We like

  • Ride thatโ€™s comfort oriented without sacrificing handling balance

  • Smooth and strong turbo-petrol engine performance

We don't like

  • Misses some expected features in this segment

  • The diesel engine lacks punch

The second-generation Seltos moves from the K2 platform to Kiaโ€™s new K3 platform, bringing in new tech and allowing the SUV to grow substantially. Powertrains, however, carry forward from the previous car. Length has increased by 95mm to 4,460mm, making it the longest in its class, while the wheelbase is up by 80mm to 2,690mm, second only to the Tata Sierra in the segment.
The new design is bold and introduces fresh Kia design traits, though it may not appeal to everyone. The increased size helps balance strong elements like the vertical DRLs that wrap onto the bonnet and fenders. The square-set headlights sit within a large gloss-black grille, which still features the Kia tiger-nose pinch but feels visually lost amid the loud styling.
The side profile gets chunky gloss-black cladding with body-coloured inserts, flush door handles, and 18-inch alloy wheels on GT Line variants with a geometric design and neon-painted brake calipers. The pinched glasshouse flows into the tailgate, creating a floating roof effect, while roof rails are purely decorative.
At the rear, the design is cleaner, with large vertical LED tail-lamps connected by a light strip. The tailgate has a wraparound look, and the spoiler neatly integrates the stop lamp and hides the rear wiper.

The cabin is new but retains familiar Kia elements, which is good. Fit and finish are very good, and while more soft-touch materials would have been welcome, high-quality plastics and texturing prevent the interior from feeling plasticky.
A single glass panel houses a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 5.0-inch HVAC touchscreen, though the latter is partly obscured by the steering wheel. Thankfully, there are physical buttons and toggles for key functions. The touchscreen is slick, the 360-degree camera feed is sharp, and the instrument display is clear.
The new chunky steering wheel has well-placed controls, including buttons for drive and traction modes. Features include a Bose sound system, panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, ambient lighting, front cooled seats, and a powered driverโ€™s seat with memory for seat and ORVM positions, including an adjustable entry-exit function. Missing features include an air purifier and rear cooled seats.
Safety equipment includes six airbags, ESC, downhill brake control, and a full ADAS suite. Lane-departure correction feels natural, though lane centring can feel intrusive on poorly marked roads. Crash-test ratings are yet to be announced.

Front seats are comfortable, but larger occupants may find them snug. The headrests are well designed for safety but lack side padding for those resting their heads.
Rear-seat legroom has improved significantly and will suit six-footers, while headroom is adequate. Three average-sized adults can sit abreast, and the seatback angle is adjustable. The seat base is comfortable but short for taller passengers, and lumbar support feels excessive. Rear AC vents and well-designed sun blinds help cooling.
Storage is good overall, though the glovebox is small. Boot space is a generous 447 litres with a flat floor and a full-sized spare underneath.

Engine options remain unchanged: a 115hp 1.5 NA petrol, a 160hp 1.5 TGDi petrol, and a 115hp 1.5 diesel, with the same gearbox choices as before. We sampled the automatic versions of the TGDi petrol and diesel.
The diesel remains refined, with muted noise and linear power delivery, making it a relaxed cruiser. However, it feels short on punch, even in Sport mode, and the torque-converter gearbox is slow to respond.
The TGDi petrol delivers strong, linear performance from 2,000rpm to the 6,200rpm redline. Refinement is good, and the dual-clutch gearbox is quick, though it can hesitate at low speeds.

Official figures are pending, but efficiency should be similar to before. Expect high single digits in city driving and 13โ€“14kpl on highways for the TGDi, while the diesel should deliver 16โ€“17kpl on highways and low double digits in the city.

While the suspension hardware is unchanged, the tuning is now comfort-focused. Bumps are absorbed well without harshness, yet body control remains tidy. High-speed stability is strong, and the car feels composed on uneven surfaces.
Steering weight varies with drive modes but lacks natural feel, especially in Sport mode. Brakes are progressive and confidence-inspiring.

The new Seltos isnโ€™t a revolution and has some negatives like it lacks some features and the diesel feels underpowered. However, while not a revolution, it feels like a nice evolution of what was an already good car. It offers bold styling, more space, improved ride comfort, and a wide choice of powertrains. With sensible pricing, it should continue to attract strong interest.

