Maruti Suzuki Wagon R expert review
We like
Roomy cabin
Easy to drive
We don't like
Light build
Not suited for highway use
The third-gen Maruti Suzuki Wagon R maintains its signature tall-boy stance while growing in size. It is 56mm longer, 125mm wider, and comes with a 35mm longer wheelbase. Yet it’s lighter, with even the top-spec 1.2 ZXI AGS weighing just 845kg. It looks more substantial too, thanks to a rounded nose, sculpted sides, and stylish elements like ‘arrow’-shaped headlamps and a blacked-out C-pillar that lends it a floating-roof look. However, lift-type door handles, the absence of alloy wheels as standard, and exposed wheel wells remind you of its budget roots.
7.0
Upright seating and generous headroom make the cabin airy and accessible. The dashboard's two-tone theme and improved textures boost its appeal, but the disjointed dash layout and flat seats leave room for improvement. Fixed front and rear headrests compromise comfort and visibility. However, the cabin is roomier now, comfortably seating three at the back with better legroom. Boot space has doubled to 341 litres, and features like 60:40 split seats and ample storage throughout the cabin make it even more practical. A lack of a smartphone slot and rubberised storage pads are minor irritants.
8.0
The Wagon R’s uprated 1.2-litre engine transforms it into a far livelier car. Compared to the previous 1.0, it accelerates briskly, with strong mid-range performance and a near-100hp/ton power-to-weight ratio. Acceleration benchmarks show vast improvement—0-100kph in just 11.98 seconds. However, the engine gets noisy past 5,000rpm, and the light manual gearbox could be less rubbery and slicker. The 5-speed AMT, needs to be smoother, but if you have to have an automatic, it does the job.
8.0
Efficiency is a Wagon R hallmark. The 1.0-litre petrol delivers 24.35 km/l (MT) and 25.19 km/l (AMT), while the 1.2-litre variant manages 23.56 km/l (MT) and 24.43 km/l (AMT). The 1.0-litre S-CNG impresses further with 33.47 km/kg, making it one of the most economical hatchbacks in its class.
9.0
Thanks to a stiffer platform and wider track, the Wagon R feels more planted than before. Ride quality is noticeably more mature over rough roads, though high-speed composure is still average, and the light steering doesn’t inspire confidence. That said, urban comfort and suspension refinement, what important here, are improved.
7.0
The Wagon R introduces Maruti’s 7.0-inch SmartPlay Studio system with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and remote operation via app. Steering-mounted controls are now included, while safety kit—like rear parking sensors, ABS, and dual airbags on higher trims—is standard across the range. However, the body shell could be stronger for added crash safety and there are no rear headrests to protect passengers against whiplash.
7.0
Now more refined, powerful, and practical, the 2025 Wagon R remains a strong value proposition. It may not excite enthusiasts, but its spaciousness, fuel economy, and ease of use make it a smart budget pick. Prices start at Rs 5.54 lakh for the 1.0 LXi and Rs 5.99 lakh for the 1.2 VXi (ex-showroom, Delhi).

•1dHello Team, I am planning to buy a small automatic car with a budget of ₹7–8 lakh. My usage will be primarily in the city, with occasional highway drives. I am looking for a car that is suitable for a 5-foot-tall driver, offers good front and rear visibility, has a small turning radius for easy maneuverability, decent ground clearance, and adequate power. Additionally, the car should be easy to drive for both male and female drivers, and safety is an important priority.

Autocar India
We would recommend the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 1.2 AMT for you. Its elevated seating and large windows give a great view out and will put you at immediate ease. The Wagon R is also easy to drive thanks to its light steering and small turning circle. The Wagon R with the larger 1.2-litre engine also has sufficient pep for the city, while the AMT auto brings in convenience. The AMT is smooth enough, but you will feel a lag and pause in shifts if you drive with enthusiasm.Do note, the Wagon R isn't the ideal highway vehicle. It doesn't feel quite as surefooted as a lower-riding vehicle would. As an alternative, you could consider the Tata Tiago AMT XT.

•2dI currently own a Maruti Suzuki WagonR 1.2 ZXi AMT and am looking to upgrade to a new car. My key requirements are easy ingress and egress for my 75-year-old mother, along with sufficient boot space to accommodate a wheelchair. Which car would be the most suitable upgrade for my needs?

