I want to buy a petrol car below Rs 7-8 lakh for about 5,000 km of running per annum. Please suggest a model. I do not want to buy Maruti, MG, Mahindra, Honda, Nissan, Skoda, Volkswagen, Kia, or any Chinese-made car.

With Maruti out, you have limited options in this budget, and you will have to compromise on either space or features. Nevertheless, you can consider either the Tata Punch 1.2 Petrol or the Hyundai Exter 1.2 petrol AMT.
The Tata Punch was updated recently, so you get a fresh-looking car with updated interiors. You can opt for the Tata Punch Pure+ variant, which comes with an 8-inch touchscreen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, cruise control, and more. It also offers a tough feel and has one of the better suspension setups in the segment. In case you want to choose automatic, opt for the Hyundai Exter. It has one of the smoothest AMTs and comes with more or less the same features as Punch.

I am buying a car for my mother. We need an automatic car mainly for city use, and long trips will be rare. I am considering the Exter S AMT, as its AMT is said to be better than others at this price point, and it also offers higher ground clearance. The other option is the i20 Magna CVT, which is around Rs 50 to 55K more expensive than the Exter S AMT variant. For bumper-to-bumper traffic and city driving, should I go for the i20 CVT, or is the Exter AMT smooth enough to stick with? Also, which transmission is more reliable in the long term?

Even though it is a bit pricier, the Hyundai i20 CVT (or IVT) feels like a more premium car compared to the Hyundai Exter AMT. The i20's drive experience is smoother and more refined thanks to its CVT, and it is more spacious and comfortable too. Also, while ground clearance is less than the Exter, it is more than adequate for our conditions.
Besides ground clearance, the only other reason to consider the Exter over the i20 is for its more compact dimensions, which make it relatively easier to manoeuvre and park in tight spaces. These aside, the i20 is superior in nearly every aspect.

Please suggest a car under 8 lakhs with CNG for comfortable highway drives, as 70% driving will be for highways only.

Among the CNG options under Rs 8 lakh, the Hyundai Exter and Tata Punch are worth a look. The Hyundai Exter CNG offers better performance than the Punch CNG, making it more suitable for highway usage. Do note, neither car feels absolutely effortless on the highway, and the lack of power is noticeable when you need to overtake.
The Punch packs in a few more features in Smart CNG trim versus an Exter 1.2 EX, which is comparable in price. There's also a newness to the Punch that is fresh from a facelift. The Exter is due for an update of its own towards the middle of 2026.

I’m planning to buy a car with a strict ₹8 lakh budget. Please suggest the best possible options.

It's hard to guide you to the ideal car without knowing more of your requirements. However, we have trimmed the list of options down to a few cars that excel in certain aspects.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 1.2 AMT - The Wagon R scores for ease of use. The high seating, large glass area and light controls put drivers at immediate ease. Superb cabin space for this size of car.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno Delta MT -  A smooth engine and great ride comfort are highlights of the Baleno. Delta trim packs in a reasonable number of feel-good features.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire MT VXI - Sedan shape has its charm. Smooth engine and comfortable ride make it a good choice.

Tata Punch Pure Plus S MT - Tough feel and absorbent suspension make it feel like a junior SUV. Not as spacious as other options.

Hyundai Exter S Plus Pro Pack - Easy to drive and comfortable for city use.

Nissan Magnite N Connecta/ Renault Kiger Techno MT - Visually, the largest and offers the most space too. Decent features for the money. The engine is weak, however.

What is the difference between different types of automatic transmissions (AT, AMT, CVT, TC, etc.), in terms of smoothness, driving comfort, mileage, etc?

This question is often asked, and here is an easy explanation of its advantages and what to watch out for.
AMT (Automated Manual Transmission): This is the most basic type of automatic. It is essentially a manual gearbox with an automated clutch. It is the most affordable automatic and usually delivers good fuel efficiency, often close to that of a manual. However, shifts are noticeable and can feel jerky at low speeds. You will find this gearbox in affordable cars like the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, Tata Punch, and Hyundai Exter.
Torque Converter Automatic (TC / AT): This is now commonly used in many mass-market cars like the Kylaq, Sierra, and Mahindra 7XO. It is the most consistently smooth and comfortable automatic. Gear shifts are seamless, especially in slow city traffic, making it very easy to drive. Modern torque converters have improved fuel efficiency, though they still trail the others in this regard.
CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission): This is the smoothest gearbox when it comes to city driving. CVTs don’t have fixed gears, which makes them very smooth in stop-start traffic. They are usually excellent for fuel efficiency, especially in the city. The downside is the “rubber band” effect under hard acceleration, where engine revs rise without a matching increase in speed. Overall, they are best for relaxed city driving.
DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission): This is best suited to drivers who enjoy performance and fast shifting action. DCTs offer quick gear shifts and feel sporty on open roads. They are also quite efficient. However, in heavy traffic, they can feel hesitant or jerky if not well calibrated, and long-term maintenance costs can be higher than those of other automatics.

