BMW X1 expert review
The BMW X1 carries a refreshed design that looks cleaner and more modern than its predecessor. Its proportions are compact yet confident, with a broader grille flanked by slimmer headlamps and neatly integrated bumpers that give it a composed road presence. The roofline slopes gently toward the rear, and strong shoulder lines enhance visual breadth without appearing busy.
Engineering stays true to the X1’s all-round character. Its platform and chassis are tuned for an engaging driving experience with everyday usability rather than outright sportiness. Ground clearance and ride height suit both city use and occasional rough patches that Indian roads often present.

Inside, the revised cabin feels upscale and purposeful without being extravagant. Quality materials are used across the dash and door trims, and switchgear feels solid and intuitive. The driver-oriented cockpit puts key controls within easy reach.
Front seats are supportive for long stints and offer adequate adjustments. Rear seat space is generous for this segment, allowing adults to sit comfortably with good knee room. Boot space is large practical for given capacity of 476 liters for everyday use and suits weekend luggage for small families. Visibility is good all around, further aiding confidence in city and highway driving.

The X1 is powered by BMW’s efficient and refined 2.0-litre diesel engine producing 150 hp and 360 Nm paired with a twin clutch automatic gearbox. X1 also gets a 1.5 litre petrol engine paired with same twin clutch gearbox.
The diesel engine delivers linear, responsive acceleration. While not designed to thrill, it provides confident progress for city and highway use, with strong mid-range torque helping in overtakes and cruising. Refinement is high, with minimal vibration, and the powertrain remains composed even under load.
Noise insulation is effective at moderate speeds. Wind and road noise are present on rough surfaces but don’t intrude unduly at regular driving speeds. The overall feel is that the powertrain and cabin match the X1’s all-round character more than a purely sporty intent.

X1 delivers good efficiency figure, around 16 to 20 kmpl in mixed city and highway.

The X1’s ride quality is a key strength. Suspension compliance is tuned to absorb typical urban imperfections and broken surfaces, delivering a composed feel over most Indian roads. It does not punish occupants over rough patches, and longer highway stretches feel confident and settled.
Handling is secure rather than downright sporty. Steering is well weighted and offers a good sense of direction, yet the X1’s focus is on composed stability over sharp dynamics. Body roll is controlled giving confidence on twisty roads and in unstable surfaces.
7
The X1 comes with a strong tech stack for its class. A large central touchscreen with connected car features anchors the dashboard, supported by a digital instrument cluster that is clear and easy to read. Comfort features include multi-zone climate control, premium seats and ample connectivity options.
Safety equipment is robust with multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, stability control and traction aids. Parking sensors and camera systems round out a complete package for urban and highway users alike.
7
Priced in the premium compact-SUV bracket, the X1 makes sense for buyers seeking a balanced package rather than extreme sportiness or off-road ability. Its combination of engine refinement, everyday usability, composed ride and premium cabin quality positions it as a capable all-rounder in its segment.
It may not excite those wanting pure dynamic flair, but as a comfortable and practical premium SUV with enough performance and tech for everyday driving, the X1 delivers a very competitive proposition
