Hello, I want to buy a Kia Seltos. My daily running is around 40 km in the city, with occasional 200-400 km highway trips a month. I’m confused between the HTX A Petrol IVT and HTX A Diesel Manual. I’m not a fan of automatic variants, but I’m considering the automatic because the HTX A petrol manual comes with 16-inch steel wheels. Please suggest which variant I should go for.

Go for the Seltos HTX(A) diesel manual. With about 40km of city driving a day plus a few highway runs, you'll cover roughly 17,000- 19,000 km a year. At that mileage, the diesel's better fuel efficiency adds up to a real saving, enough to recover its price premium over the petrol IVT within a few years. It also lets you keep the manual gearbox you prefer.Be aware that the diesel is relaxed rather than punchy, and its clutch is heavier than the petrol's, so daily city traffic will take a bit more effort. Your regular highway trips will also help keep the diesel particulate filter healthy. If you'd rather not spend extra on the diesel, there's another option. Buy the HTX(A) petrol manual and fit good aftermarket alloys for a fraction of the price difference. You keep the manual and save around Rs 2 lakh upfront, but at your mileage, the diesel will win on running costs over the long term.

I am looking for my first car with a budget of under Rs. 10 lakh. My usage will be mostly city driving in Bangalore, with occasional long trips. I prefer an AMT or CVT transmission with a petrol engine. Please suggest the best car for my needs within this budget.

For a first car that will primarily be used in Bangalore, the i20 Sportz IVT is the most suitable choice within your budget. The 1.2-litre petrol engine paired with the CVT is smooth and easy to drive in traffic, while the i20 offers a comfortable, refined cabin and enough space for a small family. The Sportz IVT is also well equipped without requiring you to stretch to the higher variants. The Honda Amaze V CVT would be our second choice. Its 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and CVT are similarly smooth, and the sedan offers a 416-litre boot and a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating. It is particularly worth considering if you expect to carry luggage on your occasional long trips.

I am purchasing a Creta petrol automatic S (Optional) model. How is this car in terms of fuel efficiency and long-term ownership? How will it perform on occasional long trips of 500- 700 km and routine city commuting?

The Hyundai Creta petrol automatic is a very sensible choice for your usage pattern. The 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with the IVT (CVT) automatic is smooth, refined and well-suited to city driving, making daily commutes effortless. For occasional long trips of 500-700 km, the Creta is comfortable, stable and easy to drive, with a relaxed cruising nature and a well-sorted ride. Fuel efficiency is decent for a midsize petrol automatic SUV, with our testing recording 13.11 kpl overall, with 15.05kpl on the highway and significantly lower figures in heavy city traffic. A realistic expectation would be around 10-12kpl in the city and 13-15kpl on the highway, depending on driving style and conditions. In terms of long-term ownership, Hyundai’s strong service network, reasonable maintenance costs, and proven reliability make the Creta a safe bet. The S (O) variant strikes a good balance between essential features and value, and the overall package is well-rounded. The only thing to keep in mind is that this Hyundai car is due for a full generation change in 2027, so if you are not in a hurry, it may be worth waiting. Otherwise, it remains one of the most dependable and hassle-free choices in the segment.

I have a budget of Rs. 16 lakh and I am getting Victoris ZXI AT and Creta S (O) iVT automatic in petrol. My monthly running is around 1000 km. Please suggest as this will be my first car.

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Victoris ZXI automatic. It is a well-rounded SUV with a reliable naturally aspirated petrol engine, a smooth automatic gearbox and Maruti's extensive service network, which makes ownership stress free. The Creta S Optional IVT is a good car, but at this price point you are getting a lower variant with fewer features, whereas the Victoris ZXI is a higher trim with a better overall value proposition. The Victoris also offers a comfortable ride, good fuel efficiency and a hassle-free ownership experience, which is exactly what you want from your first car.

Hi, as a first-time car buyer, which car would be preferable around a Rs. 15 lakh budget? The budget is not a hard ceiling and is slightly flexible. Requirements: I’m looking for a long-term family car for the next 6-8 years, but it should be fun to drive as well. It should have adequate power with passengers and luggage, especially on hills. My monthly running is approximately 800-1,100 km, mostly in the city. We usually take a trip every 3-4 months, and most of these trips are to hill stations. I’m looking for good automatic petrol options only. My shortlist: 1. 3XO RevX-A AT - Drawback: Boot space (I have experienced this firsthand). 2. Seltos HTK(O) - preferably the Turbo DCT Drawback: Slightly above budget, but I can consider it if it is really worth the extra cost. 3. Elevate V CVT Drawback: Feels like it is missing some premium features. I’m open to other suggestions as well.

For your usage, the Seltos HTK(O) Turbo DCT is the strongest fit if the additional stretch is comfortable. It gives you the performance you will appreciate on hill trips, particularly with passengers and luggage, while offering a spacious, well-equipped cabin and an enjoyable driving experience. The Skoda Kylaq 1.0 TSI AT is also worth adding to the shortlist. It stays comfortably within your budget and is arguably the most natural alternative if you want something compact, fun to drive and easier to own within the original budget. Its turbo petrol and torque converter automatic are well suited to both city driving and occasional hill trips. It has a big enough boot too for your weekend trips. The XUV 3XO RevX-A AT remains a strong option, particularly for performance and rear seat space, but the limited boot is a genuine compromise for family trips. The Elevate V CVT is the simpler long-term choice, with a smooth naturally aspirated engine and good boot space, but it does not have the same punch as the turbocharged options, and the V variant misses some desirable features.
