I am looking to buy a new car with a maximum budget of ₹10-15 lakh. I want a car with a 4- or 5-star safety rating that delivers a decent fuel average. My usage will be mostly on weekends, with a maximum of 500-700 km per month. I want an automatic car, but not an AMT. My shortlist includes: Skoda Kyalq Signature Plus/Prestige TC 3XO AX5L Tata Nexon Creative Plus PS Dark 7 DCA Please suggest the best option.

Unfortunately, none of the turbo petrol options you listed will be very efficient. Given your limited running, this should not be a concern.

We would recommend choosing between the Skoda Kylaq and the Mahindra XUV 3XO. Both are engaging to drive, offer strong turbo petrol engines, smooth 6-speed torque converter automatics, and a comfortable ride.

The key difference is space. The Mahindra is the better five-seater thanks to its wider body, while the Skoda offers a larger and more practical boot.

The Tata Nexon remains one of the highest-selling cars in the segment, but it is also among the oldest and is due for an update.

I am looking for a petrol SUV with an automatic gearbox, sunroof, hill assist, good rear-seat comfort, and preferably paddle shifters. My on-road budget is ₹15 lakh in Thane. Please suggest.

You should go for the Tata Nexon, the Creative Plus DCT variant. It has all the features that you want, a panoramic sunroof, hill start assist and comes with paddle shifters, too. Nexon's ride is solid; it can handle bad roads very well and keeps the occupants comfortable.
The 1.2-litre turbocharged engine of this Tata car is peppy enough for everyday driving. It's not the most refined, but nothing you can't live with.

I am interested in buying the Tata Nexon petrol automatic and am confused between the AMT and the DCA. Very confusing. Which one is better?

The Tata Nexon petrol is available with a 6-speed AMT (automated manual transmission) and a 7-speed DCA (dual clutch automatic). If you don't mind spending more for the DCA, it is the one to go for. The DCA is a superior gearbox with smoother shifts and quicker responses. The AMT can feel jerky at times, and gearshifts are slower, which takes away from the driving experience.

I am a first-time car buyer and want to purchase a petrol automatic car with good features. I am confused between the Hyundai Venue, Skoda Kylaq, Tata Nexon and Toyota Hyryder. My budget is around ₹15 to 16 lakh. My usage is mostly within the city with limited highway driving, and my monthly running is around 2,000km. Please advise.

If you want a torque converter automatic transmission, the Skoda Kylaq is your best bet. It is powered by a lively 999cc 3-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, paired with a smooth 6-speed AT, with a suspension setup that makes driving the Kylaq fun.

However, if you are open to other automatic transmissions, the Tata Nexon with a dual-clutch automatic can be a good choice. It has a spacious cabin, packed with features, and it is a car very well suited for city driving.

Hi all, I am planning to buy a diesel manual car and am confused between the new Hyundai Venue HX5 and the Tata Nexon Creative variants. My budget is around ₹13-14 lakh. Please suggest which one I should choose.

The Hyundai Venue HX5 is the better pick. It's got the smoother and more refined engine, as well as the easier-to-modulate clutch. There's a more modern and airier vibe to the Venue's interior, too, and cabin quality is superior.

The Tata Nexon Creative does pack in a few more features over a Venue HX5, but the Hyundai does get the nicer touchscreen. A big miss on the HX5 is a rear wiper, though. It's a pity that the Hyundai Venue diesel manual doesn't come in higher-spec HX6 form that would have been the sweet spot in price and features.

Things that set the Nexon apart are its tough build and rugged suspension that can take quite a beating. The Nexon has been around for a while and, despite frequent updates, has started showing its age in the face of new competition.

Of these two, we'd recommend you choose the Hyundai Venue HX5. The Tata Nexon has the slight edge on driving enjoyment with its punchier engine, sharper steering and better-tuned suspension, but in most other areas, the Venue excels.

The HX5 variant is decently well equipped, and the Venue diesel in general is smoother, more refined, better built and of higher interior quality. Plus, Hyundai's aftersales and service are known to offer a better experience than Tata's.

I want to purchase a new any automatic diesel car budget of 13 lacs. My running is approx 1200-1500 Km in a month. 70 % in city and 30% in in highway. Please suggest suitable options for me.

There are only two options that would meet your requirements of a diesel automatic and under Rs 13 lakhs. These are the Mahindra XUV 3XO and the Tata Nexon. It would be nice to know a bit more about your requirements to pinpoint one.

The Tata Nexon is a good option, as fuel efficiency is very important for you, as its efficiency is higher than the 3XO. In our real-world tests, we got an average of 18kpl for the Nexon and 15.5kpl for the Mahindra.

If, however, driving pleasure and interior space are important, then you would be better off in the 3XO. The engine is refined and delivers good performance. Also, the car is spacious from inside, especially at the rear, where you will find more passenger room than in the Nexon.

I want to buy a car. I’m a first-time car buyer, and I’m not sure of the exact budget yet, but I’m thinking about ₹10-12 lakh. Most of my driving will be on weekend trips and some in the city. From what I’ve seen online, I like the Tata Nexon and 3XO. I’ve driven the Nexon a lot and liked it, but I have no reference for the 3XO. I don’t want to buy a Maruti because my father has a Baleno, and I’ve driven that a lot too. I’m looking for a manual car and, as infrastructure is not adequate, I’m not interested in an EV. What car should I buy?

A compact SUV is a good first car to buy. The sub 4-meter footprint makes it easy to manage in crowded streets, and most of the models today offer sufficient space inside and a good level of performance.

Which car you buy really comes down to some specific requirements, since you have already experienced the Tata Nexon and like it, you can safely go ahead and buy it. The car is a good all-rounder; however, if you would like livelier performance and more space for rear passengers, then the Mahindra XUV 3XO is the better option, just bear in mind the mileage will not be as good as the Nexon.

Is it worth upgrading from a Tiago diesel to the Punch facelift turbo petrol, or should I consider the Nexon instead?

Yes, with the Tata Punch Facelift, which is launching on January 13, the sub-compact SUV will finally get a stronger turbo petrol engine option, which has been lacking in the car so far.

As in the Tata Nexon, this will be mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, which means the two cars will have identical powertrains. However, it is likely that, for the same price, you will get a lower-spec Nexon, compared to the Punch.

So, it comes down to your budget and your preference - if you like more features and don't mind a smaller vehicle, you should get the Punch. However, the Nexon is far more spacious - especially in the back seat and boot - and it's more comfortable too. So, if you value that and don't mind skipping a few features, it would be a worthy upgrade to your Tiago diesel.

I want a new petrol car with good safety features and an excellent music system, and I’m confused between the Mahindra 3XO and Tata Nexon. Which one should I choose?

Both the Tata Nexon and Mahindra 3XO are tough-feeling and robust compact SUVs, and both boast 5-star Global NCAP safety ratings. Both models also get branded audio systems, though it's advisable to test them out for your preferences.

Of the two models, it's the Mahindra 3XO that's the more complete package. It's better finished, better equipped and more spacious than the Tata Nexon. What also tips the ratings in favour of the Mahindra is its punchier petrol engine and slicker gearboxes - both manual and automatic.

Where the 3XO loses out is in luggage capacity, offering less room than you'd get in a Nexon.
