I am 43 years old and currently learning to drive. I am planning to buy a new car. My city usage will be 2-3 times a month, and I will do 4-5 highway trips a year. I have booked the Tata Punch AMT, but I am also considering the new Maruti Suzuki Brezza AMT. Which one would be the better choice for 10-15 years of ownership?

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Brezza AMT. At 43 and just learning to drive, you want a car that is easy to live with, reliable and stress-free for the next 10-15 years. This Maruti Suzuki car is the safer choice here. It is a bigger, more comfortable car with a proven naturally aspirated petrol engine and Maruti’s unmatched service network. The AMT is smooth enough for city use, and the Brezza feels fine on highways. The Tata Punch AMT is a good city car, but the Brezza is the better long-term ownership proposition. It will age better, has a stronger resale value and is simply the more complete car for your usage pattern.

Hello Auto Car Team, I am planning to buy my first car and would appreciate your guidance. My primary usage will be monthly trips to my hometown, covering around 800 km per trip, once or twice a month. Most of the time, the car will be used by two occupants. My budget is around Rs. 10 lakh, although I can stretch it by another Rs. 1 lakh if the additional value is justified. The cars currently on my shortlist are Maruti Suzuki Brezza VXi, Mahindra XUV 3XO MX2 Pro, Honda Amaze VX and Tata Punch Adventure Turbo. My key priorities include good fuel efficiency, safety, comfort for long-distance travel as well as low maintenance and reliability as this will be my first car. Given my requirements and budget, which of these cars would you recommend? Also, if there are any better alternatives that I should consider, please let me know. Thank you for your help.

Given your usage pattern of regular 800 km highway trips with two occupants, your priorities of fuel efficiency, safety, comfort and low maintenance, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza VXi is the most sensible choice from your shortlist. Since a lot of your driving is going to be on the highway, opt for the turbo petrol manual. It has much better overtaking performance than the naturally aspirated version and with a tall sixth gear, fuel efficiency will be good too. It is also a proven, reliable and low-maintenance car with a comfortable ride, good highway stability and a strong service network, which is exactly what you want in a first car that will see long-distance use. The downside is that the turbo doesn't come with an automatic option. The Mahindra XUV 3XO MX2 Pro is the more modern and feature-rich option, however the Brezza still has the edge in terms of long-term reliability. The Honda Amaze VX is a good sedan with a comfortable ride and Honda's reputation for reliability, but given your highway usage and the occasional rough patches you may encounter, the higher ground clearance and more robust nature of the Brezza make it the better fit. The Tata Punch is a good value proposition, but it is a smaller car and not as well roomy as the Brezza.Overall the Brezza VXi remains the most balanced and dependable choice for your requirements.

I am considering buying my first four-wheeler, and my budget is under Rs. 10 lakh. My requirement is mainly city driving, with occasional visits to villages and a few trips each year. Please suggest a family car or SUV that is practical for family use while also catering to occasional trips and village driving. I have explored the Tata Punch, Hyundai Exter, Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Renault Kiger, and Renault Kwid, and now I feel confused about which one to buy. Kindly help me with my dilemma.

For your requirements, from your shortlist, the Renault Kiger is the most sensible choice. Your usage is predominantly city driving with occasional village visits and a few trips a year, which means you need a car that is compact and easy to drive in the city, but also robust enough to handle rough roads and occasional bad patches. As you plan to travel with your family too, space is also important, as well as boot volume for luggage. The Kiger strikes that balance very well. It offers a higher ground clearance than hatchbacks like the Wagon R, which makes it more confidence-inspiring on broken village roads, and its compact dimensions make it easy to manoeuvre and park in the city. It also offers more space than most of the other options in this price range. You also get a choice of naturally aspirated and turbocharged petrol engines, and given that you travel with family and do occasional long drives, we recommend the turbo petrol, which has some additional punch, yet can be fuel efficient when driven carefully. The Wagon R, Exter and Punch are a size down on the Kiger and thus won't be as suitable for your family, while the Nexon and Fronx will require you to settle for a low variant in your budget. The Renault Kiger is the best value for money you can get at this price, and alternatively, for a similar price, you can also look at its sister car - the Nissan Magnite.

Hi Autocar, I'm planning to buy my first automatic car with an on-road budget of around Rs. 12 lakh, and I'm a bit confused between these options: Honda Amaze ZX CVT, Tata Punch Accomplished+ S AMT, Skoda Kylaq Signature AT The car will mostly be used for a mix of city driving and occasional highway trips. A few things about my usage: I'm a first-time driver, so I want something easy to drive, and that helps me build confidence. Right now, the car will be used occasionally, but the usage could increase over the next few years. My parents will also be driving it sometimes, so ease of driving and comfort are important. I'm looking for a reliable car that doesn't give frequent issues and is easy to own. Which of these would you recommend based on my requirements? Also, if I go with the Kylaq, is the Signature+ AT really worth paying around Rs. 2 lakh more than the Signature AT? Are the extra features and overall package worth the premium, or is the Signature AT good enough? Thanks!

Between your picks, the Skoda Kylaq and Honda Amaze are the best bets for your needs. The Amaze CVT is smooth, the car is compact and easy to manoeuvre, and Honda’s reliability and low maintenance costs make it a stress-free ownership experience. It is also a proper automatic gearbox, unlike the AMT in the Punch, which can feel jerky at low speeds. The Kylaq is more fun to drive and has the most premium feeling of the three. The 1.0 TSI engine also offers the most performance, which will be handy on the highway, but will also consume more fuel in the city. Its torque converter automatic is very smooth shifting and makes driving in the city very easy. What also helps is that you sit higher than the Amaze, which will give you a bit more confidence in tight city traffic. The downside is that Skoda’s service network is not as widespread as Honda’s, and upkeep can cost more. As for the variant, the Signature+ AT adds a couple of useful features like a reversing camera and a larger infotainment screen, but it is not worth paying Rs 2 lakh extra over the Signature AT. Between these two, the Amaze ZX CVT is the better fit for your requirements - easy to drive, reliable, comfortable and hassle-free to own.

My budget is around 14 lakhs, and I am confused between the MG Windsor exclusive, the Tata Nexon Empowered 45 and the Tata Punch Empowered S40. Please Suggest.

Verified

Go for the MG Windsor Exclusive. At Rs 14 lakh, it offers the best ownership experience of the three. The Windsor is a genuinely spacious family car with a comfortable ride, a premium cabin and a strong feature set. It feels like a proper step up from your 2018 Nexon, with a more mature driving experience and a much more spacious rear seat. The Nexon Empowered 45 is a good car, but it is essentially an evolution of what you already own, and the Windsor simply feels like a bigger upgrade for the money. The Punch Empowered S40 is a solid value proposition, but it is a smaller car and does not feel as premium or as spacious as the Windsor. The only real drawback with the Windsor is that MG's service network is not as extensive as Tata's, but it is still a well-supported product in most major cities. Overall, the Windsor Exclusive is the best fit for your budget and your upgrade expectations.
