Hi, Need to upgrade from my 16 year old Ritz which served decent but started giving frequent issues post 12 years and 100000 kms. Prefer to have automatic so that my wife a new learner too can drive when needed, with decent space for 4 Adults and 1 kid during outstation trips with well aged parents. I'm around 40+ now. Ease for getting in n out is a must especially for aged parents. However 80% of the time it be used for lone commuting to office and back max 12kms or less one-way in mumbai traffic. Don't fancy features other than adjustable headrests even for rear, decent AC, basic music system... Don't think I use anything more. Ps we used to love seating of ritz found its angles and width apt for senior citizens. Budget around 8 onroad mumbai. Kindly suggest.

Unfortunately, at your budget of Rs 8 lakh on road, few cars will feel like a significant upgrade to your Maruti Ritz, even though it is 12 years old. This is also because you are looking for an automatic, and while you are happy with having only basic features in your car, the automatic gearbox is usually tied to mid- to high-level variants in most vehicles. However, here are some options, like the Hyundai Exter and the recently facelifted Tata Punch that should meet your needs within your budget. Both also use a tall-boy design which allows for easy ingress and egress, and the Punch has the added advantage of doors that open a full 90 degrees, helping further.

However, of the two, we would recommend the Hyundai Exter, as it is slightly wider in the rear seat, and also because it has the smoother and more efficient petrol engine with the smoother AMT gearbox of the two.

I brought my Nexon XZA+ AMT petrol car from Spinny, but the mileage is lower than 7 in the city. How to improve mileage? It was already serviced at the Tata center yet it can't understand the issue with low mileage. Is there any repair or maintenance needed?

Poor fuel efficiency can be due to several factors. If the service center has inspected the vehicle and cleared it for being fit, chances are that it could be due to driving conditions. Turbo-petrol engines are very sensitive to driving style, and constant stop-go conditions can take a toll on efficiency. Hence, if your usage is primarily in bumper-to-bumper traffic, or if your travel distances are limited to very short distances, less than 4km, the low fuel efficiency is justified.
Additionally, you could consider bumping up your tyre pressures slightly for lesser rolling resistance. Also, ensure your Nexon is serviced regularly, too. Also, for more tips, read our article on 7 ways to get better fuel economy from your car.

I am confused about my car purchase. I was initially fixed on the Grand Vitara due to its mileage and service network, but recent additions to the market like the Seltos and Duster have made me reconsider. Mileage is my main priority, but better features would be a bonus. I mainly travel 300-400 km per month. My current Tata Altroz delivers low mileage.

If you are already fixed on the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara but want more features, then we would suggest going for the Maruti Suzuki Victoris. It is basically the same car and gets the same super-efficient hybrid powertrain as the Vitara, but more importantly, it comes loaded with extra features, such as a bigger touchscreen infotainment system, a powered tailgate, and Level 2 ADAS as well. Maruti Suzuki has also improved the interior quality, and the good thing is that the pricing is almost the same, which makes the Victoris a great value.
Considering your running is not that high, at under 500 km per month, you can also consider a car with slightly lower mileage, since the overall impact on your fuel bills won’t be significant. It will roughly be in the region of Rs 1500-1800 per month, and if you are okay with that, then you can look at the Tata Sierra Turbo petrol AT as well. The Sierra gives you a big car feel, is loaded with features, and is more spacious and comfortable than the Victoris.
Another car we would suggest is the new Kia Seltos. It is very well priced for the features it offers, feels really premium on the inside, and both the petrol engines are potent and proven powertrains.
We have yet to drive the new Renault Duster, but it does look like a promising product if priced right. It will also be offered with an efficient hybrid powertrain, which is expected to go on sale around Diwali this year. So if you are willing to wait, that is another option worth exploring.

I have been driving a Ciaz petrol since 2018, and my running is very low - in the last 7 years, it has been less than 40,000 km. I like the Tata Sierra and am wondering whether I should wait two years to buy a new car or buy a new vehicle now. My budget is ₹18 lakhs. Should I continue with my old car?

If your current car is running well and there are no mechanical concerns, it makes sense to hold on to it for another two years. However, if you are keen on upgrading, the engine to opt for in the Tata Sierra is the 1.5-litre turbo petrol. But for that, you will have to stretch your budget to over 20 lakhs.

Waiting for a couple of more years might work in your favour, as by then more new products would have entered the market, giving you wider options to choose from.

Hi, I travel on the highway every weekend, around 200 km each way, and also commute to the office daily in heavy traffic, around 30 km each way. I am looking for an EV option with a budget of up to Rs 15 lakh. Kindly suggest.

