Pick the Maruti Wagon R AMT. For elderly parents it’s the easiest to get in and out of, thanks to the tall seat and wide doors, and its boot is the biggest in your Rs. 6-7 lakh band, so weekend luggage is no fuss. The automatic is an AMT or automated manual transmission, which is not as smooth and seamless as other types of automatics but as as far as AMT's go it does the job quite well, plus it delivers a very good mileage. Just know it feels light and a bit bouncy at higher highway speeds, so keep cruising sensible. If he wants something that feels tougher on the highway, the Tata Tiago AMT is the next best fit. It rides better and feels more solid, but the seat is a bit lower and the boot is smaller than the Wagon R.

Pick the Maruti Suzuki Jimny; at this price, it is the only real off-roader that can also play the role of a family SUV. It has a proper 4x4 system with low-range, light body and short overhangs, so it is properly capable off-road. A usable back seat makes school runs and city errands easy, and its small size means parking is stress-free. Running costs and service are simple almost anywhere, being a Maruti.Do note, it is a narrow 4-seater with a small boot, making it ideal for a family of four, not five with luggage. The 1.5 petrol engine is fine in the city but feels underpowered on highways.If your budget is a strict on-road Rs. 15 lakh, look for deals on the Jimny Alpha MT or the Jimny Zeta AT.

Yes, the Maruti Suzuki Invicto is a solid buy if you want a smooth and efficient family mover. The strong-hybrid powertrain shines in traffic, so you get a quiet, relaxed drive, and it is very fuel-efficient too. Space and comfort are its big strengths, especially the second row, and the light steering and good visibility make this big MPV easy to handle in town.If you often do airport runs or weekend trips, it works well, but be aware of two things. With all three rows up, boot space is tight. Also, when fully loaded on highways, it feels calm rather than quick.It is priced on the higher side for a Maruti, and you miss a few fancy features the Toyota Innova Hycross it is based on gets, but for stress-free city use and long-term running costs, it makes sense.

Go for the Marutu Suzuki Victoris AWD, not the Marutu Suzuki Jimny, for what you plan to do. You said no real off-roading, just “all sorts of roads” - broken village stretches, rain-soaked highways, mild slush. The Victoris’ AWD will send drive to the rear when it slips, so you keep moving without the drama, while giving you far better ride comfort, highway stability, space and boot than the Jimny. You also get a more modern cabin and features like a 360-degree camera, and in some trims, ADAS is available.Jimny’s low-range 4x4 only really pays off in deep ruts, rock steps and deep mud. For daily use, it’s slower, bouncier, narrower, and the boot is smaller.One honest catch with the Victoris: AWD won't be as fuel-efficient as the FWD model. If your routes are just rough and unpredictable rather than extreme, the Victoris AWD will suit you fine.

The Kia Syros HTK (base) Turbo-Petrol MT variant is an excellent family car that seems to meet your requirements of comfort, highway stability and good air-conditioning. Additionally, this car is surprisingly spacious despite being under four metres in length. Alternatively, you could consider the new Hyundai Venue HX2 Turbo-petrol MT or Mahindra XUV 3XO RevX M. Both of which are good options, and should be in the Rs 10 lakh on-road price.If you're keen to explore used options, we'd recommend getting the newest possible example covered by factory warranty for added peace of mind. You could consider a Honda City or Maruti Grand Vitara (or Toyota Hybrid), which are safe, sensible options that should be priced at around Rs 10 lakh.

Pick the Hyundai Venue. For a 17 km city run, it gives you the upright SUV feel and visibility you want, yet stays small and easy to park, and it rides over speed breakers and broken roads far better than your Alto. It also feels like a solid upgrade inside and has a strong safety rating, while running costs stay reasonable.Be clear on one thing, though: its 1.2-litre engine is fine in town but not very quick on highways. If you often do fast trips with family, the turbo petrol will be a better choice. If that exceeds your budget, then the Fronx turbo manual is a good alternative. Renault Kiger is a good value, and the turbo is fun, though the cabin feels a bit budget and the brand’s network is thinner. The Wagon R remains the cheapest and simplest step up, but it won't feel like a significant enough step up from your Alto. The Tata Punch is a segment down from your other choices and won't feel as roomy on the inside.Overall, the Venue is a good fit for your needs.

Buy the Kia Seltos; it hits your mix of big-city commuting in Hyderabad/Mumbai, and 1-2 highway runs a month better than the others. The 1.5 petrol with the automatic is easy in traffic, returns sensible mileage, and the light controls make it a painless jump from the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R. Cabin space and boot are genuinely family-friendly for 4-5 with luggage, and higher trims add city-friendly kit like the 360 camera and ventilated seats that you will actually use in summer. The only real trade-off is a slightly firm low-speed ride, and that top trims can stretch the budget.The Hyundai Creta is a close second if you prefer a softer, comfier feel. The Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun are the most fun to drive, but the rear seat and boot are tighter for five. The Honda Elevate is simple and efficient, but it feels a step behind on features.About waiting: the next-gen Hyundai Creta is expected early next year. Test mules have been spotted in India, which usually means it is in the final testing stages. It will move to the current Seltos K3 platform, which should mean a roomier cabin. It will also feature a new design language and a significantly improved interior. It's worth remembering that new launches are frequently delayed, and it's hard to be certain until an official confirmation from Hyundai. If you need a car soon, then get the Seltos now.

Since your monthly usage is very high, we'd advise you to avoid the Toyota Innova Hycross NA petrol, as it isn't very fuel-efficient. You could consider the Maruti Invicto Zeta Plus hybrid. Maruti is offering substantial discounts on the car, and if you're lucky, it could even fall within your Rs 26 lakh budget. Being a badge-engineered version of the Toyota Innova Hycross, the Invicto is just as spacious, comfortable and efficient, and as a family car that'll be used for long distances, it is certainly one you must consider.The Tata Safari Diesel is another capable, comfortable seven-seater to cover long distances with family. Compared to a Mahindra XUV 7XO, the Tata Sierra is more comfortable for the third row occupants, while still having slightly better boot space, hence it gets our vote.Alternatively, have you considered an electric vehicle? The Mahindra XEV 9S is a great option, and will be very economical to run. Also, unlike the XUV 7XO, which gets a fixed middle row, the XEV 9S has an adjustable (sliding) middle bench to free up space for third row occupants. As far as power, range and charging times go, the XEV 9S is a very capable option. If you can arrange for home charging, this is one car you must seriously consider.

Get the Maruti Suzuki Baleno 1.2 petrol manual. It fits three in the back better than most at this price, sips fuel, and Maruti’s service network and parts costs will keep ownership simple. For your 60% city and some rougher rural runs, it rides comfortably enough, has a light clutch and easy steering, the AC cools fast, the sound system is crisp, and the large boot swallows a weekend’s luggage without drama.It is also one of the few cars under Rs. 10 lakh that can balance space, mileage and low maintenance without feeling cheap inside. If you pick a mid variant, you’ll still get the essentials and stay within budget in most cities.However, if safety rating is your top concern, then the Tata Altroz petrol manual feels more solid, and its Harman audio is better, but it is not as light to drive in traffic, and Tata service can be patchy.In the used car space, a gently used Maruti Brezza manual keeps the same strengths and adds peace of mind.
