BMW X1 expert review
7.0
The BMW X1 carries a refreshed design that looks cleaner and more modern than its predecessor. Its proportions are compact yet confident, with a broader grille flanked by slimmer headlamps and neatly integrated bumpers that give it a composed road presence. The roofline slopes gently toward the rear, and strong shoulder lines enhance visual breadth without appearing busy.
Engineering stays true to the X1’s all-round character. Its platform and chassis are tuned for an engaging driving experience with everyday usability rather than outright sportiness. Ground clearance and ride height suit both city use and occasional rough patches that Indian roads often present.
7.0
Inside, the revised cabin feels upscale and purposeful without being extravagant. Quality materials are used across the dash and door trims, and switchgear feels solid and intuitive. The driver-oriented cockpit puts key controls within easy reach.
Front seats are supportive for long stints and offer adequate adjustments. Rear seat space is generous for this segment, allowing adults to sit comfortably with good knee room. Boot space is large practical for given capacity of 476 liters for everyday use and suits weekend luggage for small families. Visibility is good all around, further aiding confidence in city and highway driving.
6.0
The X1 is powered by BMW’s efficient and refined 2.0-litre diesel engine producing 150 hp and 360 Nm paired with a twin clutch automatic gearbox. X1 also gets a 1.5 litre petrol engine paired with same twin clutch gearbox.
The diesel engine delivers linear, responsive acceleration. While not designed to thrill, it provides confident progress for city and highway use, with strong mid-range torque helping in overtakes and cruising. Refinement is high, with minimal vibration, and the powertrain remains composed even under load.
Noise insulation is effective at moderate speeds. Wind and road noise are present on rough surfaces but don’t intrude unduly at regular driving speeds. The overall feel is that the powertrain and cabin match the X1’s all-round character more than a purely sporty intent.
8.0
X1 delivers good efficiency figure, around 16 to 20 kmpl in mixed city and highway.
7.0
The X1’s ride quality is a key strength. Suspension compliance is tuned to absorb typical urban imperfections and broken surfaces, delivering a composed feel over most Indian roads. It does not punish occupants over rough patches, and longer highway stretches feel confident and settled.
Handling is secure rather than downright sporty. Steering is well weighted and offers a good sense of direction, yet the X1’s focus is on composed stability over sharp dynamics. Body roll is controlled giving confidence on twisty roads and in unstable surfaces.
7.0
The X1 comes with a strong tech stack for its class. A large central touchscreen with connected car features anchors the dashboard, supported by a digital instrument cluster that is clear and easy to read. Comfort features include multi-zone climate control, premium seats and ample connectivity options.
Safety equipment is robust with multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, stability control and traction aids. Parking sensors and camera systems round out a complete package for urban and highway users alike.
8.0
Priced in the premium compact-SUV bracket, the X1 makes sense for buyers seeking a balanced package rather than extreme sportiness or off-road ability. Its combination of engine refinement, everyday usability, composed ride and premium cabin quality positions it as a capable all-rounder in its segment.
It may not excite those wanting pure dynamic flair, but as a comfortable and practical premium SUV with enough performance and tech for everyday driving, the X1 delivers a very competitive proposition

•3dI want to buy a sedan with an average annual running of around 5,000 km, including long-distance drive. My budget is under Rs. 50 lakh. Please suggest a suitable option. I am looking for a replacement for my X1 and would like something that is equally good or better.

Autocar India
There aren't many sedans left in the market, especially at that price range, but with your low yearly use, and a budget of Rs 50 lakh cap, the Audi A4 is the right fit. It feels just as solid and quiet as your BMW X1, but with a comfier ride and a quieter cabin on highways. With your usage, a petrol engine's running costs should be palatable, and the A4’s seats and sound insulation make long drives easy. It is also easy to drive in the city, with light controls and good all-around visibility for a sedan. Alternatively, the Toyota Camry - though it doesn't have a luxury badge - is among the best all-rounders for the money, offering space, comfort, mileage and tech on par with the best. Two things to note coming from the X1: you sit lower, so the view of the road is not as high, and speed breakers need a bit more care than in your old, taller car. If you want to stay in the BMW family and enjoy a sportier feel, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is also within budget. It is fun and feels premium, but the back seat is less spacious, the engine is less powerful, and the ride is firmer than the A4. If you are open to an EV and have home charging, the BYD Seal brings strong performance and a very premium cabin under Rs 50 lakh.

