We don't like
Minimal cabin storage
Counter-intuitive dials
The Z4’s roadster vibe remains, though the long-bonnet-short-rear stance is less pronounced. Now based on BMW’s CLAR platform, the Z4 ditches curves for angular styling and swaps the hardtop for a fabric roof. The kidney grille now has a diamond mesh, and the sharp headlights, creased bonnet and angular bumper lend aggression. Side-on, it still looks sporty, aided by the contrasting black vertical vent. The taut soft top saves weight and lowers the centre of gravity. At the rear, the aggressive bumper and slender taillights complete the look.
7
The cabin is tight but sporty. The switch from twin dials to a digital screen isn’t great—the new elliptical gauges lack clarity, and in Sport mode, needles disappear. Still, the dashboard angles toward the driver, and the comfy bucket seats enhance the experience. Driving feels special but visibility suffers due to the low-set seats and narrow windshield. Space is just adequate; larger occupants may feel cramped. Storage is limited, but there’s a cargo net behind the seats and a 281-litre boot, unaffected by the roof but partially eaten by the space-saver spare.
6
The M40i' powered by a 340hp in-line 6 cylinder mated to an 8-speed auto box and has a rear-wheel drive setup. The 3.0-litre engine sounds great, responds quickly and pulls cleanly from 1,700rpm. It feels smooth and strong throughout the rev range, hitting 0–100kph in 4.8sec. Power delivery is linear and always available, making overtaking easy.
8
The claimed WLTP figure is 11.49kpl, though expect single-digit returns in real-world conditions.
6
Ride is lumpy on broken roads but never harsh. Though cornering is enjoyable with good grip, the steering lacks feel and uniformity. It’s not very agile either —more cruiser than sharp handler.
8
Build quality is excellent. Features include HUD, twin-zone climate control, auto parking and wireless charging—though many are optional. The intuitive 10.25-inch iDrive system with rotary controller remains a highlight.
8
The Z4 is more cruiser than corner-carver, but it looks great, is fun to drive, and the M40i engine is simply superb. For a fun automobile this one ranks high.
