The year-on-year growth for rural markets was nearly triple that of urban areas last month.

Passenger vehicle (PV) retail sales in FY2027 are off to a strong start. According to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations, carmakers sold 4,07,335 units last month, recording the highest-ever April sales and a 12.21 percent year-on-year (YoY) growth.

  1. Rural markets’ share in PV sales rises to 41.2 percent, urban at 58.8 percent
  2. CNG and EV segments’ market share grew YoY in April 2026

Interestingly, while retail sales were up YoY in April 2026, they fell 7.45 percent from the previous month. This can be attributed to the typical surge in fiscal year-end dispatches.

Rural markets continue to outpace urban areas in growth

A notable trend is the persistent outperformance of rural over urban markets in terms of YoY growth. In April 2026, rural sales surged 20.4 percent, almost triple the 7.11 percent pace for urban centres.

While 58.8 percent of overall retail sales came from urban markets last month, the share of rural areas has been rising steadily – from 38.3 percent in FY2025 to 39.7 percent in FY2026 to 41.2 percent in April 2026 – and all signs point to this momentum sustaining in FY2027.