•1wI currently own an Audi A4 Premium Plus Petrol and have been using it for the last three years. The car has now crossed the 50,000 km mark. I am now confused about whether I should continue using the same car for a few more years or upgrade to a newer German luxury SUV within a budget of around ₹60-65 lakh.

Autocar India
With 50,000km covered in 3 years, the smarter move is to keep your Audi A4 for another couple of years unless you clearly need a taller car for rough roads or easier entry. At this age and mileage, a well-serviced and carefully driven A4 still has plenty of life. It is quiet and smooth on highways, and you avoid another big hit in value right now.The other issue is that, on a budget of Rs 60-65 lakh, your only available SUV options from the German luxury brands are compact SUVs like the BMW X1, Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA, which will feel like a downgrade from your A4 in terms of size and space. You will have to up your budget by at least Rs 10 lakh to move into the next segment of luxury SUVs. Better alternatives, if you don't mind a non-luxury badge, are the Skoda Kodiaq and Volkswagen Tayron. They offer similar quality levels to their more luxurious counterparts, as well as equitable levels of comfort and refinement. They even use the same EA888 2.0-litre petrol engine as your A4. What's more, for much less money, you get far more space and an even longer list of features. You sacrifice some snob value, but you get a more rounded product.
Dr Ashish lashkari
•3wHello sir, my name is Dr. Ashish Lashkari, and despite being in the healthcare industry, my passion for automobiles is no less than my profession. I currently drive a Jeep Compass Petrol Automatic, which I purchased in 2018 and have driven around 85,000 km since then. Now, I want to upgrade to something better, and my options are a used Mercedes, a BMW, or the new Mahindra XEV 9e. My usage is around 25% city driving and 75% highway driving with family. Petrol is no longer my preferred choice, as the poor fuel efficiency of the Jeep has been quite frustrating. Please suggest what would be the best option for me. Thank you so much in advance.

Autocar India
If you are looking for a good used luxury car, check out the Mercedes GLA or the BMW X1. Stick with the current generation models and look for the one that is around 4 to 5 years old. You can consider buying from organized pre owned car sellers like Spinny. You may pay a bit more than the open market but you will get cars that are thoroughly checked and with warranty too. If you are looking at the Mahindra XEV 9E, make sure you have a provision to charge it at home or your place of work as relying solely on the public network isn't really feasible. Also, if your highway runs are more than 350 odd kms and involve mountain roads, you might have to stop for a charge too. So make sure your route has plenty of charging options.

•9wI want to buy a pre-owned car with a budget of Rs. 45 lakh. My current options are a BMW 520d Luxury Line with around 50,000km on the odometer, a BMW X1 18d, and a Mercedes-Benz C200, both with around 30,000km driven. I belong to a joint family and currently own two Skoda Laura 1.9 TDI models (one PD automatic and the other DI manual). The new car will mainly serve as a family car and will also be used for highway trips at least twice a month. I am looking for an executive diesel sedan or a cheaper version of the Kodiaq and Tayron

Autocar India
Go for the BMW 520d Luxury Line with 50,000 km; for your joint-family highway runs, it gives the roomiest rear seat, best long-distance comfort, and relaxed diesel torque. It will feel like a fitting upgrade to your Laura TDIs, and sadly there are no more diesel executive sedans available now, so it's something worth getting while you still can. While the Kodiaq and Tayron are capable in their own right, they can't quite replicate the same solidity of a previous-generation 5-series and given its intended use as a long-distance family car, the fuel bills of these large petrol SUVs will be astronomical. Of the other used cars, the X1 is simply too small and the C-Class simply won't feel as premium or roomy as the 5 Series; notably in the rear seat. 50,000km is not a huge amount for a used car, provided it has been well taken care of, and the 5-series' boot is large and well shaped too.

•11wHi, I am planning to purchase a new car within a budget of ₹50-60 lakh. I really like the Audi A4, but I am concerned about its ground clearance of around 165 mm, which may be slightly low for Indian road conditions. I have also looked at the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe and the Mercedes-Benz A-Class Limousine. Could you suggest other cars in this price range that I should consider? I am mainly looking for a good value-for-money luxury car with strong features and overall ownership value.

Autocar India
All the cars you have shortlisted, being sedans, have similar ground clearance, and for all practical purposes, the Audi A4 is no worse off than the other two. In fact, in our testing, it was the Mercedes-Benz A-Class limousine that required the most care over speed breakers. If ground clearance is a high priority, consider an SUV like the Mercedes GLA, Audi Q3 or BMW X1. However, if you want to stick with a sedan, the Audi A4 is the most value for money. Not only is it larger and more spacious than the others, it also has the most comfortable suspension. What's more, its 190hp, 2.0-litre turbo petrol is larger and more powerful than the engines on offer in the 2 Series and A-Class, and the most refined among them too. Given your budget, however, you could even consider an Audi A6; check if your local Audi dealer is offering any discounts, and it could fit within the outer limits of your budget.