Autocar India
Go for the Honda Elevate VX CVT - for your needs, it is the easiest upgrade from your Maruti Suzuki WagonR and the most practical for daily use. The seat is higher than a regular car but not too high, so it is easier to get in and out without climbing. The rear seat is spacious and comfortable, the doors open wide, and the floor is relatively flat, which helps. The boot is big and square, so a folded wheelchair fits cleanly. The CVT is also seamless in operation and will feel like a big upgrade over the AMT in your Wagon R.One thing to be aware of: the boot lip will be a bit higher than your WagonR's, so you lift the wheelchair a little more while loading. If you often carry more people or want a lower loading height for the wheelchair, look at the Maruti XL6. It has very easy step-in and comfy captain seats in the middle row. But you will likely need the third row folded to keep the wheelchair in the boot. When you test drive, carry the folded wheelchair and try loading it, and have your mother step in and out of the rear seat to check the height and support.

•3dI am planning to buy a car primarily for commuting to my office, which is around 12 km from my home. I already own a Hyundai Verna. I am looking for a second car that offers good fuel efficiency along with basic features for daily use. Which car would be the most suitable for my requirements?

Autocar India
Go for the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R VXi 1.0 AMT - for a short 12 km office run, it uses less fuel, is very easy in traffic, and gives all the basics without spending extra. Since you already have a Hyundai Verna for longer trips, the Wagon R’s small size and tall seat make daily city driving and parking simple. The AMT's shifts are relatively smooth, if a bit slow, but it will make driving in stop-and-go traffic a lot less tiresome. If you don't encounter much traffic on your route, then the manual will be fine too. The VXi has the basics: good AC, power windows, remote locking, rear parking sensors, and a simple Bluetooth music setup with a Smartplay dock available to mount your phone. Maruti’s wide service network and low-cost parts also make it a safe and easy second car to own.One thing to be aware of: the Wagon R can feel a little basic, and if you want something with a bit more style, then the Maruti Suzuki Swift is a better bet.Test drive both the manual and AMT and see which works better for your use.

•4dCan you suggest some good used cars under ₹1.5 lakh? This will be my first car, and I plan to use it to build driving confidence. My usage will be minimal, with occasional driving and perhaps one long trip per month.

Autocar India
Go for a clean Maruti Wagon R VXi manual from a trusted seller; it is the easiest first car to live with under your budget and will help you build confidence fast. The Wagon R sits a little taller, so you step in and out easily and see the road clearly, which really calms nerves when you are new. The steering is light, the clutch is easy, and the gear shifts are simple, so city drives feel stress-free. For your once-a-month highway run, it cruises calmly at normal speeds. The AC is strong, and you will find Maruti service and parts almost anywhere, which keeps running costs low even if you use the car only sometimes. One thing to be aware of is that older Wagon Rs do not have many safety features by today’s standards. So, look for a car with at least a driver's airbag and ABS if possible. Also, it can lean a bit in fast turns, so do not push it hard on the highway. If you want something newer for the same money, a Renault Kwid 1.0 manual is worth a look; it feels nice to drive and has good ground clearance, but it is narrower for four adults. When you test drive, practice a tight U-turn, reverse into a parking spot, and do a short highway stretch. Buy the car that feels easiest to handle and has clear service records, even if it is a year older or a trim lower.

•2wI want to buy an automatic car for city driving, mainly for commuting between home and office. My budget is ₹7 lakh.

Autocar India
For your requirement of an automatic car under Rs 7 lakh for city driving, we would suggest going for the Maruti Suzuki Celerio VXI AMT.It is a proven product and well-suited for daily city use. The 1.0-litre petrol engine is refined for a 3-cylinder unit and feels responsive, with enough torque for typical city conditions. The AMT gearbox is well-calibrated and smooth, which makes it easy to drive in stop-go traffic. The Celerio is also compact and easy to park, which is important for city usage. At the same time, the cabin is surprisingly spacious and can comfortably seat four adults. If you want something with even more space, you can also consider the Maruti Wagon R VXI AMT, which just about fits within your budget.

•2wHi, I want to buy a new car for a family of 5. Long drives will be once or twice a year. I am looking for longevity, low maintenance cost, a strong service network, and all necessary features. My budget is around ₹6.5 lakh on-road. Kindly suggest which brand and variant would be best for my requirements.

