I am looking for an automatic SUV under Rs 14 lakh, preferably with a torque-converter or CVT gearbox. The car will primarily be used for city driving, with occasional highway trips and long-distance journeys. I am leaning towards a petrol model rather than an EV, as I feel EV charging infrastructure is still not widely available. My main priorities are mileage and long-term reliability. I have shortlisted the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Skoda Kylaq, Hyundai Venue and Mahindra XUV 3XO.

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Brezza automatic. Your priorities are mileage, reliability and predominantly city driving, and the Brezza lines up perfectly with that brief. The 1.5-litre petrol engine is proven, the 6-speed torque converter automatic is smooth and reliable, and Maruti's service network and low maintenance costs make it a very easy car to own long-term. It is also one of the more fuel-efficient naturally aspirated petrol SUVs in the segment, which matters given your usage pattern. The Skoda Kylaq and Mahindra XUV 3XO are both excellent cars, but they are turbo petrols and will not be as fuel efficient in city conditions. The Hyundai Venue is a good all-rounder, but it comes with a DCT automatic that is nowhere as smooth as a CVT or torque converter. The Brezza is not the most exciting car to drive, but it is the most sensible choice for your requirements.

Hi Autocar Team, I’m looking to replace my current Tata Punch Accomplished Dazzle Sunroof AMT. I’m not very happy with the AMT gearbox and specifically want to move to a smoother automatic for Hyderabad traffic. My hard on-road budget is Rs 15 lakh. The car will mainly be used by my wife and me, along with our kid, so I’m looking for something that offers good safety, comfort, an automatic transmission, and a sunroof. My biggest priority is long-term ownership and reliability. I plan to keep the car for at least 6-8 years, so it should be reasonably easy and affordable to maintain, with good parts availability and decent resale value. Could you please suggest which car and variant you would personally recommend within a Rs 15 lakh on-road budget in Hyderabad? I’m currently considering cars such as the Maruti Brezza, Kia Sonet, Škoda Kylaq, and other compact/mid-size SUVs, but I’m open to better options. If you had Rs 15 lakh as a hard maximum budget and were replacing a Punch AMT, which car would you shortlist and why?

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Brezza ZXi AT. It is the most sensible upgrade from the Tata Punch AMT and fits your priorities perfectly. The Brezza uses a 6-speed torque converter automatic, which is significantly smoother and more refined than the AMT in the Punch, especially in stop-start Hyderabad traffic. It is also one of the most reliable and easy-to-maintain cars in the segment, with excellent parts availability and a strong service network, which is important for a 6-8 year ownership plan. The ZXi variant sits in the sweet spot of the range, offering good safety equipment, a comfortable cabin and the features you are looking for, including a sunroof, without stretching your budget. You could stretch for the ZXi+, which costs about Rs 2 lakh more, but that pushes it outside your Rs 15 lakh budget and we feel the additions aren't worth the extra outlay. This Maruti Suzuki car is also a genuinely comfortable 5-seater with a well-sorted ride and a proven ownership track record. The Skoda Kylaq is a good driver's car, but fuel efficiency can take a huge nosedive if you're not careful; the Kia Sonet is feature-rich, but cramped on space and with a firm ride. The Brezza is not the most exciting car in the segment, but it is the one you are most likely to be happy with after 6-8 years of ownership.

I am looking to upgrade from Venue SX(O) 1.0 Turbo with IMT (2021) to a car with a Torque Converter. I am confused between Skoda Kylaq Prestige Plus and XUV 3XO AX7 1.2 TGDi AT.

Since you're coming from a Venue Turbo IMT and looking for a proper torque converter automatic, the Skoda Kylaq Prestige Plus is the better fit. The Kylaq’s 1.0 TSI paired with the 6-speed torque converter automatic is a proven and reliable combination that delivers a smooth and responsive driving experience, especially in city conditions. The Kylaq also has a more engaging driving character, with a well-balanced chassis and mature road manners. The XUV 3XO AX7 1.2 TGDI AT is a strong alternative, offering a more spacious and premium cabin and a richer feature list at a similar price point. However, the Kylaq’s driving dynamics and the punchy 1.0 TSI engine and torque converter automatic make it the better upgrade from your Venue. The Kylaq also feels like a more natural step up in terms of driving experience, refinement and overall ownership satisfaction.

Hi, I am looking for an automatic car for my dad for 70% travelling on open highways/country roads and 30% in slow moving (not heavy) traffic. with quarterly over 350km of travel. Fuel efficiency is not a concern to me and features as well as cabin toys are not deal brakers. My pure focus is on engine, transmission and reliability. I have shortlisted i20 CVT as the belt drive is smooth, but I am not sure about longer 110kph cruising and overtakes. I have also shortlisted, 3XO TC as the MPFi is convincing but I am not convinced about the service of Mahindra. The car is also a bit bulky for my dad. I have also shortlisted Kylaq automatic as this car is compact but has enough power but I am a bit worried about the 2.0 Skoda/Volkswagen reliability. The nearest ASC is 70kms away, which is the major concern as accessibility worry when i face some issues. Also, I am not sure how the engine will feel while driving in the city because of direct Injection in the long run. Other cars are rejected because of AMT/DCT/Budget/strict petrol requirement.

Go for the Hyundai i20 CVT. Your priorities are reliability, ease of ownership and a stress-free driving experience for your father, and the i20 CVT fits that brief perfectly. The CVT is smooth and predictable, and the naturally aspirated petrol engine is well suited to both city and highway driving. It will cruise at 110 km/h comfortably and overtakes are manageable with a little planning. Hyundai's service network is extensive and ownership is generally hassle-free, which is important given your father's usage pattern. The Mahindra XUV 3XO is a good car with a powerful turbo petrol engine, but it is a larger and heavier car, which may not be ideal for your father. Mahindra's service experience can also be inconsistent depending on location. The Skoda Kylaq is the driver's choice with a strong turbo petrol engine and a smooth torque converter automatic, but the 70 km distance to the nearest service centre is a significant drawback. Skoda's ownership experience is generally good, but service accessibility is a key consideration.Given your requirements, the i20 CVT is the most sensible and reliable choice. It will deliver a smooth, comfortable and hassle-free ownership experience, which is exactly what you are looking for.

As first time buyer, I want to ask which is the safest and most compact SUV? Is Punch the better choice for new drivers between Punch, Exter, 3XO and Kylaq?

Verified
•1w

Go for the Mahindra XUV 3XO. It is the safest compact SUV in your shortlist, and it is also the better choice for a first-time buyer. The 3XO has a 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating, a wide cabin that makes it a genuinely comfortable 5-seater, and a compact footprint that makes it easy to drive and park. It also offers strong value for money with a good feature set and a proven ownership track record. The Tata Punch is a good car for new drivers, but it is a smaller SUV with lesser space, a less powerful engine and doesn't feel as premium as a package. The Hyundai Exter is also a good option, but it is not as spacious or as well-equipped as the 3XO. The Skoda Kylaq is a strong contender for driving enthusiasts, but the 3XO offers a better balance of safety, space and value for a first-time buyer. The 3XO is the most complete package out of all the options you're considering.
