Hector Tomahawk or Clavis SR HTX?

MG, or Morris Garages, is a British brand now owned by China's SAIC Motor. In India, it's sold through JSW MG Motor India, and the first MG car here was the Hector, launched in 2019. If we at Autocar India had to sum up MG cars in one line, it would be this: strong on value and features, not on driving involvement. Time and again in our reviews, models like the Astor and Hector get called “well worth shortlisting” or a “compelling choice” for their cabins, space, and equipment, rarely for how they drive.
MG has also built genuine experience with EVs, more than most brands selling in India, 6 of its 10 current models are electric, running from the Rs 7.80 lakh Comet to the Rs 82.50 lakh Cyberster. Like with any brand, ownership experience can vary a bit by model, so it's worth matching the right MG to your actual usage, which is exactly what the table below is for.
Requirement | Autocar India Recommendation | Why |
The cheapest MG EV | Comet | As per us at Autocar India, this suits short, city-only trips best. Comet is also better than some rivals like Tiago EV in terms of manoeuvrability |
An affordable feature-loaded SUV | Astor | It is a good option in terms of cabin quality and tech over dynamics |
A spacious family SUV that offers comfort over driving fun | Hector | We consider it a spacious, comfortable SUV and a compelling choice for buyers who value space and comfort over engagement. The car is also available with a diesel engine that’s specifically suited to highway driving |
An EV for family comfort | Windsor | As per us, it is a very spacious, comfortable family car for short city runs. For intercity use, we would recommend the larger 52.9kWh Pro battery, as the standard version’s real-world range is closer to 308km |
A 3-row EV SUV with the newest tech | Hector Tomahawk EV | We consider it a strong option for buyers who prefer a simpler dashboard than the triple-screen setup in rivals like the Mahindra XEV 9e. And, as it has been recently launched, it is equipped with the newest tech. |
A 3-row SUV that I can take on longer trips without being worried about range | Hector Tomahawk PHEV | The PHEV is the better pick for genuine long-distance driving. It offers a combined range of over 1,100km, with no range anxiety on longer trips, unlike the EV version |
An electric SUV for daily commutes | ZS EV | As per us at Autocar India, the ZS EV remains a strong pick for genuinely highway-heavy use, thanks to its range and ride comfort, especially with current discounts improving the value. Do keep resale value in mind though, long-term owners have seen real depreciation over a few years |
A premium 3-row SUV with some off-road ability | Majestor | The Majestor is a strong pick if you want size, off-road hardware, and a properly loaded cabin. We have scored it 8/10 for exactly that |
A sporty electric sports car. No budget constraint | Cyberster | As per us at Autocar India, it is genuinely quick, with a 0-100kph time of 3.2 seconds in our testing. By our numbers, it is even quicker than the BMW Z4 M40i |
Chauffeur-driven comfort for the family | M9 | As per us, the M9 works best for city and short-trip chauffeur duty. Its real-world range runs closer to 300km against a claimed 548km, so a longer intercity trip needs more charging planning, while around town you still get a refined, low-cost, silent ride from the electric powertrain |
There are 12 MG cars in India today, 10 you can buy right now and 2 upcoming. The MG car price in India starts at Rs 7.80 lakh and goes up to Rs 82.50 lakh. The Hector Tomahawk EV and PHEV are MG's latest cars, and the Hector remains its most recognisable nameplate. Two more launches are due soon: the IM6 electric SUV and a new-generation Astor.

Hi, I am planning to buy an EV with an on-road price within ₹20 lakhs. Can I consider the ZS EV? My daily commute is around 50-60 km, including 30-35 km of highway driving, with the rest being city driving. I need a spacious car with a good interior. I don’t like the Curvv or Windsor designs. I currently use a Nexon petrol, which I like.
I want to buy my first car in 2027, and I am yet to learn how to drive. My daily commute is around 25 km in the city, with occasional highway trips. I am considering an EV within a budget of Rs. 15-18 lakh. What are my best options?
Hi Autocar Team, I own a Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara AT (non-hybrid) and spend around Rs. 12,000-14,000 per month on petrol. Its city mileage has dropped from around 13 kmpl to 10 kmpl. I also have solar panels at home, so EV charging would be almost free or cost a maximum of Rs. 3-4 per unit. I am confused about whether I should replace the Grand Vitara with an EV or keep it and buy a Tata Tiago EV for daily city use. Am I thinking too much about fuel savings? Should I simply keep the Grand Vitara and avoid buying a second car altogether? I would like to hear from people who have been in a similar situation. What makes more financial sense in the long run?
Hi Autocar Team, I am currently driving a 2014 Honda City diesel and am looking to replace it with an EV. A few options I have in mind are the Mahindra BE 6 Pack One, Tata Sierra Pure 63 kWh, and MG Windsor EV. My budget is under Rs. 20 lakh. I would appreciate your suggestions and recommendations.

A very very good car , having all modern features. Suitable for all terrain drive and it's interior always have added extra energy to all it's seater. Mileage perspective is more than expectations and it is a good relief for customer. But it's higher model loaded with all , is lack of mat and mud flap, put the the customer in gusty mood as there's no scope of to make it fullfill from out side and ultimately make the new car filthy in rainy season.

Solid technology, it has plenty of features compared with other car like tata, hyundai , mahindra and toyota cars, best in class. It's a introductory price. It's beats in all parameters like length, width and height. Colours are dominating. PHEV will rock the automobile industry.

The car looks great. I think it is a real rival to the Fortuner. The overall dimensions and size of this SUV give it a muscular appearance.

After driving, I felt the ADAS phantom braking issue needs to be fixed immediately with a mandatory software upgrade.

Good electric city driving car. Better than 2 wheeler. But still costly to purchase.

When I was a new driver with our MG Astor CVT in Chennai, it returned only 7-8 kmpl. However, my dad managed to get better efficiency of 10 kmpl in the city by adapting to how the CVT works, without compromising speed. You really need to adapt to CVTs for better mileage.