•14wHello, I want to convert my BMW X1 petrol model (2011) into an electric vehicle. Please suggest the best EV conversion kit and a reliable company that can carry out the installation. Thanks.

Autocar India
Converting a petrol car to an electric one is a complex process that requires a lot of engineering and expertise, and it will be very expensive to do so. It is not as simple as just swapping out the engine for an electric motor. The process involves removing the engine, fuel tank, exhaust system, and other components and replacing them with an electric motor, batteries, and other components. Even after all this, the car's wiring, suspension, and other systems need to be modified to work with and accommodate the new powertrain.Basically its as good as re-engineering the entire car, and frankly, no one can do this reliably at this point. Thus, we would not recommend a conversion, especially so on a car that is complex and advanced like the BMW X1. Plus, there is also the legality of the car to consider, as the registration details would not match. You should trade in your X1 for the new iX1, as BMW will certainly have some exchange offers to make.

•15wI want to buy a premium 5- or 7-seater, and my budget is around 50 lakhs. I am open to both EVs and ICE vehicles. Though I have thoroughly considered the BYD Sealion 7 as one of the best picks, I would love to know what other premium cars I could get at this price.

Autocar India
There are quite a few types of vehicles available within your budget, and it comes down to what you specifically want and like in your new car. SUVs like the BMW X1 and the iX1, or a three-row version like the Volkswagen Tayron. You can also look at a sedan like the Toyota Camry, which is comfortable inside and offers a strong hybrid powertrain. However, if you are liking the BYD Sealion 7, we would say go ahead with it as it offers a very differentiated appeal with a modern, tech laden interior that's high on quality. The electric powertrain calibration is also very good, and it offers a smooth, strong and progressive drive experience.

•18wI want to upgrade to an SUV and am confused between the Jeep Meridian, Skoda Kodiaq, and BMW X1. Should I choose one of these models or consider some other car?

Autocar India
Each of these three SUVs offers something different and also costs hugely different amounts - each one represents an increase of almost Rs 10 lakh from the other. The BMW X1 is the one to go for if you simply must have a luxury badge, but for the hefty price you pay, it is not very spacious, powerful or well-equipped. At the other end, the Jeep Meridian is a great value for money, and offers an upmarket cabin, a tough chassis with some off-roading ability, and decent badge value. However, its diesel engine is gruff, and space is not immense. The Skoda Kodiaq strikes the best balance of luxury, space, practicality, refinement and value for money - and now comes in 5- or 7-seat layouts. This should be the SUV you pick, though note that, given it is a large SUV with a turbocharged petrol engine, fuel bills can get quite high.

•26wI’m considering whether to buy a used car or a new car after driving my current vehicle for 10 more years. I’m thinking about getting a BMW or Audi hatchback in good condition. What are your thoughts?

Autocar India
You will not find many used BMW and Audi cars (hatchbacks) in India because very few were ever sold.BMW did offer the 1 Series hatchback for a short time, but the numbers were still limited.Instead, it’s better to explore their small SUVs like the Audi Q3 and the BMW X1. If you are open to Mercedes-Benz cars, you can also check the A-Class or B-Class hatchbacks, though these too are rare, or consider the Mercedes GLA. When buying a premium used car, though, make sure you buy from the brand itself, as they all have an approved used program. You can also buy one from a very reputable reseller, and if things go wrong, it can be very expensive to fix.

•26wI am looking to replace my 2021 Tucson. My current usage is not more than 1,000 km a month, mostly on the highway. My budget is ₹50-60 lakh, and I have shortlisted the Mercedes-Benz GLA, BMW X1, and Audi Q3. Looking for your guidance.

Autocar India
We'd recommend you narrow down your options to the Mercedes GLA 220d and Q3, both of which have strong powertrains and are a touch nicer to drive than the BMW X1.Between the two, the Mercedes-Benz car has a more well-appointed cabin and a spacious interior. The Audi Q3's cabin is also high on quality, although it lacks flair. Where the Q3 shines is the ride comfort. Go for the Mercedes if you are willing to pick a diesel engine - you will appreciate the 220d's effortless performance on the highway. However, if you need a petrol, the Audi Q3's turbo petrol is far superior to what Mercedes and BMW offer, hence it gets our vote.