Hello, Dear Team, Please suggest a car for my family - I’m very confused. We are four members, and everyone is above 6 ft tall. My budget is ₹9-12 lakh. My priorities are space and fuel economy of at least 20 km/l. My driving will be 50 % city and 50 % highway. We have considered cars like the Exter CNG, Syros diesel manual (but we’re concerned about DPF issues), Brezza CNG (but no boot space), and Victoris CNG (above budget). Please suggest suitable options.

The Hyundai Exter ENG would be the best for you and your family. Given that you are all very tall, the car has enough room inside, even at the rear, where there will be sufficient legroom. The seat backs are also reclined a fair bit, and this gives you more effective headroom, too.

The CNG variant also uses the dual-tank system, so you get a usable boot space, and of course, the Exter CNG will come in under your budget.

Let me know any automatic, preferably multi-fuel small SUV under ₹10 lakh.

Your two options in this price range are the recently facelifted Tata Punch and the Hyundai Exter. Both these sub-compact SUVs are available with petrol and CNG options.

The Exter has a smoother powertrain and slightly more interior space. But the Punch feels tougher, is more comfortable, is better equipped and has scored a 5-star Bharat NCAP crash test rating.

Moreover, the Punch CNG is available with both manual and AMT automatic gearbox options, and across more variants, which gives you more choice.

Hello Team Autocar, I am planning to buy a new car within a budget of ₹10-13 lakh. I am looking for a compact automatic car suitable for driving in Bangalore, with an efficient engine delivering around 15 kmpl. The car should comfortably seat five people with good legroom and adjustable headrests, along with features such as a touchscreen infotainment system, good speakers, wireless charging, and a sunroof. I also prefer LED headlamps and tail lamps, parking sensors, a dashcam, and rear wiper with defogger.

Unfortunately, there aren't many cars that would meet all those requirements under Rs 13 lakh. You could increase your budget and get a more premium offering, or be prepared to sacrifice a few things and stick with your budget.

Within your budget, your two best bets are the Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger, which both offer exceptional value for money. They come with 1.0-litre turbo petrol engines and smooth CVT auto gearboxes, and if driven carefully, can deliver good fuel economy. Their touchscreens are decent but not great, and it's a similar story with their audio systems; neither gets a sunroof.

The Hyundai Exter and Tata Punch facelifts are more affordable but not spacious enough for five, and get clunky AMT auto gearboxes.

Hello, I am looking to buy a new or used automatic petrol car for my retired parents. They are based in Namakkal, and their usage is mainly weekend highway drives to temples and relatives’ homes, along with some city traffic (around 60% highway usage). Ride comfort, suspension quality, and easy ingress & egress are the top priorities. Both of them are 6ft. The budget is around ₹10 lakhs. Please let me know if you can assist with suitable recommendations. Thank you.

Among the new cars that are worth looking at, there's the recently launched Tata Punch AMT facelift, Hyundai Exter AMT, Nissan Magnite AMT and Renault Kiger AMT. Each of the models offers an elevated seating position, making ingress and egress easier for your parents.
Of the four, the Nissan and Renault feel better suited to highway use thanks to their larger footprint. Power and performance aren't great, however, and shifts on the AMT gearbox aren't slick either.
If you are open to buying used, we'd suggest you look for a 2022 or newer gen 2 Maruti Suzuki Brezza AT. It's got a smooth automatic transmission, and ride comfort is very good too. Further, the high seating and comfy seats are elements your parents will appreciate.

I am currently using a Hyundai Venue (2019) and will be retiring by April. My car usage will be limited after retirement, mainly on weekends and for two long trips in a year. I am planning to buy a CNG car with a budget of around ₹10 lakh. Since I have been driving a manual car for over 15 years, should I continue with a CNG manual or opt for a CNG AMT, considering my age? Please suggest which option would be better.

You would have far more options opting for a manual gearbox with a CNG engine. Since you are used to a manual, this should be fine, and we would suggest you look at the Hyundai Exter or the Tata Punch.
Both have the dual tank CNG option, which sits below the boot floor, thus leaving you with enough boot space, and both cars offer you a slightly elevated seating position and an easy entry and exit.
If, however, you would like to opt for an automatic, an AMT - which is the only type of automatic available with CNG - will not be a very smooth gearbox as far as automatics go, but in heavy traffic conditions would still be better than a manual. In this case, look at the Tata Tiago, which also has the dual CNG tank advantage.
