The Citroen C3 sits several segments below the C5 Aircross but carries the same quirky French charm. The chrome grille flows into LED DRLs, with the headlamps beside it. A hexagonal air dam, faux scuff plate and neat touches like the Citroen logo inside the lamps add character.
Various packs, editions and colours give myriad combinations. Sculpted panels, a cut-out tailgate and upright stance give it a crossover look, while elements like lift-type handles remind you it’s still budget territory. The 180mm ground clearance and SUV-like shape only add to the confusion about its positioning.

Inside, the C3 is unconventional but cleverly executed. Textured dash trim, chunky knobs and funky AC vents add flair. The orange dash is optional, paired with either anodised grey or brushed-metal accents. Plastics feel decent up top, but some cheap bits are visible lower down.
The front seats are slim but generously cushioned, with a tall driving position. The back seat is roomy with good leg- and headroom, though tight for three. There’s no rear armrest or adjustable headrests, but two USB ports are provided. The 315-litre boot is practical, though lifting bags over the tall lip isn’t ideal, and the single-piece rear backrest is awkward to fold.

Two petrol engines are offered — an 82hp NA and a 110hp turbo, the latter getting a 6-speed AT option. The turbo is eager, with a punchy mid-range and slick 6-speed manual, though it strains at high revs. The NA feels adequate for city use, paired with a notchy 5-speed ’box. Both are decently refined, and the AC performs impressively even without rear vents.

Both engines deliver 19.3kpl ARAI mileage with the manual gearbox, with the turbo-auto at 18.3kpl. Expect real-world figures to be lower, especially for the turbo if driven hard.

Ride quality is a highlight. The long wheelbase, wide track and chunky tyres deliver a smooth, absorbent ride over rough roads. High-speed stability is excellent, steering feels direct and handling is tidy, with predictable body roll and no flex or rattles.

The 10-inch touchscreen is a highlight, with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. The digital instrument cluster on higher trims offers a good amount of info. The four-speaker audio system is surprisingly punchy. While the base trim is very bare-bones, higher trims now include auto climate control, rear-view camera and six airbags.

•1wWith four passengers, a fully loaded boot, the AC running, and driving conditions that include broken roads, ghats, and highways, which car performs better, the Citroen C3X Turbo AT or the Skoda Kylaq AT? If possible, please provide a back-to-back comparison review as well.

Both perform very well for your requirements, but overall, the Skoda Kylaq is the better choice. The Citroen C3 X has a slightly comfier ride quality, its AC performance is very strong, and its 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine is quite punchy. However, the Kylaq's 1.0 TSI engine is more powerful, and the 6-speed automatic gearbox has been tuned for even greater responses. As such, it will feel more eager on ghats and highways. It too has excellent suspension and absorbs bumps and broken roads well. Moreover, the Kylaq sits in a segment above and hence offers more space in the back seat and the boot, which will be useful for your passengers and luggage. Moreover, the build quality is stronger, the interior feels more upmarket, and though it may be more expensive, there are more features on offer than in the Citroen. Hence, we recommend that you go with the Skoda.

•1wI currently own a Volkswagen Polo for the past 16 years and am planning to upgrade. My usage is evenly split between city and highway driving, with an annual running of around 10,000 km and a budget of ₹12 lakh. I am confused between the Skoda Kylaq Signature AT, Citroën C3X Turbo AT, and Mahindra XUV 3XO MX2 Pro AT. I am specifically looking for a torque converter automatic. I have test-driven all three. My main concerns with the Kylaq are the limited rear foot space due to the front seat anchors and the AC performance, which felt inadequate for Chennai weather. I liked the C3X the most overall, but I am worried about long-term ownership aspects. I also have concerns about the fuel efficiency of the 3XO.

The Skoda Kylaq will feel like a natural upgrade from your Polo. The build quality and dynamics will seem very familiar to you, being a Polo owner. This would be the best upgrade for you; however, if you're not comfortable with it, you could consider the Citroen C3 X for its excellent ride-handling balance and fantastic turbo-petrol engine. Yes, its service network is limited, so consider it only if there is a Citroen touchpoint close by. The Mahindra 3XO is a heavy car, and as a result, fuel efficiency is likely to be the least of the three, but it is the most rounded in terms of performance, ride comfort and space, hence it gets our vote.