Since you are looking for an electric car, we would recommend the Tata Nexon EV. It is a proven EV with sorted dynamics, excellent ride quality and a range of 345km on the highway and 355km in the city with real-world driving conditions.
Within your budget, you can opt for the Fearless 45 variant, which includes LED headlamps, keyless entry and go, automatic climate control, rear AC vents, drive modes, and more. It offers a well-appointed cabin and has the right dimensions for city use as well.

I am planning to buy a new petrol car for a family of 3 adults and 2 children. I am confused between the Hyundai Venue HX10, Tata Nexon Fearless Plus with ADAS, and Mahindra 3XO AX7L. I want fully loaded features. I live in a village, but the road conditions are good. Second-row comfort is my primary concern. Which is the best choice? Any other suggestions in the same segment?

The Mahindra XUV 3XO is a good option as it is spacious, offers a comfortable second row, and the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine is punchy and enjoyable to drive. The 3XO also gets a long list of features, including a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree camera, and a 10.1-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The Tata Nexon is another good option. It is not as spacious as the 3XO, but it is still comfortable and has a good amount of features. The Venue is the newest car in the segment, and it does feel like one, too. It also gets a larger touchscreen and a bit more modern interior, but overall, the 3XO will fit your needs the best. The rear seat is spacious and more comfortable, the engine is more responsive, and it is loaded with features, especially in the top variants.

I want to buy a petrol car below Rs 7-8 lakh for about 5,000 km of running per annum. Please suggest a model. I do not want to buy Maruti, MG, Mahindra, Honda, Nissan, Skoda, Volkswagen, Kia, or any Chinese-made car.

With Maruti out, you have limited options in this budget, and you will have to compromise on either space or features. Nevertheless, you can consider either the Tata Punch 1.2 Petrol or the Hyundai Exter 1.2 petrol AMT.
The Tata Punch was updated recently, so you get a fresh-looking car with updated interiors. You can opt for the Tata Punch Pure+ variant, which comes with an 8-inch touchscreen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, cruise control, and more. It also offers a tough feel and has one of the better suspension setups in the segment. In case you want to choose automatic, opt for the Hyundai Exter. It has one of the smoothest AMTs and comes with more or less the same features as Punch.

I currently own a 2010 Hyundai i20 petrol and want to upgrade to a new automatic car with a budget of ₹15 lakh (on-road). My usage is 50% city + 50% highway, with monthly running of ~1200–1500 km. It’s mainly for a family of 3, but sometimes 5-6 people during outings. I’m confused between petrol, diesel, and CNG. With diesel, I am worried about maintenance and city usage. CNG has good running costs, but there are long queues on weekends. My priorities are fuel efficiency, low maintenance, good safety, and long-term reliability. Based on this usage, which fuel type and automatic transmission would you recommend, and what safety aspects (airbags, build quality, ratings) should I not compromise on?

Since your running is high, it would be a choice between CNG and diesel. The Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV 3XO are both available with a diesel engine, but with a less-impressive AMT gearbox.
The Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet also get a diesel engine mated to a proper torque converter automatic, but in the Rs 15 lakh budget, you can only get the lower-spec version of the two that misses out on features. Between these four, we would recommend the Venue since it is a newer SUV with a comfy ride and a smoother automatic gearbox.
However, if you want a car for six passengers, you need to look at manual options. The Kia Carens Clavis is available with a diesel manual option that is spacious for six/seven, and the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga with a CNG and a 5-speed manual gearbox.

My key requirements are: a 5-seater petrol car, good boot space, 4m+ length, classy interiors, and a budget under ₹25 lakh. Which SUV would be best for me among the Seltos, Sierra, Victoris, or Duster?

From your shortlist, the Renault Duster and Maruti Suzuki Victoris are not as spacious as the Sierra and Seltos, and hence, comfort for five passengers will be compromised. Plus, the Tata Sierra and Seltos have bigger boots too, so based on your basic requirements, we can narrow your choice down to these two SUVs.
Between the Sierra and Seltos, the Kia Seltos is a well-engineered and safe choice but if you want a bit more class, we feel the Sierra, with its stunning design and styling, and well-appointed interiors with a three-screen display, will pull at your heartstrings that much harder.

My monthly running is around 1,500 km, mainly on highways, and I want a car with an automatic transmission. Should I choose petrol or diesel? Also, please suggest a suitable vehicle within a ₹15 lakh budget.

Since most of your running is on the highways, a diesel SUV would be a good choice. Also, a manual gearbox will be good enough for the highways and will offer a better driving experience and efficiency.

The Tata Nexon with the 1.5-litre diesel engine offers strong performance and good efficiency. It is also quite practical with a large boot and a fantastic ride quality that is segment-best. In your budget, you can get the top-spec Fearless+ trim that gets a well-packed cabin with a lot of features.