Autocar India
The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is a good pick for your requirements. It's a reliable car that's affordable to maintain and comes backed by Maruti's massive service network. What makes the Wagon R well-suited to you is its spacious cabin. The Wagon R is surprisingly roomy for a car of its size and can accommodate five passengers in decent comfort. We'd recommend the more powerful 1.2-litre version, which adds more power over the base 1-litre engine. The 1.2’s superior performance makes a noticeable difference in both everyday driving and occasional highway trips. You can consider the Wagon R ZXi 1.2, which is within your Rs 6.5 lakh budget. If you are open to spending a bit more, the ZXI Plus is worth a look. It packs in a touchscreen-based infotainment system among other feature additions.

•4wHi, I am currently using a Maruti Suzuki Wagon R LXI CNG. My monthly running is around 900 km, with approximately 80% of my driving on highways. I have noticed some performance limitations on highways, so I am planning to upgrade. Which car would be more suitable for my usage pattern? Also, should I go for a CNG or a petrol car?

Autocar India
CNG cars are cheaper to run, but the flipside is a drop in performance. For someone who drives primarily on the highway, a CNG is not ideal. We'd recommend a petrol engine, which will give you more power and help you comfortably maintain highway speeds. If you are comfortable with a Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, the larger 1.2-litre petrol engine is a natural upgrade. The engine gives it much more zip than the 1.0-litre unit of your model, and you will feel the benefits on highway drives. Do note, the tall Wagon R isn't the ideal highway vehicle. The Maruti Suzuki Dzire is a good pick for your needs. It's spacious and good to drive, and what will ease your comfort out on the highway is its 5-star Global NCAP crash rating.

•4wI am looking to buy a car for my father, who is around 64 years old and still a working professional. His daily city commute is around 30 km, and he currently owns a Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire. Considering his daily urban usage and ease of driving, which compact car would you recommend as a suitable replacement for the Swift Dzire?

Autocar India
By definition, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire is a 'compact' sub-4-meter car; we assume you mean your father would like a smaller hatchback instead. In this case, the Maruti WagonR would be a good option. It's notably shorter in length compared to the Dzire and narrower too, so your father should find it easier to manage within the city. The higher seating height also gives you a better view outside, and it helps with an easier entry and exit, too.

•5wI am planning to buy my first car. My budget is a maximum of ₹7 lakh. I am thinking of Ignis, but I am also confused, as it has not received any major updates in a long time.

Autocar India
The Maruti Suzuki Ignis, for some reason, never really clicked as a mainstream car and isn’t among Maruti-Suzuki’s big sellers. The quirky styling is not to everyone’s taste, and that’s probably why it hasn’t found mass appeal like the Maruti Suzuki Swift. That said, underneath it uses the same tried-and-tested 1.2-litre K-series petrol engine, so mechanically it’s proven and easy to live with.In fact, the Ignis is quite an interesting car. The part-hatch, part-compact-SUV design gives it a distinct character, and the tall stance and good ground clearance are definite advantages on bad roads. It feels compact to drive, but you sit a bit higher than in a regular hatchback, which many first-time buyers appreciate. The reason Maruti-Suzuki hasn’t updated it significantly is simple: average monthly sales of around 2,000 units are low by Maruti standards, so it doesn’t justify heavy investment. The company seems content to let it continue as a niche offering. That, however, shouldn’t dissuade you if you genuinely like the car. It’s reliable, relatively affordable to maintain and fits comfortably within your Rs 7 lakh on-road budget. If you want something more mainstream and easier to resell later, you could also consider the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R or even the lower variants of the Swift, which are hugely popular. But if the Ignis appeals to you, there’s no strong reason to avoid it.

•5wNamaste Team. I own a Wagon R VXI 2015 and now wish to upgrade. We are a family of five, and my monthly driving is not more than 600 km. I am a driving enthusiast, and my budget is ₹13 lakh on-road. I do not want to consider Tata. My family has been associated with Maruti Suzuki for the past 30 years, but I am open to other brands.

Autocar India
If you're an enthusiast and a keen driver, your best bet is the Hyundai i20. It is a much larger hatchback than your Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, which should be comfortable for your family of five, and in your budget, you should get the fully loaded N8 variant too.It is available with a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DCT auto gearbox, and both are a good mix of fun and ease of use. However, it has to be said that the i20 is now starting to show its age, and fun as it is to drive, you may want to look at a more modern offering. If so, check out the Skoda Kylaq, which is even more spacious and practical, but also comes with a punchy and enthusiastic 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine. It's got great dynamics and a smooth 6-speed automatic gearbox, if you want it. However, do note that it is more expensive, and you will have to settle for a mid-spec variant in your budget.
