December 2025 car sales: 8 of the top 10 carmakers record growth

India’s passenger vehicle (PV) market closed 2025 on a strong note. The industry’s domestic dispatches rose 26 percent year-on-year (YoY) in December to 4,04,229 units, marking one of the strongest monthly performances in recent years. The rebound was led by a combination of favourable macroeconomic conditions, most notably GST rationalisation and a revival in rural demand, alongside aggressive product actions by automakers. The revival was broad-based, with eight of the top 10 mass-market carmakers reporting YoY growth, with momentum extending across SUVs and entry-level hatchbacks. Let’s take a closer look at how each carmaker fared. 

December 2025 sales for each carmaker 

Maruti Suzuki 

Sales: 1,78,646 units, Change: 37 percent 

Maruti Suzuki reported domestic sales of 1,78,646 units in December, up 37 percent YoY. The performance was led by revived demand for its entry-level and compact models. Sales rose 43 percent YoY for compact cars, 92 percent for mini cars and 33 percent for utility vehicles. At the end of December, Maruti Suzuki’s pending bookings stood at around 1,75,000 units, with sustained demand across both urban and non-urban markets. The automaker attributed the rebound to the GST-led increase in affordability and improving consumer sentiment. Demand in smaller towns and rural markets outpaced the demand in major metros, the company said.

The Dzire was India’s bestselling car in 2025.

Mahindra 

Sales: 50,946 units, Change: 23 percent 

Mahindra continued its strong momentum in the passenger vehicle market in December, clocking domestic sales of 50,946 units, up 23 percent YoY, to retain its position as the second-largest player. The performance was led by robust demand for its SUV portfolio, including the Scorpio N, XUV700 and Thar. However, Mahindra’s sales were down 9.6 percent from November’s 56,336 units, reflecting a post-festive period adjustment. 

Tata Motors 

Sales: 50,046 units, Change: 13 percent 

Tata Motors was hot on the heels of Mahindra, reporting domestic sales of 50,046 units in December. That’s a 13 percent increase from 44,230 units a year ago. Electric vehicle volumes rose 24 percent to 6,906 units, supported by strong demand for models such as the Nexon EV and Punch EV. The company’s diversified powertrain strategy across ICE, CNG and EVs continued to underpin performance.

Hyundai 

Sales: 42,416 units, Change: 0.5 percent

Slotting in behind Tata and Mahindra in fourth position, Hyundai closed December 2025 with domestic sales of 42,416 units – marginally higher than the 42,208 units reported in the same month the previous year. Exports, meanwhile, stood at 16,286 units, up 26.5 percent YoY, pushing the brand to report a cumulative sales growth of 6.6 percent over December 2024, with 58,702 units sold in the month. The new Venue, which launched in November, was a significant volume driver for Hyundai in December.

Toyota 

Sales: 34,157 units, Change: 37 percent

Toyota Kirloskar Motor also delivered a strong performance, with overall sales rising 33 percent to 39,333 units in December. Domestic sales stood at 34,157 units, up 37 percent from 24,887 units in the year-ago period. Meanwhile, its export volumes stood at 5,176 units, up from 4,642 units in December 2024. The company benefited from robust demand for the Innova Hycross, Fortuner and Urban Cruiser Hyryder. 

Kia 

Sales: 18,659 units, Change: 105 percent 

Kia India posted the strongest growth among major automakers, with its domestic volumes rising 105 percent YoY to 18,659 units. This figure also represents the company’s highest December sales since entering the Indian market in 2019. The carmaker attributed this growth to a strong buyer sentiment, likely caused by the GST reduction. However, sales were down 27 percent from November’s 25,489 units.  

JSW MG Motor India 

Sales: 6,500 units, Change: -13.5 percent

JSW MG Motor India recorded sales of 6,500 units in December, a 13.5 percent decline from 7,516 units in December 2024. The volumes were primarily driven by the Windsor EV, which has also emerged as the bestselling EV in India in 2025. 

The Windsor was the bestselling EV in India in 2025.

Honda

Sales: 5,807 units, Change: 3.6 percent 

Honda announced that it recorded domestic sales of 5,807 units in December 2025, a 3.6 percent growth over the previous year’s corresponding period. The company also exported 2,352 units, bringing its total sales to 8,159 units for the month. In comparison, the company had registered 5,603 units in domestic sales and 3,857 units in exports during December 2024. 

Skoda 

Sales: 5,567 units, Change: 22.2 percent

Skoda posted sales of 5,567 units in December 2025, maintaining growth momentum after recording 5,491 units in November 2025. This was also a healthy 22.2 percent growth compared to December 2024, when the company had sold 4,554 units. The Kylaq emerged as a primary growth driver for Skoda during the year. 

Volkswagen 

Sales: 4,256 units, Change: -11 percent 

Volkswagen saw sales decline 11 percent YoY to 4,256 units in December, although it was an increase from 3,342 units in November. A limited product portfolio meant Volkswagen didn’t see much action towards the end of the year, but the carmaker will be looking to bounce back with facelifts lined up for the Virtus and Taigun. 

Both the Taigun and Kushaq are due for a major update this year.

Renault 

Sales: 3,845 units, Change: 33.4 percent 

Renault India’s sales surged 33.4 percent YoY to 3,845 units in December 2025. This performance marked the continuation of growth that began in the third quarter of 2025, following updates to the Kiger and Triber. However, Renault’s real blockbuster will be the Kiger and Triber. However, Renault’s real blockbuster will be the new Duster, which is due for a reveal later this month. 

Nissan 

Sales: 1,902 units, Change: -10.2 percent 

Nissan Motor India concluded the year with strong export momentum, shipping 13,470 units in December – its highest monthly export volume in over a decade. Combined with domestic dispatches of 1,902 units (down 10.2 percent from December 2024), the company achieved consolidated sales of 15,372 units for the month. Like Renault, Nissan will also be looking to pick up the momentum in 2026 with two new launches lined up over the next three months.
