I purchased a Kia Sonet 1.0 iMT in 2024 after owning Maruti Suzuki Dzire for around 11 years. I was so bored of driving it for more than a decade that I rushed to change. I wanted a compact SUV as an upgrade but settled for a sub-compact SUV due to budget constrain or may be due to lack guidance and understanding. Soon after buying it, I realized that this is not the car that I want to drive. I want a vehicle that looks and feels rugged but at the same time, is usable for daily commute with 80 - 90% city drive. I want to feel the same way I feel when I drive my Royal Enfield (strong and rugged). In less than 3 years, I am looking for a change again but this is time I don't want to make the same mistake. I have a few cars in mind but I am not sure which one should I go for. I have shortlisted Renault Duster Hybrid (upcoming), Tata Harrier AT (diesel), Thar Roxx AT (diesel), Toyota Hyryder Hybrid and Hyundai Creta AT (Diesel or Petrol). I drive around 1000 to 1200 km per month, mostly in the city but when I plan for long drives to mountains in Himachal, Uttarakhand or even Leh, I shouldn't have to worry about it. My budget is between 17 to 19 lakh (ex-Showroom). Please advise.

Go for the Renault Duster Hybrid when it launches. It is the best fit for what you are looking for. You want a car that feels rugged and strong like your Royal Enfield, but is still usable for daily city driving. The Duster has always been known for its tough, no-nonsense character and excellent ride quality, and the new generation continues that tradition. The hybrid powertrain will make it much more suitable for your 80-90% city driving, while still being capable enough for long drives to the mountains without you having to worry about fuel efficiency or reliability. The Tata Harrier diesel is a good car, but it is a much larger vehicle and not as easy to live with in the city. The Thar Roxx/OG is a great lifestyle vehicle, but it is not practical as a daily driver. The Toyota Hyryder Hybrid is a sensible choice, but it does not have the same rugged character you are looking for. The Hyundai Creta diesel is a good all-rounder, but it does not feel as tough or as special as the Duster. With your running, you could consider the 1.3 turbo petrol Duster with the DCT as well. It is not the most efficient engine and gearbox combination, but given your limited running, the fuel economy penalty should not be significant.

What will be the estimated price difference between current Creta top variant (MT Diesel turbo) vs new-gen 2027 creta (MT Diesel turbo )?

The bigger uncertainty is whether the 2027 Creta will retain the diesel at all. Current reports suggest Hyundai is developing the next-generation Creta with the existing 1.5-litre petrol, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol and 1.5-litre diesel, while also working on a strong-hybrid version. However, the final powertrain lineup and variant structure have not been confirmed. So, if the hybrid is prioritized by Hyundai, the diesel could potentially be dropped or restricted to fewer variants. That makes trying to predict the price of a new-gen Creta diesel MT versus today's top diesel MT somewhat speculative. The current top-spec Creta diesel MT is around Rs 18.94 lakh ex-showroom. The new generation will move to the K3 platform, grow in size and get more equipment, so some price increase is likely, but there is no reliable number yet.

I am 67 years old and plan to drive extensively across India. I am looking for a reliable, easy-to-maintain, sub-four-metre diesel SUV with a good automatic transmission. I do not want a sunroof or unnecessary features, but would prefer all the essential equipment. Please suggest the best possible options.

Both the Kia Sonet and Hyundai Venue are the best diesel automatic compact SUVs on sale today, especially if the priority is effortless long-distance driving with low running costs. Both use a strong 1.5-litre turbo-diesel engine producing 116hp and 250Nm, paired with a smooth six-speed torque-converter automatic. This is an important advantage over the AMT automatics offered in several other sub-four-metre diesel SUVs, as a torque-converter feels more natural and refined in traffic, while also being better suited to relaxed highway cruising. For driving extensively across India, this powertrain makes a great deal of sense. The diesel’s strong low-end torque gives both SUVs confident overtaking ability even with passengers and luggage on board, while the automatic takes the effort out of city traffic and long days behind the wheel. The Venue diesel automatic has an official fuel-efficiency figure of 17.9kpl, while the Sonet diesel automatic is rated at around 19kpl, though real-world figures will naturally depend on driving conditions.Between the two, we would pick the Hyundai Venue. It is the fresher product, has a marginally longer wheelbase and feels a touch roomier than the Sonet, particularly in terms of overall cabin ambience. More importantly for someone planning extensive travel, Hyundai’s wider service network across India offers additional peace of mind for routine maintenance or support away from home. The Sonet remains an excellent alternative, particularly if you prefer its styling, cabin design or a particular variant’s feature mix. But for your requirement of a reliable, easy-to-maintain, no-nonsense diesel automatic SUV that can cover serious distances comfortably, the Venue would be our first recommendation. Choose a sensible mid-spec diesel automatic variant if available, and avoid paying extra for features you do not need, such as a sunroof.

Is Tata Punch coming in diesel by the end of this year or early next year? Need to replace my 2017 i20 diesel asta. Annual run of 20-21k with 50:50 usage. Budget is 10-13 lakh on-road, Gurgaon. Need something that has more ground clearance than i20 as it would be plying in the village or tier 2 cities as well. PS: Don’t want to be in long queues for the CNG and EV charging isn’t possible at my current residence.

No, the Tata Punch is not expected to get a diesel engine this year or early next year. Given your annual running of 20-21,000 km with a 50:50 city-highway split, diesel car still makes the most financial sense, especially since you do not want to deal with CNG queues or electric car charging limitations. The Mahindra XUV 3XO diesel is the best fit for your requirements. It offers significantly more ground clearance than your Hyundai i20, which will be useful on village roads and in tier 2 cities. The diesel engine is efficient and well-suited to your running, and this Mahindra car is one of the most spacious compact SUVs in the segment, making it a comfortable upgrade from the i20. It also fits within your Rs 10-13 lakh on-road budget in Gurgaon.

Hi, I am currently driving a 2018 S-Cross diesel and wish to upgrade to a new car. My daily commute is around 80+ km, with occasional long trips of 200+ km. My budget is below Rs. 15 lakh. Kindly suggest a few good options available at present. Thanks.

With an 80+ km daily commute and a budget under Rs 15 lakh, the Mahindra XUV 3XO diesel is the most sensible upgrade from your S-Cross diesel. The 3XO diesel is one of the few strong diesel options left in this price bracket, and it is well suited to your high daily running. The engine is punchy, efficient and well proven, and the car itself is spacious, comfortable and well equipped for the money. It also offers a good balance between city usability and highway stability, making it a strong all-rounder for your usage pattern. The Hyundai Venue diesel is also worth considering, especially if you're considering the automatic version. The Venue HX5 diesel-auto will fall within your budget - it is smooth, refined, and is likely to return respectable fuel efficiency.