With a Rs 9-12 lakh budget and comfort on rough roads as your main need, the Citroen C3 X Turbo is your best pick. Its well-tuned suspension handles bad patches, speed breakers and broken village roads better than any other car at this price. In daily city use, it takes bumps without tossing you around, so your passengers stay comfortable, and it feels steady at highway speeds, too. It is also easy to see out of and park, which helps if you drive in tight lanes or traffic. The 1.2-litre turbo-petrol is strong, and within your budget, you can even get the top-spec C3 X Shine turbo-petrol AT, which uses a smooth 6-speed torque converter gearbox that's great in town or on the highway.A couple of things to keep in mind: Citroen’s service network is smaller, so check dealer support in your city. And though it got an update recently, the list of features isn't quite as long as what rivals offer. If you are open to another choice with an even softer ride, consider the Tata Punch. Its suspension isn't quite as good as the Citroen's, but still very robust.

There's actually quite a variety of automatic hatchbacks within your budget. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno and its twin, the Toyota Glanza, are well-rounded products. Good ride comfort and excellent fuel economy are highlights, and the AMT gearbox is good enough for average driving. However, gearshifts aren't the smoothest, and you'll feel this over a quick overtaking manoeuvre. If you are open to the Citroen brand, the C3 is a great option. Its 1.2-litre engine and torque converter auto gearbox combo is excellent, and ride comfort is also very good.You could also look at the Tata Altroz DCA in Creative S trim. The dual-clutch auto gearbox is very smooth and well-suited to city use. There's also a toughness to the package that gives great confidence at highway speeds.We are also fans of the smooth and polished Hyundai i20 CVT, but the Sportz(O) that fits your budget isn't an ideal choice as it misses out on the safety of a rear wiper. Finally, if you have the option to install an EV charger at home or office, the Tata Tiago EV is also an option to consider. Being all-electric, it's super smooth and very refined. However, it works best as a city car.

As a first-time buyer, it’s good that you’re looking at both sides carefully.The Citroen C3 is a solid and very likeable car. Its biggest strength is ride comfort, it handles bad roads better than most cars in this segment and feels mature for its size. The 1.2-litre turbo petrol, in particular, is a gem. It’s strong, smooth and easily one of the nicest small-capacity turbo-petrol engines around today. If you enjoy driving and want something that feels a bit different from the usual crowd, the C3 stands out. For your daily run of under 50km and occasional long drives, it will be perfectly comfortable. Mileage is reasonable, especially with the naturally aspirated engine, though the turbo will be slightly lower.The Nissan Magnite has other strengths. It has better road presence with its SUV styling, a more practical cabin, a bigger boot and a feature list that feels more complete. Nissan, as a brand, has built a reputation for reliability, and its dealership and service network is currently more established than Citroen’s in most cities. That adds peace of mind, especially for a first-time buyer.So if you like to drive and value comfort and engine performance, the C3 is the more enjoyable car. But if you want a safer, more practical and lower-risk ownership experience, the Magnite is the wiser choice.

Yes, the Tata Punch turbo is a good choice for you, given the nature of your usage. The advantage is that it can still be easy, and even quite fuel efficient if driven carefully, when driving around town, while also being strong enough for your occasional highway drives or hilly regions. This can not be said of the naturally aspirated engine.Perhaps the only downsides are that the 6-speed manual gearbox can feel notchy, clutch modulation is not easy to do smoothly, and it is not very refined. Also, you will not get the top-spec variant within your Rs 10 lakh budget.Keeping that in mind, you should also consider the Citroen C3 1.2 Turbo. It has a much smoother and punchier engine, and the gearbox is slicker too. It may miss out on some features that the Punch gets, but it is also more affordable overall. Its biggest advantage is that, if you are willing to spend a little more, you can get this engine with a smooth 6-speed automatic gearbox, which will be a huge boon around town.

The Citroen C3 Turbo-AT is an excellent crossover hatchback that's compact in dimensions, packs in strong performance, and it'll easily fall within your budget. But go for it, only if there is a Citroen touchpoint near you. The Nissan Magnite Turbo-CVT/Renault Kiger Turbo-CVT are also good, value-for-money options. And even though both these are slightly larger than the Swift, they are narrower than other turbo-automatic compact SUVs available at this price. It makes them relatively easier to navigate.
