I’m buying my first car and am still learning to drive. My monthly running will be around 500-600 km, with most of my driving in Mumbai city and occasional weekend highway trips. I plan to keep the car for the next 8-10 years. I was initially considering the Hyundai Venue HX 8 Automatic Petrol, but I dropped the plan because it does not offer a panoramic sunroof. Now I’m confused between the Hyundai Creta S(O) and the Kia Seltos HTK(O) 1.5 NA Petrol Automatic. The Creta S(O) is around Rs. 1 lakh cheaper than the Seltos HTK(O), but the additional features offered by the Seltos are tempting. Which one would you recommend for my requirements?

Go for the Kia Seltos IVT. It is based on a newer platform than the Creta and is bigger inside and out. For your usage and ownership plan, it is the sensible choice. The 1.5 naturally aspirated petrol paired with the IVT is smooth, reliable and well suited to city driving, and as you mentioned, the Kia has the extra features you want. While it does cost more, it does give you more for the money. The Creta is also due for a full model change in 2027, so you are buying a car that is closer to the end of its lifecycle, but that is not a deal breaker given Hyundai's strong aftersales support and the fact that the mechanical package is proven and reliable.

Hello Autocar, I'm planning to buy an EV with a budget of around Rs. 20-22 lakh (ex-showroom). Although I can stretch it a bit if it's worth it. The models that I'm currently considering are Tata Sierra Adventure 75, Tata Harrier EV Adventure 65 and Mahindra XEV 9e 59 kWh (base variant). My usage will be around 70% city driving. I also own a 2025 Hyundai Creta Petrol CVT, so I'm looking for an EV that genuinely feels like an upgrade rather than just a different powertrain. Among these, I liked the XEV 9e the most, but I'm a bit concerned about the long-term practicality and battery life of the 59 kWh pack, since it's the smallest battery among the three. Which one would you recommend, and is there any other EV in this price range that I should consider?

Go for the Mahindra XEV 9e 59 kWh. It is the most complete electric car from the ones you're considering and will genuinely feel like an upgrade over your Creta. The Sierra and Harrier EV are good cars, but the XEV 9e feels more premium, more modern and more sorted as an overall package. Going for the smaller 59 kWh battery should not be a concern since it is still a large pack, and Mahindra’s battery management system is well engineered. The car is also more efficient than the Tata EVs, so real-world range is not as far behind as the numbers would suggest. The only reason to stretch to the larger battery is if you regularly do very long highway runs. For your 70% city usage, the 59 kWh pack is more than sufficient. The Sierra EV is the better Tata EV, but the XEV 9e is the better car overall.

Dear friends, I do not currently own a car and am not driving one yet, but my dream is to own a Hyundai Creta. Is this car comfortable for a beginner driver, or should I go for a small and portable car instead?

Verified

The Hyundai Creta is a perfectly fine car for a first-time driver. It is not a large SUV by modern standards, and it is actually quite easy to drive thanks to its light controls, good visibility and comfortable seating position. The automatic versions are easier to live with in city traffic. The only thing to keep in mind is that the Creta is a midsize SUV, so parking in tight spaces will require a bit more attention than a hatchback, but with all the parking aids, it will not be very intimidating once you get used to the dimensions. If your dream is to own this Hyundai car, there is no reason to compromise on a smaller car just because you are a beginner. The key is to take a proper driving course, spend time getting comfortable with the car and start with quieter roads before tackling busy city traffic. The Creta is a well-rounded, comfortable and easy-to-drive SUV that will serve you well for many years. You could also consider waiting for the new-gen Creta expected in the first quarter of 2027.

I am looking to buy a mid-size SUV with a diesel automatic powertrain and a budget of up to Rs. 20 lakh. I am currently confused between the Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos. Could you suggest the best variants, along with any other good options available in the market? I have also heard that the Creta facelift is expected in late 2026 or early 2027. Should I buy the current Creta, or go for the Seltos, which was launched 5-6 months ago? I currently own a 2017 Hyundai Creta Diesel Automatic and am looking for a worthwhile upgrade.

If you want a new car immediately, go for the Kia Seltos diesel automatic. Since you already own a 2017 Creta diesel automatic, the Seltos will feel like a proper upgrade with a more premium cabin, better feature set and a fresher overall package. The Seltos and Creta share the same 1.5 diesel engine and 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox, so the driving experience will be familiar, but the Seltos feels more upmarket and better finished inside. The Hyundai Creta is still a very good car, but with a new generation expected early 2027, it is not the best time to buy one. The Seltos was updated just a few months ago, so you are getting a much newer product. Of course, if you can wait, the new Creta will feature everything that the Seltos offers, and compared to the outgoing version, it'll feel far more modern.

I am looking to upgrade from my Hyundai Creta to a 7-seater SUV. My annual running is only around 6,000 km, and my budget is up to Rs. 25 lakh. Is the Hyundai Alcazar a good option for my usage? I have also considered the Mahindra XUV 7XO and Tata Safari, but I am concerned about their relatively low fuel efficiency. Which 7-seater SUV would you recommend?

Verified
1w

With a yearly running of just 6,000km, petrol is the sensible choice, and the Hyundai Alcazar is a good option. It is a comfortable, easy-to-drive family SUV with a hassle-free ownership experience, and the 1.5 turbo petrol engine paired with the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic is powerful enough and relatively efficient too. Plus, since you're coming from a Creta, you'll be familiar with the Hyundai network and could even ask for a loyalty discount. However, the Alcazar’s third row is not as spacious as some larger cars in the segment, so if you genuinely need a proper 7-seater, it may not be the ideal solution. What's more, if your Creta is the 2020 or newer model, you'll find the Alcazar perhaps a little too familiar on the inside. The Mahindra XUV 7XO, Tata Safari and MG Hector Plus are good options that offer more space. However, as you have noted, they're not fuel efficient at all, and moreover, in your budget, you will only get a low to mid-spec variant, whereas you will get a fully-loaded Alcazar. Another option to consider, though not an SUV, is the Kia Carens Clavis. Its MPV shape is more space-efficient, and you actually get more passenger and luggage room than the Alcazar, with the same efficient engines, for around the same price.
