit six-footers, while headroom is adequate. Three average-sized adults can sit abreast, and the seatback angle is adjustable. The seat base is comfortable but short for taller passengers, and lumbar support feels excessive. Rear AC vents and well-designed sun blinds help cooling.
Storage is good overall, though the glovebox is small. Boot space is a generous 447 litres with a flat floor and a full-sized spare underneath.

Performance And Refinement

8

Engine options remain unchanged: a 115hp 1.5 NA petrol, a 160hp 1.5 TGDi petrol, and a 115hp 1.5 diesel, with the same gearbox choices as before. We sampled the automatic versions of the TGDi petrol and diesel.
The diesel remains refined, with muted noise and linear power delivery, making it a relaxed cruiser. However, it feels short on punch, even in Sport mode, and the torque-converter gearbox is slow to respond.
The TGDi petrol delivers strong, linear performance from 2,000rpm to the 6,200rpm redline. Refinement is good, and the dual-clutch gearbox is quick, though it can hesitate at low speeds.

Mileage / Range And Efficiency

8

Official figures are pending, but efficiency should be similar to before. Expect high single digits in city driving and 13–14kpl on highways for the TGDi, while the diesel should deliver 16–17kpl on highways and low double digits in the city.

Ride Comfort And Handling

8

While the suspension hardware is unchanged, the tuning is now comfort-focused. Bumps are absorbed well without harshness, yet body control remains tidy. High-speed stability is strong, and the car feels composed on uneven surfaces.
Steering weight varies with drive modes but lacks natural feel, especially in Sport mode. Brakes are progressive and confidence-inspiring.

Value For Money

8

The new Seltos isn’t a revolution and has some negatives like it lacks some features and the diesel feels underpowered. However, while not a revolution, it feels like a nice evolution of what was an already good car. It offers bold styling, more space, improved ride comfort, and a wide choice of powertrains. With sensible pricing, it should continue to attract strong interest.

Kia Seltos FAQs

The Seltos continues to be among the strongest all-rounders in the midsize SUV segment. It offers a wide choice of petrol and diesel engines, a comfortable ride, a feature-rich cabin and good practicality. While it misses a few features offered by some rivals and the diesel isn't particularly quick, it remains a well-rounded family SUV.

For most buyers whose driving is mostly within the city, the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, especially with the CVT, is a good choice. For those looking to do occasional highway runs, along with a spirited driving experience, the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with the DCT is the one to go for. The 1.5-litre diesel, with the automatic gearbox, is for customers who have high monthly usage.

The Seltos’ ride quality is comfortable as its suspension is tuned towards comfort, so it handles rough roads really well. Body control is well maintained, even at high speeds. Stability at high speeds is also good, and it maintains composure even on less-than-perfect surfaces.

Seltos' new K3 platform has enabled a longer wheelbase, leading to a spacious back seat experience. The cabin is also decent, and three average-sized adults can sit with their shoulders touching but not overlapping. You can adjust the seatback angle, and the seatbase padding is comfortable, but taller folks will find the seatbase short. Lower back lumbar support also feels a bit excessive.

The Seltos is well equipped with features, but it missed out on a powered tailgate, which the Maruti Victoris, Renault Duster, Tata Sierra and Curvv offer. It also skips on a passenger display, which is offered on the Tata Sierra

Yes. The Seltos has a comfort-oriented suspension setup that absorbs broken roads well without feeling unsettled at highway speeds. Supportive seats, improved rear-seat space and a refined cabin also make it a comfortable SUV for long journeys.

In Autocar India's tests, the Seltos diesel manual returned 17.2kpl, while the diesel automatic delivered 15.35kpl.

For most buyers, the HTX variant offers the best balance of features and price. It includes premium equipment such as a large touchscreen, connected car technology, Bose audio system, ventilated front seats and automatic climate control, while avoiding the higher price of the GT Line variants.

Hi, I am a first-time car buyer and earn around Rs 1 lakh per month. I am planning to buy a car this year and have shortlisted the Maruti Brezza facelift, Hyundai Venue and Kia Seltos. My usage will be roughly 50% in the city and 50% on the highway. Which of these would be the better choice for a first-time buyer? In the Brezza facelift, the 1.5-litre engine costs around Rs 1 lakh more than the 1.0-litre turbo. Would it be worth spending the extra amount on the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine, or is the 1.0-litre turbo a better choice? What are the key differences between these two engines, especially in terms of performance, comfort and ease of driving? My main priorities are comfort and an easy, relaxed driving experience.

Verified
1h

The Maruti Suzuki Brezza 1.5 petrol automatic would be the best fit for you. As a first-time buyer with a 50:50 city-highway usage pattern and comfort and ease of driving as priorities, the Brezza's smooth, predictable power delivery, light controls and comfortable ride make it the easiest car here to live with. The 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine is also the better choice if you want an automatic. At the same time, the 1.0-litre turbo makes sense mainly if you prefer a manual and want stronger mid-range performance. The extra Rs 1 lakh for the 1.5 is worth spending if the automatic is the preference. The new Hyundai Venue is more feature-rich and feels more modern inside, while its 1.0-litre turbo offers stronger performance than the Brezza 1.5. However, its DCT is not as effortless as a torque converter in slow city traffic, so it isn't the first choice if easy driving is the priority. The new Kia Seltos is the most premium and spacious of the three and would be the better choice if the budget comfortably allows it, but it is a significant step up in price and may not be the wisest choice on a Rs 1 lakh monthly income.

My total monthly running is around 2,000 km between Delhi and Gurgaon. I am planning to purchase the Kia Seltos GTX DCT. Should I go ahead with this car, or would it be better to wait for the Seltos and Creta hybrid models, which are expected to launch next year?

