I am a new learner and still not fully confident with my driving lessons. I am looking to buy my first car, which should be safe and within a budget of ₹5 to ₹7 lakh. Can you help me decide which option to go for? Also, I am not keen on Maruti cars as they do not have a good safety rating.

The Tata Punch would make for a good first car for you. Compared to hatchbacks, the high seating will offer you a good view outside, and the compact dimensions will make it easy to maneuver and park, especially if you live in a congested area. Moreover, this Tata car also has a very good ride quality, is well-equipped, and is safe too.

I currently own an i10, which has reached the end of its life. I am looking to upgrade to at least a mini or micro SUV. My budget is ₹6 to ₹10 lakh, with a requirement of at least a 4 or 5-star GNCAP rating. I am open to sedans as well. Please suggest the best cars. However, I am also confused between buying a new car versus a used one or stretching my budget, as I am planning to move abroad in the next 6 to 12 months. I initially thought of buying a used car from trusted online portals, but I am worried about investing additional money in used cars in case they require major repairs.

Your best options for sub-compact SUVs in your budget are the Tata Punch and the Nissan Magnite, both of which have received a 5-star NCAP crash test rating. Of the two, we recommend the Nissan Magnite, as it has recently received a facelift, which has given it more features and a more upmarket cabin. And overall, it is the more spacious of the two, and has the advantage of a turbo-petrol engine option, which also falls in your budget.
As for whether you should buy a used car instead, it's always an advantage, as you will not suffer the same depreciation hit as you would buying a new car, and yes, you can get a vehicle from a segment or two above within the same budget.
Or else you could lower your budget and save some money. As long as you choose a relatively young used car and have it inspected thoroughly before purchase, the repairs should not be major in 6-12 months. Try a trusted used car portal like Spinny, which does thorough vehicle evaluation on its used cars for a bit more peace of mind.

Tata has introduced a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine with the new Sierra. Will Tata replace their existing 3-cylinder petrol engines in the Punch, Altroz, and Nexon with this 4-cylinder NA petrol engine?

The Punch, Altroz and Nexon benefit from a lower tax slab since they fulfil two key requirements - their length is less than 4 meters, and their petrol engine capacity is less than 1200cc.
Even if one of the criteria is not fulfilled, these cars will fall under a higher tax bracket, resulting in a higher price. So, to answer your question, it is highly unlikely that the company will introduce Tata Sierra's 1.5L petrol in these compact cars.

My Wagon R has run 70,000 km in 3 years. I now want to buy a new car. Please suggest a car that offers good mileage and comfort. I am 6 feet tall, and my budget is Rs 10 lakh.

You could look at a Tata Punch CNG, which is a high-riding sub-compact SUV with an excellent driving position. It also feels tough and confident over bad roads.
The other option you must check out is the Hyundai Exter CNG Duo, which is smoother, more refined, and delivers slightly better performance than the Punch.

I live in Mangalore, Karnataka, and drive 70-90 km daily, with about 70% on NH/SH and 30% on bad rural roads (loose laterite soil, broken tracks, and heavy rain for almost half the year). I need a compact vehicle that can handle both city traffic and the challenging rural and monsoon roads. With no preference for fuel type, which specific cars/SUVs should I consider, and why?

Without knowing your budget, it'll be difficult to recommend an ideal car for you. For under Rs 10 lakh, consider the Tata Punch, a tough little car.
If your budget is between Rs 10-15 lakh, you could consider the Maruti Suzuki Jimny 4x4 for its small footprint yet rugged nature.

I am a 61-year-old retired person looking to buy a car for city driving and occasional highway trips. My budget is around ₹6-7 lakh. Mostly, my wife and I will use the vehicle. Safety and comfort are my top priorities. I am open to either a used or a new car. Please suggest suitable options.

The Tata Punch would suit you nicely. The car is safe, and the wide-opening doors and high seating make it easy to get inside, and the seats are reasonably comfy too. 

The only issue is space at the rear is tight, but if this is not an issue for you, the Punch would suit you very well. Also, the car is very easy to drive in the city, and it has good stability out on the highways, too.

I am a senior citizen aged 65 years. I am interested in the Maruti Wagon R. I need your meticulous analysis of the Wagon R and guidance on any other good alternative, with reasons.

The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is a sensible hatchback for city driving. Its high cabin makes getting in and out easy, and also gives good visibility. Cabin space is exceptional for the Wagon R's size, and boot space is very good too. The Wagon R is also easy to drive and easy to park.
If your budget allows, we'd recommend the larger 1.2-litre petrol engine that delivers significantly better performance than the 1.0-litre unit while also scoring well for fuel economy. The manual gearbox is easy enough to use, while the AMT auto is an option to consider if you encounter lots of traffic. 

The Wagon R works well as a city vehicle, but it's not an ideal highway vehicle. Its tall shape and light weight means it doesn't feel as surefooted as a lower riding car would. If you drive frequently on the highway, the Tata Punch is an option you could consider.

I want to buy a manual petrol car up to Rs 8 lakh. I am confused between the Tata Punch Adventure Plus and the Skoda Kylaq base model. My monthly running is around 100 km. Which one is a better value for money?

While both the Tata Punch and the Skoda Kylaq do represent good value for money at this price point, it's for different reasons.
The Skoda Kylaq Classic comes powered by a 115hp, 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with a 6-speed manual gearbox, and that, coupled with its sorted ride and handling, makes it the one to go for if you enjoy driving.
The Tata Punch Adventure, meanwhile, comes better equipped with features such as a 7-inch touchscreen, auto folding outside mirrors, steering-mounted audio controls, drive modes and more, which the Kylaq Classic doesn't get. The Tata Punch, with its 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, will also be more fuel efficient.
