About the Hyundai Stargazer, there is no official India launch confirmation, so we wouldn't advise waiting for it. In fact, the Stargazer shares its K2 platform and 1.5 NA powertrain with the Clavis, so you're not really missing out.One thing to note about the Clavis: while the 1.5 NA is a refined and efficient engine, it may feel underpowered when the vehicle is fully loaded. If you are frequently travelling on highways with a full load, the 1.5 turbo will make overtaking a lot easier. The turbo-petrol also brings with it the option of a DCT, should you want one.If you were eyeing the Citroen Aircross automatic for more space and power, it does give you that and usually still fits within your budget. The Skoda Kylaq will feel like a natural upgrade from your Polo. The build quality and dynamics will seem very familiar to you, being a Polo owner. This would be the best upgrade for you; however, if you're not comfortable with it, you could consider the Citroen C3 X for its excellent ride-handling balance and fantastic turbo-petrol engine. Yes, its service network is limited, so consider it only if there is a Citroen touchpoint close by. The Mahindra 3XO is a heavy car, and as a result, fuel efficiency is likely to be the least of the three, but it is the most rounded in terms of performance, ride comfort and space, hence it gets our vote.

The Kia Carens diesel automatic is the closest match to your brief. It is not an SUV in shape, but it gives you the space, easy access to the third row, and the features you want at this price. Pick the diesel with the automatic gearbox, because that is the one most likely to meet your 15kpl goal in real-world use while still feeling strong enough with a full load. The Carens also offers important safety gear across trims like multiple airbags and stability control, and mid-to-higher trims offer a sunroof, which makes long trips nicer for the second row.Two things to keep in mind for your budget. The exact Carens trim that bundles diesel, automatic and a sunroof may sit a bit above Rs 15 lakh on-road in Pune, so you may need a small stretch of the budget. Also, it feels more like a family car than a tough SUV, so if you want a high, rugged feel, this will not give you that.If the sunroof is not a must and you want to stick closer to Rs 15 lakh, the Maruti Suzuki XL6 automatic 6-seater is the value pick. There's actually quite a variety of automatic hatchbacks within your budget. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno and its twin, the Toyota Glanza, are well-rounded products. Good ride comfort and excellent fuel economy are highlights, and the AMT gearbox is good enough for average driving. However, gearshifts aren't the smoothest, and you'll feel this over a quick overtaking manoeuvre. If you are open to the Citroen brand, the C3 is a great option. Its 1.2-litre engine and torque converter auto gearbox combo is excellent, and ride comfort is also very good.You could also look at the Tata Altroz DCA in Creative S trim. The dual-clutch auto gearbox is very smooth and well-suited to city use. There's also a toughness to the package that gives great confidence at highway speeds.We are also fans of the smooth and polished Hyundai i20 CVT, but the Sportz(O) that fits your budget isn't an ideal choice as it misses out on the safety of a rear wiper. Finally, if you have the option to install an EV charger at home or office, the Tata Tiago EV is also an option to consider. Being all-electric, it's super smooth and very refined. However, it works best as a city car.

If you are looking for something with similar performance to the Citroen Basalt/Aircross, you should consider the Volkswagen Taigun or the Skoda Kushaq with the 1.0 TSI and torque converter automatic. The facelifted Kushaq now gets an 8-speed automatic replacing the old 6-speed unit, and the Taigun will get the same when it is facelifted later this year.The 1.0 TSI makes a healthy 115hp and 178Nm, which delivers better performance than the naturally aspirated engine in the Elevate and is on par with the Basalt. The 6-speed torque converter automatic was also smooth-shifting and very convenient to use, and we expect the 8-speed to be more of the same. With 80 percent of your driving in heavy Bengaluru traffic, this transmission will be a boon.Prices for the facelifted Kushaq will be announced later this month, and we expect our first drive reviews to drop around the same time. Before you decide, take a test drive, of course.
