EV sales surged 73 percent in April 2026 compared to the same period last year.

India’s electric passenger vehicle industry, which closed FY2026 with record retail sales of 2,00,946 units and a handsome 85 percent year-on-year (YoY) growth, has carried over the same strong momentum into the first month of FY2027. In April 2026, 17 manufacturers of electric SUVs and MPVs delivered 23,163 units to customers, up 73 percent from 13,409 units in the corresponding period last year. This is the second-highest monthly retail sales figure after the 23,749 units in March 2026. Let’s take a closer look at how individual manufacturers fared.

Tata Motors

Sales: 8,506 units

Harrier EV is emerging as a strong seller for Tata Motors.

The longstanding EV market leader posted retail sales of 8,506 units in April 2026, up 77 percent YoY (April 2025: 4,816 units), capturing a 37 percent market share last month, up from 36 percent a year ago. This is Tata Motors’s second-highest monthly EV sales after 8,684 units in March 2026. While the Harrier EV has helped revive demand, the Nexon EV, Tiago EV and Punch EV continue to have their share of buyers. The Curvv EV, however, is yet to achieve proper traction. The company, which retailed a record 79,271 EVs in FY2026, has seen its EV market share drop to 40 percent in FY2026 from 53 percent in FY2025. That’s mainly due to the rapid advance of JSW MG Motor India and Mahindra & Mahindra, while three new players – Maruti Suzuki India, Vinfast and Tesla – entered this segment last fiscal.

Mahindra

Sales: 5,394 units

The big news from April 2026 is that Mahindra has outsold JSW MG Motor India for the second month in a row. April saw Mahindra’s customer deliveries surge 63 percent from 3,301 units a year ago to 5,394 units, giving it a 24 percent market share. In March 2026, Mahindra (5,651 units) had sold more EVs than JSW MG Motor (5,550 units) for the first time in a single month. All three Mahindra EVs – BE 6, XEV 9e and XEV 9S – are contributing strongly to volumes.

JSW MG Motor India

Sales: 4,978 units

Windsor EV remains a consistent volume driver for MG.

JSW MG Motor India, now ranked third, sold 4,978 units last month, up 32 percent YoY (April 2025: 3,776 units). This gives it a 22 percent EV market share, with the game-changing Windsor EV and the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) option being growth accelerators. JSW MG Motor’s portfolio also includes the M9 MPV, the Cyberster roadster, the ZS EV and the Comet EV.

Vinfast India

Sales: 1,231 units

Vinfast ranked fourth among the 17 electric carmakers with 1,231 units and a 5 percent EV market share. This is the first time that the company has crossed 1,000 units in a month since it began deliveries of the locally assembled VF6 and VF7 e-SUVs in October 2025, followed more recently by the VF MPV 7. Between October 2025 and April 2026, Vinfast India has sold over 3,500 EVs.

Maruti Suzuki

Sales: 1,222 units

Maruti sold over 1,000 units of the e Vitara last month.

Maruti Suzuki, too, has surpassed 1,000 units in deliveries for the first time in a month. The company sold 1,222 e Vitara SUVs in April, carving out a 5 percent market share. It is understood that due to production constraints, the company has allocated 2,000-2,500 units for the domestic market, setting aside far more for exports. In fact, the e Vitara (25,549 units) was the fifth most-exported SUV in FY2026 after Maruti’s own Fronx (90,186 units) and Jimny (72,209 units), the Nissan Magnite (56,704 units) and Toyota Hyryder (38,854 units).

Hyundai

Sales: 512 units

Sixth-ranked Hyundai Motor India, which is experiencing the heat from intense competition in the EV market, sold 512 units, down 31 percent YoY (April 2025: 747 units). The company, whose e-PV share is down to 2 percent from 6 percent a year ago, continues to see tepid demand for its main product, the Creta Electric, and the Ioniq 5.

BYD India

Sales: 467 units

BYD India sold 467 units, up 17 percent YoY (April 2025: 398 units). It’s a respectable number given the company’s limited sales and service network and the fact that it operates at a higher average price point with CBU/CKD products. From May 1, the company will increase prices across its EV portfolio by Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,00,000, covering the Atto 3 SUV, the eMax 7 MPV, the Seal sedan and the Sealion 7 SUV

Kia

Sales: 341 units

Carens Clavis EV is the only model driving EV sales for Kia.

Up next is Kia, which posted a 903 percent jump last month on a low year-ago base of just 34 units. The brand has seen its monthly numbers improve following the launch of the mass-market Carens Clavis EV MPV, which has joined the far more expensive EV6 and EV9 that are imported as CBUs (completely built units). However, after strong sales in August (465 units), September (530 units), October (681 units) and November (480 units) of 2025, demand has dropped in 2026: January (321 units), February (304 units), March (476 units) and April (341 units).

Luxury EV sales

Much like mass-market e-PVs, electric luxury cars, SUVs and sedans continue to see a healthy growth in demand. Over the past four fiscal years, the demand for luxury EVs has risen by 450 percent: from 986 units in FY2023 to 5,450 units in FY2026. A similar momentum is likely in FY2027. In the first month of this financial year, total retail sales by the eight OEMs in this sub-segment were 487 units, up 70 percent YoY (April 2025: 286 units).

BMW

Sales: 296 units

BMW, which topped this category in FY2026 with record sales of 3,566 units and is ranked ninth among the 17 EV OEMs in April, maintained its number one status in the luxury segment with 296 units, up 106 percent YoY (April 2025: 144 units), which gave it a 61 percent market share last month.

Mercedes-Benz

Sales: 104 units

Mercedes-Benz, with 104 EVs sold last month, witnessed a 20 percent YoY sales increase (April 2025: 87 units), capturing a 21 percent market share in this category. Expect monthly sales to further improve soon. The company’s CLA Electric sedan has already received 400-plus bookings following the announcement of an indicative price of around Rs 60 lakh, with a majority of buyers entering the luxury car segment for the first time.

The CLA Electric amassed over 400 bookings even before the final price announcement.

Tesla

Sales: 43 units

Tesla has surpassed Volvo India to rank third in the luxury EV segment in April with 43 units. The newly launched Model Y L, the long-wheelbase, six-seat version of Tesla’s bestselling global SUV, gives the American EV maker a more nuanced position in India’s premium EV market, sitting above value-led Chinese rivals like BYD and below more chauffeur-oriented luxury EVs such as the MG M9.

Volvo

Sales: 41 units

Volvo India, the consistent No. 3 in the luxury EV makers list, saw a decline in demand. The Swedish carmaker sold 41 electric SUVs last month, down 7 percent from 44 units in April 2025.

Audi and Porsche

Sales: 1 each

Porsche and Audi sold a single EV each last month, while JLR India and Rolls-Royce did not sell any. The eight luxury EV OEMs had a combined 2.10 percent share of the overall EV market in April 2026, compared to 2.13 percent in April 2025.
