The Tata Punch offers more of what you need. It's got the widest cabin (though it's still not ideal as a 5-seater) and packs in all the features that you need, and then a whole lot more. The Citroen C3 makes a compelling case for itself with the best engines, well-sorted ride and handling, and the cabin experience is also vastly improved with the recent feature update. However, it's not quite as roomy as the Punch, and Citroen's service network is also not as widespread as Tata or Hyundai's.The Hyundai Exter is an easy-going option that's also worth a look.

There's actually quite a variety of automatic hatchbacks within your budget. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno and its twin, the Toyota Glanza, are well-rounded products. Good ride comfort and excellent fuel economy are highlights, and the AMT gearbox is good enough for average driving. However, gearshifts aren't the smoothest, and you'll feel this over a quick overtaking manoeuvre. If you are open to the Citroen brand, the C3 is a great option. Its 1.2-litre engine and torque converter auto gearbox combo is excellent, and ride comfort is also very good.You could also look at the Tata Altroz DCA in Creative S trim. The dual-clutch auto gearbox is very smooth and well-suited to city use. There's also a toughness to the package that gives great confidence at highway speeds.We are also fans of the smooth and polished Hyundai i20 CVT, but the Sportz(O) that fits your budget isn't an ideal choice as it misses out on the safety of a rear wiper. Finally, if you have the option to install an EV charger at home or office, the Tata Tiago EV is also an option to consider. Being all-electric, it's super smooth and very refined. However, it works best as a city car.

Most of the automatic cars under Rs 10 lakh feature an AMT gearbox, which is cost-effective, but not the best when it comes to smoothness. However, the Citroen C3X with the turbo-engine option is a considerable hatchback that features a torque-converter automatic that is a lot better. The turbo-petrol engine of this Citroen car is excellent when it comes to power delivery and punchy performance, and the ride quality is very good too. Where it loses some points is in Citroen's dealer network, which isn't as widespread as other brands. This small drawback aside, the C3X is a very good option that gets good ground clearance, compact dimensions and good drivability.

Given that the car will be primarily used by your mother, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is an easy hatchback to recommend. Its height makes it easy to get into and out of, visibility is excellent, and it's generally a friendly city car. Good fuel economy is a given, and the AMT gearbox is decent for average city use. Opt for the 1.2 AGS that is well within your budget.If you are open to trying a Citroen, you could also consider the Citroen C3 Turbo AT. While it's just out of your budget, its slick engine and gearbox make it worth a look.

Since you’re not satisfied with the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, replacing it makes sense, but be prepared to take a hit when it comes to resale value. You could try the Maruti Suzuki Fronx Turbo AT, which is more engaging to drive and offers the same peace of mind that comes with the Maruti Suzuki brand.