Verified
10h

With a monthly running of around 2,000km on a Delhi-Gurgaon commute, your usage is high and largely predictable. The Kia Seltos GTX DCT is a good car, but the turbo-petrol DCT is not the best fit for this kind of usage. DCT gearboxes are at their best in spirited driving and can be less comfortable in heavy traffic, while turbo-petrol engines are not the most efficient option for high-mileage ownership.Given your running, a diesel Seltos would actually be the more sensible choice today. It will prove to be more efficient, well-suited to long commutes and offer a strong ownership proposition. However, since you are already considering waiting, it is worth holding on for the upcoming Seltos and Hyundai New Creta hybrid models expected next year. A strong hybrid will deliver significantly better fuel efficiency in your kind of usage and will be a better long-term ownership proposition than a turbo-petrol DCT.If you need the car immediately, go for the Seltos diesel. If you can wait, the hybrid is the smarter long-term choice.

Currently, I am using a Swift VXi petrol and planning to upgrade. My annual running is around 11,000-13,000 km, 80% of which is in the city, with occasional highway trips. Although I don't consistently drive at triple-digit speeds on highways, I really value good acceleration and overtaking capability in my new car. Driving dynamics are also important to me, and since some of my family members, including myself, are prone to motion sickness, I am okay with less body roll and a slightly stiffer suspension. I have capped my budget at Rs 20 lakh maximum on-road, and an automatic transmission is a must. I will be exchanging my Swift, which is expected to fetch around Rs 2-2.5 lakh here in Kerala. I have shortlisted the VW twins with the 1.0-litre AT as well as the 1.5-litre DSG. I am also considering the Seltos IVT and DCT. The XUV 7XO Diesel AT is another option under consideration. I have ruled out the Duster because the rear-seat experience feels like a step back. I am also getting offers for the Hycross GX petrol through a corporate tie-up with my company. I am completely confused among these options. My family wants a smaller car, but I want something that I can comfortably keep and use for at least 5-7 years.

Verified

Go for the Skoda Kushaq 1.5 TSI DSG. It is the best fit for your requirements. You want strong acceleration and confident overtaking, and the 1.5 TSI delivers exactly that. This Skoda car is a genuinely quick car with a strong mid-range, which makes highway overtakes effortless without needing to push the car hard. The Kushaq also has a well-sorted chassis with controlled body roll and a slightly firmer suspension setup, which helps with motion sickness by reducing the floaty feeling on undulating roads. At the same time, it is not uncomfortable in the city. The Kushaq is also compact enough to be easy to live with in urban conditions, which addresses your family's preference for a smaller car. The Kia Seltos IVT is smooth and easy to drive, but it does not offer the same level of performance or driving engagement. The Seltos DCT is quick, but the gearbox can feel a bit jerky in stop-start traffic. The Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel is a strong product, but it is a much larger car and does not align with your family's preference for a smaller vehicle. The Toyota Innova HyCross GX is a great family car, but it is not the right fit for your usage pattern and driving preferences. The Kushaq 1.5 TSI DSG strikes the right balance between performance, dynamics, size and long-term usability. It is a car you will enjoy driving for the next 5-7 years.

Hello I am a Doctor currently drive around in an 2018 Honda Jazz, I am very happy with it but it's time now to get a new car and budget around Rs. 16-18 lakhs, I need a car which easily seats 5 and with a good trunk for outstation travels each month, my monthly run is around 200km tops when in city and a highway run every 2-3 months is around 300kms, I live in Mumbai so you guys know the usual problems, so need a advice as I am scared for e20 and e20+ fuel changes and am scared about EV resale prices, currently short listed the Kia Seltos (prefer petrol or CNG (if any chance in near future))as the most favourite and need some advise for other cars. Would a diesel make sense when I don't drive every day?

Verified
1d

Based on your usage, a diesel car does not make sense. Your monthly running is low, and your highway trips are infrequent, so you will not recover the higher upfront cost of a diesel. A Petrol car is the right choice here. The Kia Seltos is a good option, but at your budget you will be looking at the lower variants, so you might have to skip a few features. On E20, do not worry. Modern petrol engines are engineered to handle E20 fuel and are engineered to take on higher blends too (upto a certain level). On CNG, there is no factory CNG option on this Kia car, but given your low running, a CNG car does not make financial sense anyway. In case you're looking to get an electric car, and you can arrange for home charging, consider the Kia Syros EV or MG Windsor Pro. Both are spacious five-seater EVs which should serve your needs.

I currently use a Skoda Slavia Ambition 1.0 automatic since last 4 years. Now, I am thinking of switching the car but I am confused between Honda Elevate V CVT petrol and Kia Seltos HTK iVT petrol.

Verified
1d

Given that you are coming from a Skoda Slavia 1.0 TSI automatic, the Kia Seltos HTK IVT petrol is the more natural upgrade. The Seltos offers a noticeably larger and more premium cabin, better rear seat space and a more substantial feel overall. The IVT gearbox is smooth and well-suited to city driving, and the car feels like a genuine step up from the Slavia in terms of comfort and overall ownership experience. The Honda Elevate V CVT petrol is a solid and reliable choice, but it does not feel like as much of an upgrade from the Slavia. The cabin is not as spacious or as premium as the Seltos, and the overall ownership experience is more about simplicity and reliability than about feeling like a significant step up.The only caveat with the Seltos HTK is that it is not the most feature-rich variant in the lineup. If you can stretch to a higher variant, the Seltos becomes an even stronger recommendation. If not, it is still the better choice over the Elevate because it offers a more substantial upgrade from your current car.