Hyundai and Kia belong to the same parent group and share engines, gearboxes, suspension and electrical architecture, so the Kia Seltos HTK(O) IVT and Hyundai Creta S(O) IVT are fundamentally similar in the way they drive and in long-term reliability.Where they really differ is in design, space and cabin ambience. The new Seltos has a longer wheelbase, is noticeably more spacious, and as youโ€™ve pointed out, feels more premium inside. It also feels a bit more up-to-date in terms of dashboard design and overall cabin experience. Performance from the 1.5 petrol with IVT is effectively the same in both, so you wonโ€™t feel a big difference in outright smoothness or ease of driving. For maintenance and after-sales, Hyundai still has a slight edge with its wider, more established network, which is an advantage if youโ€™re in a smaller town or travel widely. Kiaโ€™s support has improved quickly, though, so in most bigger cities itโ€™s no longer a deal-breaker.On resale, the Seltos currently enjoys strong appeal, and with the next-gen Creta due around 2027, the present Creta will start to feel older sooner, which can soften its resale value earlier. So, if both are similarly priced and you like the Seltos more, I would pick the Seltos HTK(O) IVT. If you can wait, the next-gen Creta is also worth keeping in mind.

I'm planning to buy an automatic car (budget 20L) in Bangalore with a daily running of 25-30kms in peak Bangalore traffic. I'm currently leaning towards Venue HX10 DCT due to its amazing features. Could you please suggest the right car for me? I will be upgrading from Tata Altroz DCA which has given me considerable problems owing to DCT transmission coupled with Tata's service.

While the Hyundai Venue HX10 is tempting for its features and is an excellent car all around, its 1.0 T-GDi engine and 7-Speed DCT are not well suited to stop-and-go traffic, where you will encounter a lot of judder, hesitance and off-boost lag. You may have had a similar issue with your Altroz DCT that might have led to said problems. As such we would recommend a different kind of automatic for your specific application. Consider the Kia Seltos HTX (or if you can stretch your budget slightly, the GTX) but crucially with the 1.5 Petrol CVT powertrain. You'll get most, if not all, of the features you did in the Venue HX10, in a larger, more comfortable SUV. The powertrain will be a lot smoother than the 1.0 turbo DCT in the Venue and should likely give you less trouble in the long run too. It could even prove more fuel efficient than the heavily boosted Venue Turbo as well. Another alternative is the Honda Elevate CVT, which could prove a bit better value for money. But, as it's a slightly older car, you will sacrifice some of the new-age features and the wow factor you'll get in the Kia.

I am planning to buy a mid-size SUV mainly for city use within a budget of โ‚น14โ€“16 lakh in the next 6โ€“7 months. My priorities are long-term ownership (10โ€“15 years), premium interiors, a punchy engine, and good driving performance. I am considering the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Honda Elevate, Skoda Kushaq (1.0 TSI), and the Renault Duster (1.3 MT). Which one would you recommend as the best balance of reliability, driving enjoyment, and interior quality? Also, is it worth waiting for the Creta facelift or any upcoming models?

If it fits in your budget, go for the Kia Seltos, as it meets most of your broad set of requirements. Kias are known to be reliable enough for prolonged usage. The Seltos has a spacious and well-appointed premium interior that looks and feels upmarket. It's also pretty fun to drive, especially if you opt for the 160hp 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine. The new-gen Hyundai Creta is coming in 2027 and might be worth waiting for, but you will get most of what it offers in the Seltos available today. However, as you've pointed out, it might be worth moving a segment lower to get more for your money, in which case we'd recommend the Hyundai Venue. It offers much of what the Seltos offers, including reliability, features and high-quality interior - albeit in a smaller form factor at a more affordable price. If reliability trumps all else, consider a Maruti Suzuki compact SUV like the Brezza or the Fronx.

I am looking to buy a new SUV and have considered options like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Honda Elevate, Skoda Kushaq, Tata Sierra, Tata Harrier, Mahindra XUV 7XO, and the new Renault Duster. I have test-driven all of them and found the Creta to be the most comfortable, though it feels slightly outdated. The Elevate also seems to lack some modern features and feels a bit dated. The Kushaq/Taigun feel slightly small for five occupants, which is a concern. I really enjoyed driving the new Duster, but rear seat comfort seemed to be an issue. This car will be my primary vehicle for weekly Jaipurโ€“Delhi trips and occasional long drives, while city usage will mostly be handled by my secondary car (Volkswagen Polo diesel). Based on this, which SUV should I choose, and which engine option would you recommend?

If you found the Hyundai Creta the most comfortable but too dated, the obvious answer is the new Kia Seltos. It gives you that same relaxed, easy-going ride but is more spacious than the Creta and feels more modern and upmarket inside, which will make your frequent Jaipur-Delhi runs nicer to live with.Given your usage is mainly highway with the Polo handling city duty, we would strongly recommend the 1.5 turbo-petrol Seltos. It has a strong mid-range punch, plenty of torque for effortless overtakes, and cruises very comfortably, which is exactly what you want for long, fast runs. The new Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun and Renault Duster are all very good to drive on the highway and dynamically more engaging, but as youโ€™ve noticed, their rear seats are tighter for three adults across, and thatโ€™s a compromise on long trips with family. Thatโ€™s where the Seltos scores: it strikes the best balance between space, comfort and a properly fresh cabin.
